I’ve been watching Ryder Cups since the early 80s and I would say Sam would be one of my favourite Ryder Cup players. His emotions, his play and his sportsmanship show just what it meant to him. A Scottish gentleman...

I can't remember the year ,but the Open came back to St Andrews . It was on the Tuesday and the players were practicing and milling around taking it all in . There was a young boy about 8 there with his dad and he was wearing a Celtic top . I remember vividly Sam Torrance , stopping and saying to the boy 'Oh I like your strip kid that's fantastic 'and signed his autograph and shaking the little lad 's hand . He and his father were over the moon . Everyone also just admired the decency of Big Sam and enjoyed the moment too . I guess that Sam being a huge Celtic man helped a lot too ....magical memories .

My abiding memory of Sam Torrance is as a 14 year old following his group around the Scottish Open at Gleneagles. At the 18th as he walked off he was surrounded by young lads wanting his autograph (Scottish Golfer, Scottish Open, Scottish kids) his reponse was to say "F*cks sake" as he pushed past, granted he didn't play well when I followed him round that day but it always stuck with me that without young kids / fans coming through and being inspired by people like Sam then the game is nothing. Conversely Tom Kite who was also playing (possibly in the same group) was an absolute gentleman and spent loads of time speaking to golf fans, signing stuff etc....

@Paul Little One of the great players in the history of the European Tour. 21 wins, the stats don't lie. And a real Ryder Cup stalwart. He is a little overlooked in European golf, I think.

The long friendship between Sam Torrance and Curtis Strange really set the stage for a memorable Ryder Cup. The Euro guys were great and the closing ceremony was sportsmanship at it’s best. Sam might just be the coolest guy in golf.

Bloody love Sam Torrence and can listen to him forever its a mystery he isn't on commentary more. As a teenager in the 80's my club pro and coach told me I could be as good as Sam. He was very wrong sadly! :-D

Seve and some other players refused to play in 81 because they didn't feel they were getting fair treatment from the Euro Tour and Europe got hammered. Seve returned in 83 which was the beginning of the modern era of Ryder Cups
