My daughter couldn’t talk like a neurotypical child until she was 4 due to global developmental delays. She’s now 13 and had a solo in her chorus concert singing this song. This song touched me deeply. All my life I have been humiliated from being over weight, walking with limp (dislocated hip) not being pretty enough. I've been abused, molested, laughed at and just disrespected. From strangers, family and even supposed friends. It took me years to build some self esteem and self worth. Im now 50+ years old and finally found my true voice. I won't be disrespected nor will I allow myself to be used. I still fall back now and then but I always find my strength. Wow this actually almost brought me to tears, im 13 going 14 next week and i have been through all of that too. The thing I love most about this song that how it doesn't just soothe, it _energizes._ Many songs on the same emotion soothe you, they tell you it's okay to be different. But this song....she's not just saying "don't let their words get to you", the lyric is specifically "gonna send a flood, gonna drown 'em out." It's not about "I am bruised", but also "this is who I'm meant to be", as if you actively worked to survive that damage. There's an element of activity in the words; the song energizes you into wanting to pushback on the dismissive or degrading comments and treatment, makes you want to demand the dignity you deserve as a person living in the world. You're not wrong just for being different, and you deserve to stand up for yourself and your right to love yourself just as you are. Without fail, this song doesn't just make me feel better, it makes feel _capable,_ and that's exactly the magic those who resonate with this song need.

This song always bring a tear to my eyes, since I was bullied for a solid 12 years. Just for being different, since I was autistic and never followed the crowd. I was held against walls being choked, punched, kicked, beaten, put in choke holds on the floor which nearly knocked me out and the worst part was being stabbed, all this happened in school. In my old job I was also bullied and discriminated against. Then in 2019 i was diagnosed with having a brain tumour and cyst in the temporal lobes of my brain and diagnosed with epilepsy. I had the tumour and cyst removed in 2020 and thankfully they were not cancerous. I now have to have a yearly MRI for 10 years to make sure that the tumour doesn’t come back and I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Now I’m due to graduate university in July with a masters degree in computer security and networks and I have also started my dream job as an IT Engineer

Hi. I’m autistic too :). I have never been physically bullied like you were. I have been emotionally and mentally bullied though. One girl tried to turn my only two friends in a new school against me right before one of which who was my BFF was going to move away. There’s a girl who I knew since kindergarten and she’s lived in my grandparents neighborhood since we were little and I would see her all the time. In third grade a new kid came to my school. Said new kid manipulated her into bully me. She was always kinda mean and bratty but she was nice to me and we would go trick or treating every year with our little siblings together. But once that new kid came that changed. As I already said she bullied me a bit. She stole my favorite jacket. Now quick side note but that jacket was my most treasured possession. It has stopped being made and I’ve never seen one like it ever again. She not only stole it but she wore it in front of me. Lied straight to my face about it and lost it. She gave it away for a whole year! My mom had to go to hers to get it back. When I did get it back it was stained and ripped. Sorry I’m not trying to make my experiences seem worse than yours at all. Yours are worse and you don’t deserve any of it. But I might be seeing the girl who stole my jacket again soon and I need to vent about it. I hope your doing well

You're not alone. I was never really physically bullied. I got shoved numerous times but that was it. Nothing was ever done about it until I told the vice principal of my school. I think they didn't physically bully me because I was pretty much the tallest person in my year group. If I did physically hurt them, they'd know about it. I used to lash out at my family physically, years ago. It went on for a while. I could not stop it once it started. Long story short, I managed to make it stop and I'm like the most patient person in the world unless I'm already in a mood.

Autism is a developmental condition or state of being. Not a mental illness. That being said, autistic people can have other disabilities, conditions or illnesses comorbid with autism that can make them unhealthy or chronically ill. Just think it's important to make that distinction. So many people think that all autistic people are suffering, when in fact, most of us are quite content and happy to be who we are. We see the world in such a deep, beautiful way. I actually feel bad for those who don't see it this way. Autism is a beautiful state of being and I wake up thankful every day I was created this way. So glad you and your friend both found someone to accept each other unconditionally.

This song always makes me feel good about myself! I have been through a lot this year. Lost my grandfather in January and now I'm dealing with an obsessive ex-boyfriend who had friends that were threatening to end my life. I frequently questioned who I was and what my purpose on Earth was. But when I hear this song, I feel empowered as a person and have learned to embrace my flaws and love them. I have learned to accept that my scars were put in me for a reason cause our scars are what make us unique. Like Keala sings in the song, "This is brave. This is bruised. This is who I'm meant to be. I’ve been dealing with a horrible toxic friendship, all the kids in my class pick on me and don’t call me by my transgender name (Nathaniel). Almost everyone in my school is transphobic, my toxic friend hates my LGBTQ+ oc group, she stole most of them and called me difficult. She encouraged me to commit self-harm and didn’t care. One night I began cutting my arm with scissors, with my arm covered in blood, I began to sob. This was her fault, she did this to me. I began wearing binder related items and begged to get my hair cut short, I became a handsome trans man in January and I’m still working on it, my friends have been telling me ”she just wants to be your friend, but you're not letting her”. I finally replied calmly ”If she can’t call me Nathaniel and appreciate my sexuality and who I identify as, even encouraging me to commit self-harm, I will not let her take my stuff and say ”I’m trying to be your friend” because she is not”. Sorry for wasting your time! Love is love!

You did not waste my time, Nathaniel. I may not be trans, but I have chosen to go by a different name (Orion) than my legal one (John). I have people who won't respect that, and I have people, like my best friend, who try. I am gay and was raised by Jehovah's Witnesses. My oldest brother won't even acknowledge my existence. My mom won't accept or respect my boyfriend (I am single at the moment, but she told me this.). I have friends who have said that I should have never come out of the closet. I have friends try to come into my life and change me back. I've told these people that if they can't accept me for who I am than they don't deserve to be in my life.

I'm a girl trans and don't always identify as what people expect me to ( cuz I switch between genders because on some days I feel like a girl on others a boy) and I used to have this one friend that told me that if I wasn't a girl I should just die, so one day I sat on my roof and was about to, you know......jump when I remembered my gecko. yes my gecko is what stoped me. I remembered I lived alone and if I died no one would feed him. I know its strange but we all have are ways and small thing that stop us.
