Secretariat and Zenyatta often did come from behind like True Brew did in this race. I love that style of racing but it often is unsuccessful because of traffic troubles. I always thought the Aussies liked Phar Lap and Black Caviar the best.Secretariat was the sire of their Melbourne Cup winner who still holds the fastest time for that race.

Just watched a doco about secretariat and wow omg what a horse, I don’t think it’s fair to compare champions and single out 1 only, there’s different eras and track conditions etc, lets talk about horses like Kingston town, Pharlap, Makybe diva- 3 Melbourne cups, Black caviar, Wynx undefeated in 29 starts so far and won an unequalled 4 Cox plates, Bernborough, Tulloch, the list goes on, Archer who in 1861 and 62 was walked 1000 kilometres to enter and arrived the day before and won it twice, the list and the stories go on all throughout history, I love horses and love a champion and I don’t like to compare anyone as the greatest ever.

Secretariat, like Seabiscuit, was a "dud stud" who did not "stamp his get", i. e. pass along his traits, so he was the last of his line. Runty little Northern Dancer was a phenomenal stud who sired nothing but champions who begat champions. This should be taken into account along with sheer speed and # of races won.

+rainbow vision Please realise that the award off Champion is very artificial and cannot be planned or bred. Lets say you have a race of 20 top class horses, one will always win, but between the winner and the losers might be just a meaningless 2 seconds, or you can water the track, and run the race again and another horse wins, in practice, you need to breed 10 000 foals to get a champion horse, so much for breeders knowledge, stud books and pedigrees, its all nonsense. Champions are flukes.

In my opinion, jockeys win races or lose them. There are so many subtle things a rider can affect horse's stride, pace, balance, etc. Special horses like Secretariat really don't count in the bread and butter races. Per diams are high so everybody needs to be paid. Correct conformation, trainability and disposition really matter in the long run. Those traits affect the future winners and keep the sport going.

Everyone's mentioning the great US and Aussie horses, what about the great European horses Frankel, Seabird, Shergar et al. I think the best sire was Arc Winner Sadlers Wells, his progeny were prolific winners. My personal favourite was Shergar.

Sadler's Wells was the greatest sire of his generation, and one of the great sires in history. But his sire Northern Dancer is arguably THE greatest sire in TB history, and certainly of modern times. Sadler's Wells was the more prolific, and earned more leading stallion titles (in a smaller market). But for sheer quality of get, Northern Dancer is without peer. And he should get some of the credit for Sadler's Wells quality as a stallion.... Compare their stats, keeping in mind that Northern Dancer stood stud in an era when top stallions covered about 40 mares a year: Northern Dancer: 645 named foals 411 winners (63.7%) stakes winners: 147 (22.8%) Sadler's Wells: 2259 named foals 1224 winners (54.2%) stakes winners: 294 (13%) Elite stallions typically sire 10%-15% stakes winners. Sadler's Wells is clearly in that group. Northern Dancer's 22.8% is extraordinary, and unmatched. The Northern Dancer - Sadler's Wells - Galileo line is probably the single strongest stallion line of the current day. It would be cool if Frankel continues it.

Racing followers need The Horse of the Decade title, meaning the best horse in 10 years, so in a century you would have just 10 winners, Man O War, War Admiral, Secretariat, Phar Lap would figure. Once an horse retires the chances he will make a good stud are 1000-1, and mark my words racing form is no indicator of future stud success. Each year (potential) Stud horses are destroyed because they never won a race, they have the genes, the pedigrees, and the conformation, but are ignored by breeders, No Wins-No Mares is the rule.

Pipers Son No need, really, since Horse of the Year has long been awarded in various countries. There are problems with your idea/list, btw. First: do you mean the U.S., or worldwide? Phar Lap is ineligible for the U.S., he never made a start in the U.S. If you mean worldwide, do you put a 3-year-old Man o'War (1920) over a 3-year-old Phar Lap (1929)? Do you put Phar Lap at 4 year old + (1930-1932) over the full of War Admiral's career (1936-1939)? For the 1930's, Italy's undefeated Nearco might have a better claim than either.

They ran 1000 Meters, 1 kilometer, less than a mile, it's a Bloody SPRINT. This makes him Great? I weep. You may wan to do some research on racing history. Find out who "The Mighty Atom" was, or Citation or, why Secretariat WAS such a Machine, who St. Simon and Phalaris were. These horses ran 40+ races of 3200+ meters, hitting the board 75% of the time. Then they went on to produce grade 1 stakes winners. Their influence still dominantes modern racing, That is what makes a Great race horse.

@mac Secretariat set 5 stakes records, 5 track records, 2 world/dirt surface records. You didn't specify the breakdown on Man o'War's records, so maybe Secretariat actually set more, though I seriously doubt that, you presumably meant records in 8 different races. Swaps set/equaled six WORLD records (which I am pretty sure is more than even Man o'War, maybe as many as MoW and Secretariat put together. But there are a number of horses, Man o'War and Secretariat only two of them, whom I (and most people) rank over Swaps. And Ruffian set 8 stakes records and 2 track records, in just 8 stakes outings. Though I personally discount her as in running for GOT; her 2 track records (or 3, she equaled her own record) were both at the sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs. John anthony said Secretariat was setting TRACK records, not world records, so he was not claiming no horses have ever run those distances faster than Secretariat did. Most of Man o'War's records have been broken, too, after all. And those that haven't been broken will remain unbroken for the same reason Secretariat's Belmont Stakes record/world dirt record is unlikely to be broken: there's little to no chance for it to happen. The Belmont, unfortunately, remains the only 12 furlong dirt race in the U.S., and it's run by three-year-olds in the spring. Older horses would have a better shot at breaking it.

@@johnanthony6664 Timers DO lie. Both human timers and the electric timers used at tracks. There was a controversy about the time the great gelding Game On Dude ran the 2013 Pacific Classic. Independent timers from Trakus Time had it at 1:59.26, Del Mar's official time (which was upheld) was 2:00.69. Discrepancies like that and of Secretariat's Preakness time may be fairly common, they just don't get challenged unless a stakes record is on the line. (Which was not the case with Game On Dude's Pacific Classic.) What does NOT lie is videotape, which is computerized and invariable. It was videotape analysis which definitely proved Secretariat had run in track record time.

Seattle Slew was the greatest. He was faster than Secretariat and could close in 23/24 last quarter like Secretariat and could carry weight 130 lbs., which Secretariat never did. Do I think he could have... yes, but we'll never know. For a mile to a mile 1/8 definitely the 'Slew", 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 maybe Secretariat.

@mac If by wondering about Chenery's 20/20 hindsight, you're alluding to the decision to retire Secretariat at age 3 -- if I remember correctly, she would have liked to have run him at 4. In any case, she had no choice. Her father Christopher died in January 1973, between Secretariat's 2- and 3-year-old seasons, leaving her with millions of dollars of estate taxes to pay on Meadow Stable. To pay the taxes, she had to sell off a lot of bloodstock, including syndicating Secretariat for a then record amount before he made a start at 3. She also syndicated Riva Ridge. (If her father had died much earlier, or if Riva Ridge had not been a champion 2-y-old and a successful three-year-old, she would have had to sell Secretariat outright and earlier, losing control of his racing career. Riva Ridge, far more than Secretariat, saved Meadow Stable, and Riva always remained her favorite.) The terms of the syndication dictated Secretariat be retired at the end of his 3-yr-old season. Chenery retained decision making on the remainder of his racing schedule. There was a lot of anxiety on her part, and that of the syndicate I dare say, regarding if the colt would live up to the hype of his Horse of the Year two-year-old campaign and the high price tag attached to him.

If Sham was injured during the Belmont, it was not apparent at the time. He remained in active training and was not retired until July, after pulling up lame from a workout. No one works a horse they know has broken down. Could Sham have incurred some minor injury during the Belmont that was subsequently exacerbated? It is possible. But he didn't come out of the Belmont lame, much less "break down," which generally refers to an injury so severe that a race or workout cannot be completed, or maybe if the horse turns up severely lame immediately after running.
