Love the 4960 content. It has always been my favorite tractor since the early 90s and I remember when they were on Deere lots new. Picked up our 4960 in 2020 and it was worth the wait.

I never had a 4960, but at one point we were running a 4440, a 4450, and a 4955. Oh yeah, and the old reliable 4020. The sound guard tractors had to be the most reliable, bullet proof machines I've ever owned. That 466 engine didn't know the meaning of "quit".

I bought my 4960 at a farm auction for 24k. It had 800 hours on a fresh overhaul. I had to put a new steering motor in it, a new circuit board , and fix a few gremlins in the lights. I then converted to all LED lights. My hands all love this tractor. Only gripe I have is it’s loud as s$&t in the cab.

I see that working tractor restoration is becoming a regular business. Tractor restoration used to just be about antique machines for show. It's easy to see why there's a grow business in restoring working tractors.

My dad complained about new tech when we upgraded to the JD4440 from the IH966. I think that was 1978 or so and it was the first 100+hp tractor we owned - and air conditioning to boot. Equipment is much better now but we could work on all our machines back in the 70s, we had to, there was no money to send it to town.

The simple build and power of these machines is amazing. Funny the difference between Idaho sand farming and southern clay farming. We only had a couple of fields we ever plowed. Mainly just cultivated soil was all that was needed.

My Son went to an annual auction in the upstate about 6 years ago and there was an almost NEW unverfurth Perfector selling dirt cheap.....He bought it, used it some and eventually sold it after we had planted all our open land in Bermuda Grass for the commercial hay business......We have a 4255 that has a digital dash that stopped working I Fabricated a 2 guage form fitted illuminated cluster for Oil pressure and Engine Temp that mounts to front cab wall over Dash.....

You got the 2 most important gauges! With peanut harvest we have to know the RPM. If the number changes by 10 in either direction it is drastic changes in the picking.

I preach on this often. John Deere’s with a letter in their name (8R360 or 8285R for example) have constant sensor issues. Rarely, if ever, mechanical problems (except for Regin burning up engines). $9 sensors (that JD sales for $98) frequently disable those tractors.

Patrick, you ever hear of or run into any “right-to-repair’ issues with newer equipment? Like having to wait on a service tech to come and unlock access to software and run diagnostics for sensors that you or a third party should be able to repair and maintain yourself? These newer complex machines, for better or worse I hear are pretty much under the grip of JD in that regard, and they are cold toward legislation that could give farmers more power to control equipment down times and expenses by fixing something themselves. Any vague and generalized thoughts...lol?

@@jamesh.5709 john deere was successfully sued by farmers over right to repair just over a year ago. Even before the suit was litigated there was already a company out of Arkansas that would build/sell you a JD tech laptop so you could “work” on the tractor. MOST of the repairs on newer tractors is just keystrokes on a laptop and then tractor starts back working correctly. Looks awful lot like a racket.

According to tractor data, at full throtle the 4960 gets 18 HP Hours/Gallon. That is the same as the record setting 1957 John Deere 2 Cylinder model 730. Most big HP tractors are fuel eaters.

Yeah those 466 were a forgiving engine. The newer engines can do slightly better one efficiency but it cost loads of money and extra components. I never ran 60 series daily. Spent lots of time in 8000, 10s 30 and the 8R.

@@PatrickShivers the 8010 series were very similar but more polished. They shifted much smother. The 8030 series had a much wider torque band than the first serial break 8000 R. 2009-2010 were doggie. The 14-17 270-295 seem ok. The current 8r ride substantially better with cab suspension i plant soybeans with an 8R310.

@@derekmartin2817 we’ve done multiple engine replacements at our shop (I think 2 on this channel) on 8295R and 8360R. The John Deere dealer replaced that same 8360R engine for us twice. Regin is burning them up.

At my work, a 7810 has been my second home for many years. 740 loader goes on in the fall and comes off in the spring. I've planted, mowed, and bush hogged untold thousands of acres and hours in it. Handles hills and slopes, even with a 15' discbine or 20' bush hog like it's glued to the ground. If you find one GET IT!

@@PatrickShivers I can tell you this much: the 7810 doesn't get pushed as much by a JD 450 discbine when turning around on slopes as a 6150R does, and is about even with a 6215R. But my tuckus tells me the 7810 is sticking tighter to the ground than either of the newer ones. When you get on hills and slopes, you have to trust your feel in the seat.

@@PatrickShivers Lancashire UK , near Southport very fertile ground prob best in UK apart from the glacial clay in a seam that runs parallel to the coastline where the glaciers met the sea 10000 ye@s ago .. one side is peat moss then boulder clay then black sand (mix of sand and peat moss ) I farm PYO pumpkins50k( 20 acres ) sunflowers for cut flowers and summer flower crops main tractor 35x Massey Ferguson ..1964 🤣 and couple MF265s all my mates have John Deeres the new fly by wire ones .. I’m old skool but still turn out the goods 🤣👊

I like your reason for the 4960 but it my option the 8400-8410 would be a better option for me. Just because I could do everything that the 4960 does but I have green star and a heavier built back in a little heavier in the front as well and look just as good.

It ain’t easy to get in if you aren’t born into it….but it is possible. I’ve seen it done. You will likely have to do custom work to get started.

The sound guards with the 466s were awesome, but hard to beat the original 8.1s in the 8000 and 8010s. Lugged better and more lead in the tractor frame in general. See alot of 8.1s that go 12 to 15k hours without being touched. The 466s seemed a little maxed out by the time they wrre cranking 200 horses.

@@PatrickShivers That’s funny, I rented an 8400 from the dealer one time when my main tractor went down. It was one of the early model 8400s and I hated it. It felt light weight, the seat felt like a pogo stick, and the shifting would throw you out of the front or back windows practically while shifting up or down in certain gears. I absolutely hated it 😂. They were the new tractors at the time and that cured me of wanting a new tractor until the R series came out. I think the R series tractors are hands down the most productive tractors in the field today in terms of sheer productivity. For simple cheap horsepower, easy to work on you can’t beat the Sound Guard cab Deeres.

@@PatrickShivers our current roster has a 8420, 8430, and a early (2009) 8295R, which is nothing but a leftover 8330. They are all good machines, and serviceable. But the 2013 8285R and the 2015 8320R, are just a bundle of high tech wizardry that I, nor my two sons can decipher. If it's anything more than a belt or a water pump or changing oil and filters, we have to rely on Blanchard Equipment. We've dug our own grave with technology, I'm afraid.

Here in Ireland if your going for the older classics... as jd 7810 or Fendt 824 are classed Kings of the hill but locally here in my area in Derry where livestock farms are the main thing. A Fiat 110 90 are widely considered the pick of the classics but not every man will agree 😂

They were traded under the Hesston brand in North America. Fait was Europe's best selling brand at a time before they bought ford and became Newholland.

Georgia, the state where I live/farm, was originally established as an Irish debtor colony by the crown. King George imprisoned Irishmen that owed taxes to the crown and sent them over here, to a colony named after himself, to work off their debt. There is still a lot of Irish and Scott blood living here today.

We have owned a pair of 3020 PS, 4630 PS and an 8960 with 30.5r32 duals but all the yellow wheels are gone now. North Central Pa definitely has no nice JD dealers to deal with ....

Yes, had a 9170 Steiger after the 8960 . Changed operations and sold 700 milk cows and now have some beef and grain farm. Sold Steiger and 4 Magnums last spring, now have 5 Magnums

My dad has an open station 4430 (that is in several of my videos) that grandpa bought new. I have stated over and over on this channel that it is one of the top 5 all time tractors. I love Deere from that era
