The greatest underdog story in Europe: Stade Brestois Documentary

Stade Brestois 29 was never meant to qualify for the Champions League, but they did. The club that is typically a favourite for relegation has been able to make history with their best campaign since their creation in 1950. Despite having one of the smallest budgets in Ligue 1, Stade Brestois 29 has pulled off the greatest underdog story in Europe for the 2023-24 season by qualifying for UEFA’s elite club competition.
Given their unlikely success, Stade Brestois' head coach, Eric Roy, was given the Ligue 1 Coach of the Year Award. Both Eric Roy and striker Steve Mounié are interviewed in this video, as well as Grégory Lorenzi, the player-turned-sporting director who has helped build Stade Brestois 29 into the club it is today through savvy signings and limited funds. In this Stade Brestois 29 documentary from Rabona TV, we’ll look at how the club has evolved, against all odds.

Steve Mounié was one of only a handful of signings made by Huddersfield in the Premier League who wasn't a complete mercenary. Seeing his success with Stade Brestois has been a rare source of happiness for us Terriers as we've continued to struggle with our post-Premier League hangover. There's a song that was made by a local group, La Lucha Libre, called Red and White. Some of the lyrics read "Brest flies high. Phoenix don't die" That sums up the Brest story. This season has been nothing short of incredible for us, but the bigger journey has been too. We went from the heydays of the 80s, when we were the best team in Brittany and even had the mad story of our president in a legal stand off against the Colombian drug cartel to get a players, to the downfall and return to depths of amateur football in the 90s, to the return to professionalism in the mid 2000s. This is also an unbelievable story. I remember, back in 2013, when the ultras were chanting that our club was now dying as we were in vegetation. To go from all of that, to Champions League football, it feels so surreal. I was on the verge of tears throughout the final weeks. Broken leg be damned, I jumped up and down for my team this year. Last year (season 22/23) I was in Strasbourg with my father, managed to get us tickets for Strasbourg - Brest it was quite a competitive game I remember Lees-Melou was quite good that day, Brest won 1-0 away, they were s better for most of the game, very good atmosphere on stadium. But never did I think I was watching soon to be CL team 😅

Lots of crazy moments in football: 1.Brest and Girona played the European Football for the first time (Champions League). 2.Stuttgart returned to the Champions League after around 10 years. 3.Bologna returned to the Champions League after around 60 years. 4.Aston Villa returned to the Champions League after around 40 years. 5.Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title, ending Bayern Munich's dominance. 6.Sturm Graz won the Austrian Bundesliga title, ending RB Salzburg's dominance. 7.First major European trophies for Atalanta and Olympiacos. 8.Ivory Coast won the AFCON at home soil, having narrowly avoided tournament's exit and had a caretaker manager midway through the tournament. 9.Jordan played in the Asian Cup Final and would have won the entire thing without Qatar's corruption. 10.Al Ain won the AFC Champions League after 21 years, having previously edged two big Saudi clubs Al Nassr and Al Hilal. Waiitng for these: 1.Borussia Dortmund to win 2nd Champions League title, inflicting Real Madrid's first final defeat over 40 years. 2.England to win their first major trophy after 58 years.

Amazing story, but I'd say Olympiacos winning the conference league is an even BIGGER underdog story. Not only is it the first time ever a Greek team won a European trophy, the first time in a decade any team outside the top 4 leagues won anything in Europe, but also the only time this millennium a team outside of the top 20 leagues (Greece was ranked 21st at the beginning of the season) won a cup - monumental achievement, especially given that nobody gave them any chance and they took out 3 of the top 5 favourites since the Quarterfinals! (Fenerbahçe, Aston Villa AND Fiorentina) It's almost as much of a miracle as Greece winning the Euros 20 years ago...

Great achievement yes, but Olympiakos budget is 107M€ , more than twice Brest's budget. Olympiakos remains one of the richest clubs out of the top 4 leagues. It would be 5th budget in France, the 5th league. Besides, ECL isn't really a trophy, it's the under-underdogs Cup, created recently and nobody cares about it except the cities involved. Sorry but a "farmers club" struggling year after year to stay in French 1st division, getting a direct ticket to CL is a better story.

Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Zenit St Petersburg, Sporting, Benfica, FC Porto, Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV all have over 200 million, about double Olympiacos's transfermarkt value. And, in my view, winning a European cup, any European Cup, is a far bigger achievement than getting 3rd place in Ligue 1. Not trying to belittle Brest's achievement - it's amazing, about as amazing as Saarbrucken reaching the DFB pokal semis, but not bigger. And if it was that easy to win conference league, why did Roma and West Ham, only top 4 leagues teams, win the first 2 editions? Again, Brest is probably the most amazing domestic league miracle story this season, but I think you are severly downplaying Olympiacos's miracle win in Europe...

I was depressed when the weekend recap ended; however, a promise came with higher quality videos and documentaries. I love to see how far Adrian has gone. Although I miss Paco and plantini (rip), I love to see the evolution of this channel. Brest reminds my of boy-hood club, Leicester City. As an individual who is in their early 20s, I never seen my team play in the top-flight. When they did, all I wanted was survival from relegation. After surviving the first season, I was scared of second season syndrome. But out of no where, they won the league. Never in my life would I have ever imagined my small club, will win the premier league and watch them in the champions league. I hate how football has become a monopoly. Only the rich teams win, but that’s the harsh reality of life. I hope more underdog stories continue in the future.
