it's based off folklore from the U.K. called "The Green Man". they used imagery and objects relating to it throughout the film such as the statue with the woman and the face along with the pale man sticking leaves in his face. how closely it is to the folklore I'm not sure, but I'd say it's an interesting villain and one of my favorites this era of horror
