I grew up Roman Catholic, read the bible growing up many times in school etc. I lost my faith in highschool, in my 30's and whenever I watch this movie it always brings that faith i guess back and makes me question myself and everything. I really don't know what's on the other side but i do know we as humans really do need to be nicer to each other. Beautiful movie and wonderful reaction as always.

I learned Wushu. There is nothing, man. "Spirit" doesn't exist without body, it needs it. After you lose the body "you" degrade down to the basic instincts until you vanish all (start of that process was felt by some unfortunate students who break off form obdy for short period until master helped to get back). Hi Kali, A word how that electric chair works regarding the sponge: Water is highly conductive, so if you soake it in water and place it (like in the movie) on a shaved space and press down on it, the electricity will go through the sponge and everything wett under it. So yes then your brain gets fried really fast. However if you do not soake the sponge, the electricity does not have anywhere to go but your full body, and i can tell you that hurts really bad. Ive got electrocuted once due to faulty wires in the house. I was literally thrown a few meters back. When i woke up i heard my phone go off. It was my mam and i told her to call an ambulance. But later that day i could go home. In our homes in The Netherlands it is 220 to 230 volts. Imagine 2500 volts hitting you, it was like that in those times. So in those times NO soaked sponge, would mean unimaginable pain. I guess in the movie you played that catching on fire is true. And more cruell things happen to the body wich i will not tell here.😔

Every actor in this movie is perfectly cast and it remains one of my favourites of all time. Everyone gives Michael Clarke Duncan (well deserved) praise, but I personally love a lot of the subtleties in Tom's performance. The way he delivers "May God have mercy on your soul" to John Coffey in such a way that you know he is praying for his own absolution is so powerful. Your empathy and understanding of beautifully written characters and story has made you a must watch so I'm to Patreon to subscribe and cry along with you in full ❤

I'm assuming you haven't watched very many Green Mile reaction videos or, at least, haven't read many comments under said videos. The Green Mile is pretty on the nose with its parallels to the story of Jesus Christ and even if reactors don't mention it, half a dozen comments under every single video do.

One of the things I've really loved about your reactions lately is that you're going into these movies totally blind. As in like not even reading the little summaries that streaming services put up, and not watching trailers or looking up actor lists. Since even the most basic synopsis of this movie spoils that there's something magical about John. And getting to see you experience all of that in the moment with no expectations about what's going to happen is very cool Percy joins Umbridge from HP, and Heimdall from GoW as some of my most deeply hated characters in media 🤣 And that's not a bad thing either. It just speaks to how well written and acted a character is to instill such strong emotions. It's all part of the experience It's really cool to see so many of the same actors in this era flock around with Tom Hanks in these movies! Lt. Dan, and the sniper from Saving Private Ryan, among others

I have to say with this one- going in completely blind was a magical experience, literally lol. I was NOT expecting any sort of miracles/magic/heavenly themes in this at all. all I knew was that there was an electric chair bc RDR2 fans told me lol. but it was so much more than that... I think from now on i'll keep doing it this way! and I 10000% agree that Percy is up there with Heimdall level hatred lol. what an incredible actor to get such strong and hateful feelings out of me! 😮‍💨😭 honestly, every actor in this film had me feeling things just with their silent reactions and thoughtful scripts. an intense movie for sure... but one that is worth seeing at least once in your lifetime ✨

If Percy was to work at Briar Ridge, he would have tormented the patients like he did to the inmates. That would have been condemning the Briar Ridge patients to hell.

I've commented along these lines before, but a through-line from the book to the movie is that both Percy and Wild Bill are fundamentally broken; dyed-in-the-wool sociopaths. The difference is that Wild Bill grew up in poverty whereas Percy was the scion of a relatively wealthy, well-connected family. Wild Bill ends up facing execution for his depraved acts, but Percy is effectively untouchable despite committing acts that are equally depraved. John's last significant act is finding a way to have these poisonous men cancel one another out in the only way he can, given his circumstances. Had John not intervened, as you say, Percy would have continued to find ways to torture those over whom he had power - and it's unlikely anyone could have stopped him.

Hello Kali!😊 Yes, the rehearsals were part of the normal operation for death row to make sure things went smoothly for the actual execution. They used to allow anyone to witness the execution, but then most places changed it to the victims of the family and family of the accused. There was a big scandal back in the day of the electric chair. The guy that repaired the chairs in most prisons in the United States did not believe the Holocaust had happened. After it became known, he was let go. You are correct, the J.C. is not a coincidence. Stephen King also penned "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) which was also directed by the same director here Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead). It is another very strong film, but this is my favorite of the two films. Great emotional reactions to this difficult watch, Kali!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Most people assume that Coffey put the tumor in Percy, but I always interpreted it as the essence extracted from it, not the tumor per se. It was just a means to an end (“I punished them both”) at that point.

I remember when this book series came. It was released in 6 parts. I remember Stephen King did mention that JC was done on purpose. You are the first reactor to pick up on that. Also the ending seems so scary to me. Out living all your friends and loved ones.

I'm glad you got a chance to see this film. It's my favorite movie adaptation of a Stephen King novel. There are two tv series that he wrote as well that are remarkable. "The Stand" and "Storm of The Century". If you want to see Hanks in a comedy, you'll have to see his older material. There are films like "Money Pit", "The Man With One Red Shoe", and "Splash!"

What impacts me from this amazing film is how we all have within us the "Supernatural Gifts" of a *John Coffey.* Our "gifts" to aid others can change or even save their lives. Even saying "YES" or "NO" at the right time can "heal" a person in need. Great analysis on a great movie Kali.

Because you recently did Band of Brothers...i feel like when Doc Roe, who was from Louisana, where this is set, refers to his grandmother as a traiteurs or healer...it was a nod to this movie and John Coffey. Remember he says she laid her hands on people and took the pain away...he even mentions her healing cancer just like Coffey did with the Warden's wife.

Just as an FYI, the wet sponge is so that the current from the chair is spread more evenly throughout his body. If the sponge is dry the scalp and brain cook and you can smell it something horrible.

There have been cases where the sponge was accidentally left dry, it resulted in the body catching fire.

It's actually the opposite. Water is such a great conductor that it focuses more of the electricity into one spot, meaning it is concentrated on the head/brain ensuring death happens as fast as possible. Without it, that is what causes the current to try and find other avenues of conductivity. You will notice that the other inmates who were executed still had sever burns on the top of their head, but no place else.

Not true, they even say in the film itself, the water is to help direct the electricity into the brain and away from the body. The electricity will follow the flow of water as it absorbs into the scalp and will direct it all downwards into the brain to kill quicker.

Hi Kali, I also like movies based on true events. 1 of them that made my heart brake is the movie called An American Crime - 2007. It is about the horrible thing that happened to Sylvia Likens, in Indiana in the 60's. There is also reall footage of the events on the net and KZbin. Its really sad and i wished that if i was their i could have done something to safe her😔.

Hi Kali, I agree with your religion that you mentioned on the end. Like you said you can live in a hellish world or a heavenly world based on how you live or things you have done. I have the same believe but….there is always a but: "What if you are born in a world of War?" Like basically you are born in the Ukrain or in the past, born as a jew in 1940 in Europe. Then we change or switch it. Lets say your having Christmas, eating dinner with your loved ones and friends a true heavenly place to be and all is nice. But yet on that same on a other part of the world people are getting killed. I often think about this and it kind of disturbes me. Thinking this: The Earth is/Was Eden (not just a place on earth) for that diamond we got from the highest power, we miss use it. So heaven and hell are here on earth or eden.

Almighty algorithm. Bring Kaliwali her deserved views and subs! As for the movie it is of course awesome and even though I don't tear up easily watching movies, this one is full of those moments for me. Especially when the guards tear up at the execution. I also love the soundtrack, especially the main theme and at times it also puts me into a pensive mood when I listen to it sort of like the "Plastic Bag"-song from American Beauty, if you know that one, where I can just feel life as a whole all at once. It's hard to describe. It's probably the closest thing to a spiritual moment I can have as an atheist. I'd probably call it "mindfulness". Like life stripped away of all its bs and a clarity of what matters.

This is one of those movies that I can watch over and over again even if I've seen it 100 times already. It's definitely not the type of story I think about when I think of Stephen King but I love how it delves into the human element that still exists even in a place like death row. P.S. The movie reinforces my belief that the death penalty is unethical. This not a religious conviction, but an ethical one. If I alone end the life of someone that wasn't a dangerous threat to me or another person, that's illegal. If two people do likewise, that's illegal, as it would be if 6 people did. 12 people is an arbitrary number but some believe it's enough to trump ethics and make it right. Human life is too precious for 12 people to take it away. And then, aside from the punishment, there is the dilemma that courts can get decisions wrong. The death penalty should be abolished in every state, as it is in every country in Europe (except Belarus).

Percy is probably one of the most hated characters in all of film. I have to hand it to the actor, it takes real skill to make you hate someone that much. Also, part of the reason he doesn’t see the doctor about his UTI is that this is the time before penicillin. The only thing that could help would be sulfa drugs, but they’re not as effective and have worse side effects. Edit: turns out the first sulfa drug wasn’t available until about 1936. So there wasn’t really much of anything the doctor could have done for him.

I just wanna say thank you so very much for this reaction I've watched this movie many times and NEVER realized how heavily John coffe represents Jesus and as someone who feel away from the faith for a while and only the past few years truely started seeking Him more have never felt more joy and happiness to truely be alive so gotta say your reaction made me cry a little more then usual but truely from the bottom of my heart thank you for this 🥲😭💜✝️

Hmmmmmmmmm.....while we're on the subject of heaven and hell, Maybe you should watch Jacob's Ladder (1990) one day. It's a bit out of season as it's kind of a (psychological) Horror film, but when it comes to stories about the 'weight' a person carries through life, there's none more influential and impactful as that movie. It even helped inspire the Silent Hill games.

As far as John’s “abilities” think back to episode 6 of “Band of Brothers.” Remember when Doc Roe was talking about his grandmother? Remember how he referred to her? He called her a “Tratures.” She pulled sickness out of people. Also remember, they were from Louisiana as well. There are some “unusual circumstances” that are bases in that part of the country. I believe John was one of those healers. There is also the theory that his initials are J.C. Some debate whether he could have been a reemergence of Jesus Christ. You should read the book. As good as this movie is, the book is so much better!!
