What are greenhouse gases? In this video, the biologist Jubilut explain the main greenhouse gases, where they come from, and its effects on climate change.
The most released greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. More than half of the carbon dioxide produced by human activity has been released in the last 3 decades. CO2 is responsible for 66% of the increase in the greenhouse effect of our atmosphere.
The first fossil fuel that became the world's most important energy source was coal. Over time, other sources of energy became popular, such as oil, which is today the most used fossil fuel.
It is from petroleum that gasoline, diesel oil, kerosene and LPG are made, which are widely used in industry, transport, energy production, and these are the activities that emit the most CO2 into the atmosphere.
Another greenhouse gas is methane. In the last 35 years, the concentration of methane in the atmosphere has risen from 1630 ppb to approximately 1910 ppb in 2020.
Methane released by humans comes from the use of oil and natural gas, rice cultivation, burning biofuels, transportation, industry, and livestock farming.
Other gases that increase the greenhouse effect are nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, CFC and water vapour.
Almost all of the technological and industrial advancement of the last 200 years has been built on the unbridled exploitation of natural resources. We burned and still burn all the oil we can find, we use absurd amounts of fertilizers, and we have the biggest herds in history. This can cause serious consequences, such as climate change.
In the next episode of this webseries, you will know what are the main consequences of climate change, and how they already affecting us.
