It’s because of the pandemic. Everyone had lots of time to waist so they spent their extra time looking for new shows to watch.

@Angie H. you lost me on that money thing. How do people make money from being a Columbo fan? Plus I happen to be one of the young fans Rebecca is referring too. I think I should know how I got into the series. I had a lot of extra time on my hands because my school was closed. I was looking for a new show to watch and found Columbo.

I love the entire final scene-especially Columbo’s reaction when Wilson says he’s going to arrest Janice (“no, sergeant, no”), and the way Jarvis glares at Wilson when he starts reading his Miranda rights. They did use much of this episode’s music in later Season Two episodes, but Oliver Nelson wasn’t credited again.

I liked that the young detective played a part in helping Columbo solve the case & he thanks him. Episodes like this could have made the guy look foolish & adversarial but Columbo & him generally learn off each other & when he's wrong it's not to make him look bad & very logical why he believes the wife did it based off the evidence. Columbo just gently points him in the right direction

I like this episode a lot. Everyone was against Columbo the entire time but when he finally starts putting the entire picture together, that slam-dunk takedown of the Lunk on the boat, was pure & delicious savagery. Boom Shaka Laka!! I’m a big fan of the Sgt. Wilson character too.

I'm glad you mentioned the score. It's the first episode where i remember thinking "man, that score is really great" and the segment you played from it is the exact bit i thought it at.

i really wish the young modern sidekick detective idea would have become a revisited scheme every so often,,,it would have been a great additional boost to several episodes in the years to come

It would have been fun to see Sgt. Wilson on an average of once a season. A full-time sidekick would overdo it, but a slightly expanded recurrence than we actually got would have been well-received.

Why didn't the police realize the clothes of the kidnapper (they took pictures) were the same clothes that Tony was wearing when they found him murdered? I also felt Tony's wife's acting was a little overboard.

Sgt. Wilson only showed up in one other episode, “Now You See Him,” again as a bumbler who followed every false clue, but with his knowledge of gadgets (in this case, a newer style of typewriter) bringing Columbo to a breakthrough that our hero probably never would’ve figured out on his own. I liked the character, and wished they’d one more with him - obviously not every episode, but maybe one appearance per season would’ve been nice. It was fun in his second appearance, when Jack Cassidy condescendingly called him “Dr. Watson,” but Wilson also got to be there to confront Cassidy at the end over the typewriter business.

Oliver Nelson died shortly after he scored this episode of Columbo. He was only 43 years old. His heart gave out due to stress, which is ironic in someone who composed such chill music.

I had no idea that the score was by the great Oliver Nelson of Stolen Moments, Whisper Not, Along Came Betty etc etc. I've played the whole lot myself on tenor sax. Great reviews

I like "The Greenhouse Jungle" too, although my favorite score of the whole series is probably Patrick Williams' score for "Make Me a Perfect Murder." According to IMDb this was Jonathan Latimer's last filmed teleplay. Latimer, like story consultant Jackson Gillis, had written numerous episodes of Perry Mason. Also, the director, Boris Sagal, had directed Dean Hargroves' final Man from UNCLE episodes, "The Prince of Darkness Affair, Parts I and II," in which Bradford Dillman was the villain. I also don't have a problem with the side characters not being "likeable." Did you really want to see the widow framed for murder by her husband's killer, who was perfectly willing to kill her if she'd awaken while he was breaking into her bedroom?

I believe there is a plot hole in this episode as well. The problem is when Ray Milland's character kills his nephew after they staged a ransom delivery in front of the police who witnessed and took several photos of the exchange. The nephew pretended to be a phony kidnapper and protected his identity (he himself was supposed to be the kidnapping victim) by wearing a stocking over his head. What doesn't make sense is that Malland killed the nephew right after and so the nephew was wearing the same clothes he was when the police saw him (as the kidnapper) and took the photos. Yet, the police, including Columbo make no mention of that. They should have known what was going on the moment they discovered the body (known only to them as the kidnapping/murder victim) wearing the same clothes as the "kidnapper".

Best music IMO is from Prescription For Murder and Suitable For Framing (esp., in the latter, when Columbo is driving to Aunt Edna's house: rhythmic suspense!).

"You're the detective, don't ask me for your answers!" "It's for YOU Columbo!" "What the devil are you doin' here? But it's 3 o'clock in the morning Columbo!" Oh yeah one more thing: "For that matter I don't mind revealing that my nephew isn't worth a sack of peet moss. He's a wife-ridden weakling who I've despised for years. If it wasn't for the fact he's my only remaining relative I'd call up his captures and tell them that they're welcome to him!" Something like that lol.

The "It's for YOU Columbo!" bluster is the funniest moment in the whole series. At the same time, the disgust with which he holds Columbo´s cigar with the tips of two fingers, as if it were a turd, is pure gold!
