This game has an exquisite, original setting and a truly thought-provoking plot. Not to spoil, but the choice between the two endings is really something to struggle over. Each side has a legitimate reason to get what they desire... I don't think even the Souls games gave me this much of a moral dilemma.

For those wondering about the game since the final DLC released not too long ago here’s what isn’t covered by the video: -ability to run has been added and is an optional boss drop -the game isn’t afraid to hide content from you. -ability to fast travel between checkpoints is a boss drop now. -4 entire new areas -resonance is a stat that powers up conditional traits you can level - new game plus completely changes the dynamic of every fight with new moves and mechanics - NG+1 introduces a secret superboss if you’ve fulfilled some conditions. - Estus Flasks are hidden collectibles that come in parts and are well hidden. - Newest/final DLC drop added a fun little platforming challenge

The "I'm so sorry that you have to have a body" song comes to mind. Wouldn't it be great if a consciousness could exist without a decaying body that will inevitably fail you one day? On another, a new meat-like game just dropped: "Golden Light". I'd love to see your take on it.

Ahh Grime, when the game came out I intensively played through it, not just once but 3 times over each time with different builds (One basic one, one using dexterity based weapons and one being solely based on parries and reflects). I personally really enjoyed the overall world it set out to create, a bizzare and fascinating place that somehow really captivated me. Also never found the platforming too bothersome, after a bit of practice it just clicked and even with its heavier and more methodical type of platforming I swooped around pretty quickly through the areas. And then there's just the dedication of the dev team to strive for improving it. Like adding almost double the amount of Nervepasses throughout the world what lead to a pretty smooth fast travel system. Armors giving stat boosts was also a thing added later on with an update and so was a respec option for your stats, and obviously just technical improvements. I remember finding a good amount of bugs and inconsistencies that have since been fixed. And now they're working on an actual content update that will add more bosses and new areas to the world what I'm incredibly curios about and see how they'll play into the overarching plot. So yeah, Grime certainly grew on me and I'm always happy to see it getting some recognition.

I played this game during the indie festival some time back, I was really enjoying it there, the demo had just the first area up till the first boss. I bought it on release since it had already proven its worth, but when I started playing and got further in I ended up dropping the game. I thought it became too frustrating, along some of the points you give in the video. It is a good observation that more movement options and the like would've made the game more sufferable early on, it is one of my fondest memories of Hollow Knight, getting the Mantis claw and double jump relatively early. Great video.

Thanks for this review! It actually got a shout out from the devs on Steam, which was cool. I just finished the game and was curious what other people thought about the story and themes. The stone people creating art to cope with their existential dread made a strong impact on me, as did poor Shidra who I really tried not to kill. (I couldn't accept the Weakness end though, I had to see what the boss fight was like...) It's funny that in most games, Shidra would be the good guy, even protecting a flawed and self-destructing world. It reminded me of Dark Souls 3's Ashes of Ariandel DLC, actually. Whether it's better to let something stagnate and rot away, or burn it all down and hope that what's left is something better. I like how Grime lets you hear from people on both sides, even if the protagonist is inherently set to consume it all.

This review of yours was interesting. I heard how bored you were in the beginning describing the gameplay, but then I heard the excitement and spirit in your voice once you started talking about the story of this game. It's interesting to hear your actual emotions go into the positives and negatives of each part of the game. It's almost like the unreliable narrator aspect of KZbin videos where people showing of games with their own emotional perspective that KZbin excels at. I kind of like it. I wonder if continuing that or maybe increasing that shown in your videos would be better.

This possesses my thoughts for the most part. The fights, bosses, the lore, platforming, the levelup all awesome. But Grime's jankiness damages its value to me. Ambient noises having a sudden popping in as you cross an invisible line defining biomes. Weapons in your hand visually disappearing when you talk to NPCs. Awkward teleports when entering animations. It breaks the atmosphere that everything else tries to create. EDIT: I play on PC

It seems to most closely mirror Order of Ecclesia, but without some of the better lessons on movement that Castlevania games have worked out since the 90's. I don't know if wedging Dark Souls combat into OoE would have made the magic/stamina system with glyph gathering any better.

Excellent game review and metaphysical reflexion in background. Indeed we are creating metaphores of our essential existential questions more and more fascinating, to compensate the lack of clear answers. The quest worth it equally I suppose in the hollows Cavern we belong to. Souls Games genra is mostly bringing this metaphores to artistic intellectual excellence. Gamer or not.

When did 15 hours became ''short''? I mean its pretty long honestly, a lot of content, not a lot of fluff, especially for an indie thing, got as much content as Symphony. This isn't a shot at you at all, its just, weird how sometimes i'll see people complaining a thing is short and like, to me, 10 hours is plenty long already. This game doesn't fully pass my ''ADHD'' test tho', which is ''do i remember what in the name of heck i was doing when i stop playing it for a month and does the game account for that?'', which, this kinda tries, it has an objective mark like Metroid Fusion, which, it works i guess, but also, i probably forgot all the NPC quests and little other things going that's just gonna tick off my OCD. Not as bad as Blasphemous tho', that one fails it miserably and i have yet to finish it cause i have to keep restarting it due to not knowing what the fuck was going on. Map is good, god i hate when Metroidvanias try getting cute with the map systems, just make it simple, give me the markers instantly, symbols for doors and items when i find them so i dont have to meander about looking for that item i couldnt get 10 hours ago but now i probably could if i could find the goddamn thing. Hollow Knight has one of the worst maps imo and completely ruined for me personally, just, good, simple, informative maps, those are the best.

While I respect your interpretation of the game, I don’t think the fact that the universe will likely go through heat death is evidence that material reality is a scam. Material Reality has never promised anybody anything, it just exists, as we exist, being the senses that are stimulated, and experiencing consciousness. No broken promises, nothing its trying it sell. It just exists to the degree by which you trust your senses.
@thenightwatchman15988 ай бұрын
keep going up or down the Russian nesting doll of reality, you eventually start to question if anything is even physical or substantive at all. that maybe well live in a big shared dream of some demiurge going through a fever. but hey, i guess its easier to parrot dogma from authorities and i dont blame him for his contempt for his audience if this is how they treat him.

The movement system definitely turned me off the game. So much precise platforming and precise timing that made me feel like the game was punishing me for exploring. Also your description of your religious belief sounds closer to gnosticism than agnosticism? I don't really care to tell you what you believe, I just thought your description of a material plane/humanity as the physical manifestation/divine sparks/fragments of a greater being fit closer to gnosticism?

13:55 I don't really think that's as deep a question as it seems. The Universe won't last forever, but we are going to be LONG extinct before that time. I think you are vastly underestimating how long it will take. If we somehow don't go extinct, which seems fundamentally impossible over the time spans we are talking about, we would've long long long long long (Repeat hundreds of times for effect) evolved past being human in any sense. We don't even know if our successor species will have a brain that functions in a way similar enough to even guess what it might think. There is not even any guarantee that our successors will be intelligent, evolution doesn't "prefer" intelligence.

I did not like this review, I view it as one of your more lackluster reviews. The opening joke felt flat and bad, unfortunately grime is neither new nor hot. Your talk about combat glosses over the pull move, which contrary to what you state you get quite early and is used in most boss fights to create major openings. Why is fall damage ( in a game about things falling and decaying) "insane", what's the alternate? Slap insta-death pits every five steps? 15 hours is short? I've played over 40 different indie metroidvanias , 15-20 hrs is the average and anything under 10 being considered short. With the story discussion you only talk about early game stuff and the final reveal. You used the bare bones of the story to jump into a philosophical talk while giving up on the rest of the story.
