The best advice from me (amateur gardener). Start small with a few plants the first year. Worst thing I did was till up my entire yard and plant 30 different types of veggies and fruits. It was overwhelming. Also a lot of those plants were "tricky" and I lost faith in myself because I failed. Try 3 or so plants the first year and then add one or two every year. (Also try to keep the seeds!)

That's a great idea! Start with something small and manageable and grow from there! I've had some great success with some herbs like Basil and mint growing well! 🪴

Water prices add up with our two garden boxes and grass on a suburb home lot of less than a quarter acre. Normally $39 month in winter, but up to $145/mo in spring/summer. Yes, you can save money on food for sure but you do need to be aware of other utilities and garden upkeep and care that is involved.

Wow! That's a huge increase in cost for water. Have you considered drip irrigation for your veg? Rain barrels? Using grey water? I LOVE my garden. I've been a gardener nearly all my adult life, but I think even I'd have to abandon it, if my water bill was that high. 😳

A lot of the veggies you buy at the grocery store,, like celery, and green onions. You can cut the root off at home, then go plant the root in a container of soil, and it grows! Free plants!!!

I been following Dave Ramsey and his team for the past year or so. I have become a master at budgeting. I have gift cards for almost everywhere. Example I go to Costco get a cash card, put in 60 dollars in there and I put gas, I make those 60 dollars stretch to the last penny. Is crazy. I been working paying off debt and the feeling I get after one debt has been crossed out of my list feels so good. I may be living a broke lifestyle now, but in the future self made millionaires thanks to Dave Ramsey and his team.

Also beets are easy and very low maintenance. You can eat the leaves in salad, then pick the beet for easy pickling

Love this! We have a small garden in the mountains of Maine so our grow time is limited but we can grow a little (mostly beans and tomatoes). I am jealous of the length of your grow season! We can plant the beginning of June and have to be done by mid/end of September.

Have you tried looking into a hoop system? I live in Idaho zone 3b and also have a short season. I tried the hoop system on raised beds and it actually extended my growing season. I was able to plant tomatoes 2nd week of May. When temperatures dipped below freezing i would still cover with old sheets to give my tomatoes extra covering.

She didn't take into account the cost for water. You could potentially do rain barrels but those may cost at first and they can rust if they are metal. And if you live in a cold climate may have to start the plants with grow lights inside. Not to mention not letting the plants frost. And tomatoes can be difficult to grow. May have to get a special spray and trimming certain parts of the plant. Etc.

Contact your local cooperative extension office, they have great information for home gardeners that's researched, proven, and it's all FREE! Many counties have a Master Gardener Helpline you can call to ask questions; they offer classes, and are a wealth of FREE information. Growing your own food has health benefits beyond the fruits and vegetables, like exercise, fresh air, & sunshine. Even the microbes in the soil provide health benefits when you dig in the dirt. Gardening is also beneficial to our mental health. It truly is a win, win!

I'm really confused on why this took 22.5 mins to say, "grow your own food" and why she was excusing herself from using the term - self-sufficient. I felt like they could have provided more useful information, ie: buying seeds online vs local, suggestions on building raised gardens, boxes, visit the Farmer's Almanac to see when the growing season starts in your area, what type of pesticides to use, I just felt like this was 22.5 mins of talk-talk.
