The grossest part of owning horses... (viewer discretion is advised) sheath cleaning! 🤢 The smell that never seems to go away (seriously, use gloves), the risk of getting kicked, the struggle of trying to get ahold of it, and let’s not forget about the nastiness that makes up a “bean”. Let’s face it, if we own geldings then it’s just something we need to do. Mares need to be cleaned too, but it’s not nearly as much of an ordeal or as concerning. In this video you’ll see the nitty gritty of sheath cleaning; our vet will clean several horses sheaths using her preferred product, ivory dish soap.
If you enjoyed this video and would like to learn more about horses and real life in the barn, I invite you to join me on my journey with horsemanship. You can start by hitting the subscribe button and turning on notifications so you never miss a video. Thanks for watching!

This kind of thing is so taboo for many. Read a truly horrific story of a man arrested for cleaning his geldings and mares because a snoopy neighbor hated watching him clean his horses thoroughly in the front yard. He got arrested for animal abuse because the neighbor supposedly saw the man doing this for pleasure. Just have a keen eye if you live close by someone and they have no clue what the hell is going on. In other words, people are ignorant and dumb about this stuff, so just be wary of doing this where people can view.

Here is a great tip for everyone who is attempting to do this: When my equine dentist comes to work on my horses's mouth he sedates them for the entire procedure. When he sedates them, a stallion will often 'drop' naturally. I make the most of the situation and don my gloves and get my cleaning solution out,, and I have MORE than enough time to do all the cleaning. A sedated horse is far less likely to kick or be rowdy during the cleaning process so I get more bank for my buck by doing the cleaning when my farrier is doing his thing.
@envytee9659
@envytee9659 4 жыл бұрын
But at the same time you don't want to sedate any animal, human or not, unless you really have to. There are number of reasons why, complications and cost to name a few.

I have 2 geldings, 1 gets beans a lot, so I clean him monthly, just rub his tummy for a minute, he drops, he will have smegma all up/down his sheath, so I use an empty yogurt container filled w/ warm tap water, dunk it in & wash off all that stuff, then dig out any beans, he will have a few ... he knows it brings relief so cooperates. When he first went lame, I couldn't figure out what was going on until a good cowboy explained it to me. My other gelding is a little tougher, but he will drop, just takes a bit longer. I cleaned my horse's sheath weekly, with water only,when I gave him his bath. Winter, I just went up there and used my fingers. When you do it often, a problem never arrived in 20 years for me. I never found anything gross about taking care of my horse. I loved every thing I did for him. And he appreciated me doing that. this way, no itching for him . But I also know some horses don't let you touch them there. A vet is asked to do the cleaning. I got my horse used to being touched there when he was very young.

Wondering what soap was used . I had the State College Vets from the Vet Hospital come out yearly for dental work and sheath cleaning for geldings. They used ivory soap and did not rinse the soapy water out. I noticed each year the horses looked worse and now they are horrible. I have a new vet that I will have do this work in the future. But it would be good to talk about what a vet should and should not do. I also want to say that one of the female vets complained the whole time and once even said I am not finishing this guy because someone else is not cleaning him. Obviously a vet has to sedate them. One vet told me to get a warm rag and hold it against their sheath, they would drop and I could happily clean it. He did not stay to see how that worked out. It cost a lot to have a vet come out to sedate and clean them When a vet comes for a visit trustworthiness should be heavy on their mind.

I do not know what the big deal is about sheath cleaning. It is easy, quick and important, especially if the horse is prone to “beans.” If your horse drops when relaxed, a quick check for a bean can help you find and remove tin before it gets big enough to cause discomfort. I never needed to have a vet come out for something that a bucket of warm water and a bottle of sheath cleaner could do. The horse should not need sedation unless he has poor ground manners.

We had a gelding and he got a stone (a pretty big stone) stuck on his sheath and stuck next to/nearly on him so every time he needed to got to the toilet the stone would get dragged and cause him pain - the people who were loaning him didn’t really go to see him often and were clueless about basically everything (wouldn’t groom properly and care for him at the highest standard) so the owner ended up having to remove it - poor thing was uncomfortable 24/7 Check your horses over regularly!

Very good video. Surprised by all the owners that didn't know this was necessary. I'd read all about it when I was pre teen. Spent a lot of time on family farm/ranch so learned early how bulls become steers, how to clean fish, dress a deer, etc. Was a nurse/medic, so not much bothers me, except the "feel" of some things & smell. I've taken crap for it over the years but I have to wear gloves for fish & other stinky, slimy things!

I used to volunteer at a horse rescue so, of course, cleaning the sheath was obviously something we had to do. Most of the horses really enjoyed it. One of the first times I performed a cleaning I used too much cleaner and didn't rinse it out enough and the poor boy became swollen, I felt so bad. It was swollen for about 1 1/2 days and after that I never used cleaner, just water, and picked out the beans.

A very informative video. I have my vet clean my gelding annually. But my boy is very good about dropping for me so I'm going to give it a try. I've been softening up the smegma so that it's easier to clean. With so many flies this year I just don't want to take a chance of a parasite getting into my boy's sheath, which happened to another horse at the barn where I board my horse. So thank you for the video and the education. It's also important to look at the stream of a horse when he's urinating. The 1st time I cleaned up my horse, Doc, it was when he came over and urinated right in front of me with effort and seemed uncomfortable so I checked and sure enough he had some good size beans and after he was all cleaned up he was one happy boy. Again, thank you.

I had two geldings for many years and learned the hard way about this necessity from my vet. One of my geldings was much worse than the other one and was very crusty and just downright dirty. Luckily this was an annual thing for my vet to do when he came out for their shots and foot trimming and teeth floating. I didn’t want to do it myself because I was afraid I wouldn’t do it right.

This is basically the same thing you have to do if you have an uncircumsized child. But when the child grows older, you teach them how to clean themselves. But my point is that everyone thinks its gross to not circumcise your male children. I think its the way males are supposed to be. You were made that way and just like with male animals, humans have a "cover" or sheath over their penis too. Its just not really looked at it that way i guess. I dont see anything wrong with a guy being uncircumcised. I actually was just telling someone about how you have to clean make horses this way. I found out about it when my aunt use to work on a horse farm. My cousin told me and said they can get health issues if it's not cleaned.

Very interesting. I feel a bit sad because I had a wonderful gelding some 30 years ago. I was quite young at the time, and didn’t know much, but his foreskin was very tender and swollen. I asked about it but, got no conclusive answers, different people, including veterinarians, gave me different answers. Now I realized that this was probably what he needed. So thanks for sharing, I wish that I would have known it back then. Well, well - apart from this he lived a happy life for the 18 (of total 25) I had him at least.
