When they're at the Drive-In theater, and beyond the melodrama, the shit hits the fan and the tornado tears through the Movie screen showing the iconic "Here's Johnny!" bit from "The Shining". I know the juxtaposition of the violence on screen and the violence of nature was a shovel to the face in terms of symbolism, but its a creepy and effective visual.

Movies like Twister, Dante's Peak, Volcano, Daylight paved the way for disaster movies in terms of realistic grounded visual effects, I still remember when they first released in the 90's and being blown away by the scope and the realism of them, still to this day they hold up really well and am still in awe of the visual and practical effects and the cinematography.

I watched this the other day for the first time in probably 10 years and I was blown away by the art of the vfx, it was so well done and grounded and real, but also exhilarating and he was made almost 30 years ago. This is an incredible film through and through.

One of the great Summer Blockbusters. I hate the word “iconic” but well… Twister truly was and IS that. You knew summer was coming when you the trailers coming out for films like these.

As a kid, Jurassic Park (1993), Terminator 2 (1991) and Twister (1996) blew my mind. My passion for movies today is thanks to these pictures. How great the 90's were.

CINEFEX did a great article on Twister. That's where I read about Stefen Fangmeier and the groundbreaking CGI vfx work he has done. Almost a decade later I got to work at ILM.

Six year old me was already terrified when I saw the poster, and the movie itself definitely delivered the groceries. My favorite part was when the huge house is suddenly rolled out onto the road, and they drive through it.😅 the interior shots throughout the house and accompanying foley for the truck smashing through the stairs, furniture, walls, and wall decorations really sell it. Moments like that make you believe that anything can happen.

That shot always cracks me up 😅 I think for me it's always that scene when they hold on to the pipe.

De Bont just doesn't get enough credit for his overall contributions to film. With Red October, Die Hard, and Basic Instinct (not to mention Black Rain, and Flatliners), he basically created an aesthetic that would resonate for more than a decade. Then you have Speed, perhaps the most perfectly paced action film ever made. It is an absolute wonder of lean filmmaking. And yes, he also made Speed 2 which is hopelessly bloated and adrift in all the wrong ways, but he also gave us Twister which is so good that we've now made it twice.

I assure you all, "Twisters" is a much better film than you'd ever expect it to be. Even if you love the first one but see it as dumb fun or whatever. This new one has everything the first one had but with a MUCH better story and characters. I was pleasantly surprised

The dialog was cheese most of the time, however the action and the effects were amazing. Also only time I've seen a Dodge truck stay on the road for that long but still be moving under its own power and then is eaten by the main bad guy of the movie.

@@FrameVoyager Its not the first Blockbuster film to be sold by Imagery/Concept alone, and the story comes later. Which is why I don't know what the hell Twisters is gonna be. I honestly love the scene when they try the first Dorothy deployment, Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt have to deal with a script that makes the tornados into the shark from Jaws. Spielberg Schmaltz

I don’t think no one ask for sequels for twister and Independence Day back in the 90’s. We liked it and done. We moved on. No one wanted to see same shit over and over again. Since studio spending too much money on marketing, all we can get is remake, reboot or sequels only But twister might be can work. Because many young generation had no idea how this was big back then.
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager 4 ай бұрын
Oh, for sure. Honestly would be nice to have less sequels nowadays. But it was surprising to not get a sequel because of how financially successful it is was at the time.

Great video. But please tone done that film grain. You are using it it to point where it just makes the video too blurry and noisy. I get it that you have to sell the plugin, but please, we need to at least be able to see some details. Already the archival footage you source is of low quality and then you people throw this grain emulation and the clips look not good. Please take care of this in future.
@FrameVoyager
@FrameVoyager 4 ай бұрын
The only place I'm using that plugin is for the quotes. The footage from all of this is from like the 90s so none of it is great quality but I'm not throwing any film grain on top of it. The film grain your seeing is because some of this was shot on film cameras lol

The effects were great, but idk if iever actually finished watching it, though i tried many times. I LOVE 90's action movies but this was quite an abysmal movie with such bad dialogue that i could never take it seriously. I think it's a movie that you need to see in a theatre, because beside the carnage the rest is terrible lol
@FrameVoyager

That's mostly what I was saying haha. I like the film, but it overall it's not like a "great" film. It's a landmark for sure, but it's ok to admit those effects just didn't age well

Twister was unquestionably the worst movie I have ever seen and the only movie I have struggled not to walk out on. Truly the dumbest plot, the worst acting, and I was dumbfounded how Spielberg put his name on it. I was excited to see a flying cow. And boy, that is all it was.
