Balkans love freedom without chains. They were never slave owners because it does not exist with them and has never existed since the Vinča culture 8000 years ago. They express their freedom towards the conquerors through rebellion or music. The trumpet is an excellent example of that, although there are also accordions, flutes, and bagpipes. There is no guitar in the Balkan ethnos. The car goes with the music. The circuit tracks each instrument in time. Now there are differences, for example Macedonians play in 7/8 time while Serbs play 2/2 "double" and so on. Everything has been beautifully integrated here in the last 8000 years from the South Slavs - Yugoslavians as dominant, Greeks, Dacians, Huns, Illyrians, Goths, Thracians, Turks, Etruscans, Hittites, Lambobards, Germans, Vikings, Gepids, Avars, Hungarians, Latins and numerous others. All those peoples were Slavicized into today's population of the Balkans and they all brought their ETHNO sound and dance.

Thanks for the documentary! Reports on Serbia worldwide tend to focus on less cheerful topics, but people here are proud and very hospitable. With a little respect shown, they will treat you like a family member. Unfortunately, we've been living through some hard times, but some say that hard times make good men/women. Highly recommend the next topic for Serbia to be archeological. Some of the oldest neolithic settlements and some of Europe's richest heritage lay in Serbia (Vinca, Lepenski Vir, Branicevo, Sirmium, Naisus), as well as medieval history. Another similar topic could be Bosnian Sevdah music. I wouldn't be overstating if I compare it to American blues. Balkans is a beautiful region with turbulent past, but nonetheless worth visiting and more.

They pour water because it flows and finds its way. In Turkey they say leave and come back like the water. It's amazing to come across these things in other countries, it's kind of the nice Ottoman legacy.
@58479ishere5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a wonderful tradition but please don't forget about your other nice Ottoman legacies of colonialism, serfdom, robbing and plundering of Balkan lands for the Sultans' coffers, enslaving Balkan women into your harems, the blood tax imposed on Balkan Christian families known as the janissary corps, and my favourite gift of all from your imperial era: past and current inter-ethnic conflict due to your policies of dividing and conquering our populations through Islam by segragating our people by religious class and giving one group more freedom and a way to rule over their own brethern leading down a bloody shit show that still hasn't been resolved centuries later.

Seeing this documentary I agree with lot of stuff. But as a Serbian and I know what happens there, you guys missed out a lotttttttt. Im talking about true Serbian traditions and much more. You showed (no offence), a gypsy family that is again no offence, poor and is trying to make something of them self. Why did you not show the big bears like Dejan Petrovic etc. And also say that there is over half a million of people in that small village for those 4 days. Fyi, that festival used to be 7 days before.
