I love all their albums and continue to watch them closely. "In Cythera" pretty much got me through ending my life when my girlfriend passed away last year. True story. Although not Goth, Hugh Cornwells /Stranglers 1st post Punk album "Black & White" is such a stark brutal genius album... check out Hughs guitar sound on it. As always JJ Burnels bass on this album just ramps up the sledgehammer smashing brutal sound even more than on any previous songs/albums, especially on the song "Tank". Good video. Just to clarify, despite what it says in the documentary, it was actually the reception area of `Melody Maker` where Jaz did his infamous liver dump-They used to have a kind of indie music Gossip Column called TTT every week in the publication and they printed a picture of Jaz in a swimming pool from a few years earlier and made some disparaging comments- He was one of their regular targets because he was so outspoken and disparaging of the music press and they used to use it to get back at him i guess- but the funny thing is is that the Melody Maker were probably the most supportive music paper (followed by `Sounds` )of the band at the time- especially in the mid-eighties- they seemed to have a love/hate relationship with the band- In the end of year readers polls that they used to run KJ would often get `Best live act.`

I think Raven was the one that figured out how to play bass to Gordie's guitar. Gordie's guitar playing is so unusual that many bass players would be mystified on how to play bass to it. I think Youth heard what Raven was doing on the bass, and he got it. When Raven passed, and Youth came back in Youth was able to pick up right away with what to do with the bass.

When I picked up Killing Joke's recent record Pylon a few years back, not only did I like it, I was intrigued on how great it sounded for high gain for P90s pickups. It sounds like he is using the neck pickup on it too, not sure but still, it's different versus what most are doing in the modern era.

A couple more of Killing Joke’s interesting sonic attributes you didn’t mention: A) Jaz Coleman’s Oberheim OB-X synthesizer. Their secret weapon that punctuates all my favorite tracks from the first five albums. A legendary synthesizer in its own right, it’s incredibly cool how Jaz incorporated it into their music. B) Martin “Youth” Glover, their original bass player and founding member. While I’m sure they were all massive dub reggae enthusiasts, Youth’s entire vibe was right up there with Jah Wobble as far as the whole Punky Reggae/White Boy Reggae/Post-Punk Dub thing goes. You mention at 19:35 that Raven couldn't go back to the UK.. I saw him play for the last time with KJ a couple of months before he died at the Astoria, unless I'm misunderstanding you. Fun fact if nobody has mentioned it, Nirvana stole their riff for Come as You Are from Killing Joke's Eighties, Jaz scrubbed it off after Kurt's death. Personally, I think you'll find most people that say they hate Jaz because they're fucking terrified of him. If you've met him he's a very big and very intimidating commodity, you'd have to be nuts to sit opposed to him as a journalist and tell him what you think he'd literally tear you to pieces. Also, I'm not an instrument tech so I have no clue, but one thing about Geordie has always fascinated me and that's his stroke of the strings. I've stood 4 feet in front of him for ages watching this delicate gentle waver that he uses to stroke his strings, I don't know what the tech-heads call that but it's unlike anything I've ever seen in any other guitar player. One last thing (again bear with me I don't know) but 'apparently' part of Geordies unique sound is because his guitar is deliberately de-tuned, I heard that somewhere a long time ago, thought it may have been mentioned here, maybe it's not a thing. Another great watch thanks for this one.

I took that Raven info re passports from an interview with Jaz. Well said re Geordies style. It's almost like a balladeer strum from folk. I never thought about it. All I know is that I'm a good guitarist and I sounded clunky compared to him. It's aggressive and graceful at the same time.

Circle of Tone is there any chance you can do a video dedicated to Paul Raven? You start to go into it around the 9:40 mark and I wish you continued. His work with Killing Joke and Prong was so prolific. The guy could groove for days. In fact, I feel he is overlooked by Geordie at times. His tone was HUGE! and it supported and complemented Geordie's tone wonderfully. Not convinced? Listen to Epic Records run of Prong. Beg to Differ (Mike Kirkland) and Prove You Wrong (Troy Gregory) and compare them to Cleansing/Rude Awakening (Paul Raven). Troy Gregory, was the most technical out of the three and I love that he slapped on parts of that album (I also think that's a very overlooked Prong record) but in my opinion, both his and Kirklands tone is Mickey Mouse compared to Raven's. At the end of the day, I would love to see a dedicated video to the man. I feel young bass players should be aware of him and I think you are the guy to do it. Thanks and keep up the good work!

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Thank you for the response. I know! There is not a lot out there on him. I don't know much about he used on albums, more so live... my comment may be moot. Off the top of my head, I can tell you that he used various basses and was not loyal to one instrument like Geordie. In the early run of his KJ days, he used Trace Elliot amps. Early on accompanying the Trace Elliots, he used headless basses. In certain live performances of the band, it sounds like he could have been using flat-wound strings. That could just be the audio from the old footage toying with my ears, but I wouldn't put it past him. Throughout his career, he seems to use a 4x10 cab resting upon a 2x15 cab. He also used a lot of Music Mann basses and seemed to favor that style pickup. Later on in the Prong and especially in the Ministry era, he used humbuckers like EMG's in his basses. Towards the end of his life, I've seen photos of him using Schecter's with EMG's. This obviously would stem from Al and Tommy's relationship with the company. Tommy Victor was on Danko Jones' podcast and told the story of how Raven got into Prong which was actually a funny story. Any information I've found on the man was by watching youtube videos and podcasts. It sucks that there are not more concrete answers out there on his gear. Whatever I come up with I'll definitely add to this comment. Cheers!

Another great episode! If you feel like doing requests, how about Herbage from Department S.? Sure, they took a huge step away from the punk roots of the scene in their looks, but they definitely nailed the Zeitgeist with their sound and lyrics. And much as "Is Vic there?" is probably their only well-known song - "I Want" is so much better! Amazingly, they are actually still making music, too.

Bill Nelson used a Burman amp on the 1978 album "Sound on Sound". Not quite Goth, but New Wave at its finest.

I am one of those losers who found out about Killing Joke from Metallica. Not even mad or ashamed about it, this band kicks ass and I am happy to have found them, no matter the route. I am also one of those bridge = rhythm/neck = lead pickup goons.... at least for metal/high gain. More rockin/low gain tones, definitely best to go the traditional way. Concerning your "where is the weird setups/gear" (paraphrase) section, I would like to mention that noise/grind bands (usually with silly subgenre names. ie - mince, splatter, gore, etc etc) use all sorts of whacky gear. Usually due to monetary issues, but there is definitely cool shit sometimes, but you are also correct in that most people just use the basics. I definitely use the SM57, but fuck Vintage 30's. Eminence Wizards, baby. Or Creambacks if you can swing the cash.

Is that you clipping the mic, the input, or some added saturation in mixing on your vocals? sounds great! I've lived off of I-95 in three different states, Massachusetts, Florida, and North Carolina! Shit... and Rhode Island briefly!

Yep it's analog clipping my 1073 style pre is a Chameleon Labs preamp into a dbx 160 compressor. I like it too. I'm going to be hitting I95 today. Hehe

@@CIRCLEOFTONE Nice. thought that sounded analog. checking out the Chameleon labs stuff right now (of course). my favorite analog distortion is when i clip the crap out of my old 90's Carvin studio mixer board and the inputs on my focusrite scarlett interface. I get that really old school sounding smooth clipping saturation. was really happy when i did that by accident recording a quick DI, and was glad i was monitoring when i did it. lol.
