Thats genuinely why i think the gun devil arc is the best arc in all of csm, most of the start of the arc is just text, no dramatic fight or zoomed in deaths. Tbh, when Makima explained what the Gun devil was, for the 1st time, It felt like an eldritch horror to me. The way how Fujimoto just shows the destruction from afar and how fast everything is going down and how something is responsible for all that decimation and destruction. Its already scary to think about the experiences of shooting victims, and that scene I mentioned made it worse for me. And also because of that scene, i got hooked and continued reading. I love this manga

The choice of music, the cuts, the font against a simple black background, paired with how coldly scientific the event is described in the manga, like written on a military report, is just bone chilling. I think the scariest thing about the Gun Devil isn’t so much the scope of destruction it causes, but how extremely specific and almost premeditated it seems. It’s abilities have seemingly random but highly specific conditions and targets in mind. It’s not just some random force of uncaring, destructive nature. It’s a genocidal hitman with an individual assassination plan for everything in its wake. The fact it can kill so quickly on such a large scale, but so precisely makes it so much more terrifying to me than almost anything else in fiction.

I interpreted it as both. We have two things to fear: the immense power and violence of the Gun Devil (or rather, guns themselves), and the people who will weaponize it. Guns are not particularly scary if you ignore the human factor, but given to a person, who suddenly has the power to end another's life, guns become scary. Humans are not particularly scary if they aren't given power, but when they're armed with tools to annihilate whoever they choose, human nature becomes scary.

1997 was the year of a major school shooting in Kentucky. It wasn't the first school shooting in the states, but it was notable because the perpetrator killed three and injured five students while they were in a prayer circle. I think (based on old information I'd read years ago that I can't find now), this was one of the "inspirations" for the Columbine shooting a couple of years later which became more popularly documented as a "major school shooting" when Americans talk about it. When the shooter of the 1997 Kentucky attack surrendered and dropped his weapons, he said "Kill me, please. I can't believe I did that." The chosen date of September 12th obviously brings to mind September 11th, which makes sense with one of the deep-set themes of CSM being the global "War on Terrorism" that expanded beyond the realm of American politics and experiences. It makes sense too with the positioning of Makima as Japan's "answer" to that violence. All of this is crazy impressive and more evidence of how much thought went into this series about a dude who's head turns into a chainsaw. I love it lol.

I think you're also downplaying the importance of this subject to Fujimoto. Its a deliberate move on his part to have the US president barter with the life expectancy of the American population for the "aid" of the Gun Devil. My friend and I actually looked this up and did the math after reading that panel - mass shooting violence in the united states reduces the average American life expectancy by almost exactly 100 days. Weird and awful little factoid! And even if that doesn't directly line up with the "one year" that is put into the deal, that adds context for how USAmericans will read this scene and what they bring to it.

Dude… this is so perfect… and you’re one of the only people who could match a song so brutally perfect with a scene from Chainsaw Man. Like this gave me genuine chills, it’s so terrifyingly beautiful, soooo good job man… I to this day still think that there’s so many songs from Clowncore’s Van album that fit Chainsaw Man, like “Tears of God” paired with Reze telling Denji she wants to run away with him, then it shifts to “Keyboard” when it’s revealed she BIT HIS TONGUE OFF. “Existence” (with just a bit of editing) is a great song pared with Beam and Denji vs Typhoon devil, like they’re just acting like idiots until they BOLT to Reze and Typhoon. Then they fight. The ending I always have a reverb effect in my head to show how she just cuts the music to a halt when she blasts Denji and Beam down. I don’t know if you’re reading this… but all I’m gonna ask, is PLEASE do more of these, you obviously get how to pair editing and pacing with music to make a perfect scene :)

I think the best part of the anime is how little text they'd actually need to convey this. Just cutting back and forth to a timer counting down every passing second as the scene unfolds can afford a lot more time dedicated to the kill count. Really give you that uncomfortable feeling as even after the timer stops the names just keep coming.

I remember the feeling I got when reading this scene. The impressive destructive force of nature that is the Gun devil. Seeing every name. Seeing the destruction, the deaths, everything. This feeling of fear was so intense. Then, I remember the SHEER TERROR I got when I saw Makima DESTROY this force of nature. Honestly, I was hesitant to click this. The gun devil sequence is one of my favorite things ever put on a page. I doubted this rando youtube recommendation would live up to my comically high expectations for it so I was just gonna skip it. But lingering in my brain was "what if it is that good though?" So I gave it a chance. And I love it. It handled the names and the shots of the gun devil's victims perfectly. It didn't linger too long on the devil itself and my only point of contention is the Makima stuff but that's just personal preference and only the last few seconds of the video anyways. Great stuff
