SKS was the Soviet effort to replace the Nagant with a stripper clip loaded semi-auto rifle. It would have become the Soviet version of the M1 Garand, except its cartridge was a less powerful 7.62x39 cartridge (same as was used in the AK-47 that displaced it). The SKS, even if converted for 30 round duckbill detachable magazines, would be among my last choices for a practical rifle for any purpose. If it was the only one in the closet to defend myself from violence, I'd use it, only if I didn't have any other long arm to use.
