The Guys Who Rent Out Rooms in Amsterdam's Red Light District

In this episode of our series on the Amsterdam Red Light District, we tag along with room rental company Agapi.
Agapi is known as the nicest window rental company in the area. It is run by Devenando and Barry, both in their twenties, who have nothing to do with pimps and other shady businesses. They get along well with the prostitutes who they rent out rooms to and on occasion they have a barbecue together or go eat pancakes on the Pancake Boat in the canals.
The Red Light District in Amsterdam is notorious for many things. In 2016 we created the series "Achter de Wallen" (Behind the Red Light District), in which we follow the people who work in this neighborhood every day, to get to know the area from their perspective. No pimps, drug dealers or junkies - but cleaners, bachelor party guides and the friendliest window rental company in Amsterdam, where sex workers sometimes come to bake apple pie for each other.

I absolutely love that about Agapi and the people behind it. Not just taking the girls in but befriending and defending them. In my opinion prostitution should not be seen as a crime. If a woman wants to be a sex worker then that's her choice and her right, and provisions should be made to ensure she can work safely. I mean it's done for every other job in the world right? Huge respect for these guys.

@@richardphilpott1013 Agreed, though if they really want to be supportive they should also provide certain resources like free STD-testing and birth-control. Also, because a significant number of sex workers is in that line of work as a last option (even when not coerced by someone), so providing information about financial aid, psychological support services, lawyers and rehab etc. would also be a good idea. I don't know if they already do that, but it would add value to their service to the sex workers. There are some non-profit organisations in the Netherlands that do this already iirc, but the more the better right?

How is it being glamorized? Our feelings and opinions about this industry are irrelevant. Sex work is ancient and to think that by trying to ban it, it will end is being naïve. Sex work needs to be regulated to make sure they are safe. Point is that sex workers are humans that deserve to be treated with dignity and respect but many people lose sight of that.
