Two corrections/notes: - Better than Wolves CE isn't a modpack, but a single total conversion mod - You REALLY shouldn't be playing in hardcore mode. BTW has a feature called 'Hardcore Respawn' that basically acts as a pseudo-hardcore mode, where you'll respawn somewhere entirely different upon death-playing on hardcore gets rid of that gameplay loop.

Having played GT:NH for 380+ hours and BTW for... long enough to die over a hundred times... GT is progression grind, BTW is survival grind. In GT:NH, you gotta spend hours studying it, getting a degree for it. But at least you have something to show for 20 hours of play time - a base, some basic shelter, maybe a few machines? In BTW, you're never getting far. It's so easy to run out of food, or get jumped and die. And when you die you respawn like, 5000 blocks away, with no idea where you are, starting from scratch. Once more punching threes for minutes on end just to get a few sticks. The road to complete New Horizons is a decades long study, but BTW keeps resetting you to the "minutes of punching trees" start over and over, therefore earning the title of "most grindy" in my mind.

@@maciekkozicki3379 BTW is just practice and error and learning, one will eventually manage to complete it after some weeks or a month or two with help of guides or not. While GT:NH just doesn't let you complete it as of right now. Adding that most players play GT:NH on peaceful or easy, just imagine in Hardcore and Hard Difficulty. GT:NH obliterates grinding over all things. And the difficulty is hidden because of the need of playing in peaceful or easy, otherwise, GT:NH would be impossible to beat

Still, I believe trial, error and resetting to nothing despite being so close to the finish is more grindy, since you have to do the same things all over and they take a long time. BTW is just less varied than GT:NH and that's grindy to me. Also, I think I played GT:NH on normal. It's mostly working with machines, so difficulty of mobs didn't play *that much* into it. (Also who the heck is playing on peaceful when you *need* mob drops to progress?!)

This mod really demands an acquired taste to be fair. I've been playing it on-and-off for a decade. The mod really expects a lot from you since a momentary lapse in judgement can screw you over really badly. But after the first night the tedium eases a bit if you can get some stone tools. I would recommend carrying dirt slabs around to reduce the need for jumping and using the world generation to your advantage for hunkering down for the night ie. natural caves.

I'm a bit annoyed that it's being called a modpack, when it's really just a single mod. There are community mods for it, but they're not part of the experience. Hardcore Mode is also entirely not recommended, and actually ruins part of the experience of the mod. You're meant to die a few times, because you respawn in different places each time. It's like starting a new world, but actually has a purpose. As you die, rebuild, and die again, you start to build up a collection of bases, and you'll begin learning the land. Eventually, you'll be able to return to bases, letting you build up much faster, and maybe eventually you'll build a central base connected to key areas for when you respawn.

TIPs for surviving first night: You can get sharp stone with sharp stone way faster than with sticks The best first base to make is to dig 3 trenches that are only 1 block deep and place the dirt you get on the middle two blocks. Be mindful of the ends of the trench as zombies and skeletons can often jump in from there if you didn't round off the ends. Don't jump at all. Just make steps with slaps every where.

The mod is 12 years old. But the current difficulty is not that old. At the start it only added new machines and stuff. Then a few years later came the hardcore updates. That rebalanced the game, increasing the challenge. Then came 2018 with, after a long-ish hiatus, the AAAAAAAHH update, the current dificulty you are playing now, after a few more balance passes.

The OG version of it is the one I remember hearing about way back when and involved stuff like massive passive animal spawning setups to fuel a meat grinding factory, which no doubt influenced/inspired better with mods and maybe Create. You could try an old game called UnReal World, it has that tipe of premise of frustrating realistic survival game (and its free on its website). the controls can be frustraring at first so if you do try, i recomend making a cheat sheet with all the controls. better then wolves is very slow and tedious....but its fun somehow you always have something to do even if your just hiding in a hole you can do so many stuff to fill your time while hiding your always doing something one of the things you can do is knitting if you put 2 pointy stick in the crafting area and put 2 wool with the knitting sticks

The start can be slow. But as you start getting more and more powerful the more you progress it is very rewarding and it has a lot of cool stuff. Nice automations with tbe OG hopper and a bunch of machines. A self replicating carnivorous mold you can set free in the nether to stop spawns. A much better beacon system than vanilla where beacons dont habe ui and instrad the base material determines it's effect. And a lot more.

Terrafirmacraft GregTech: New Horizons Nomnifactory .... And MANY more that are MUCH MUCH HARDER!! If your argument is that these are not "hard" but "grindya nd tedious".... well, you are half right. They are tedious, but it is difficult to organize so many things to work in sync. The true challenge of these mods is optimization and efficiency in your progress, not the actual progress itself. For example, one can get a stargate in GTNH in 20,000 hours while someone could in only 3,000 hours. The hard part is to do something as efficient in the long run as possible. And because there are millions upon millions of steps, you are basically playing 5D chess.

Maybe you're saying this in comparison to TFC, which I've never played, but... there is a ton of content baked into BetterThanWolves. It is, like TFC, a total conversion. Survival is only the first (and most brutal) aspect of it. Later on, it becomes a fully fledged tech mod with a lot of automation possible. All of this leads to there being easily 100+ hours of gameplay, completing meaningful tasks: traveling infrastructure (to help with recovering from dying), multiple mobtraps, farms, resource processing automations, ... Not to mention the Community Edition of BTW is still under active development 🙂 You write that you love it, so I'm actually genuinely curious as to why you think BTW doesn't have a lot of content.

I know how to make this mod worse, yet still "possible"- It's a user controled breathing function that the player has to physically do that matches up with the shorter days in Minecraft to real life. Also yes you have a constant chance to choke on spit or a bug in the game, then die.
