NOT EVERY PART IS A SLUM OR RUINS... This is what CNN, Nat Geo, Movies, or others never showed you guys before or after the quake. All we see is ugly! A lot is, but a lot isn't. Yes Haiti is very poor, and it just got leveled by the earthquake, it will take many years to even get back close to normal. Although it is poor, what cant be taken away is its rich culture, and strength. If you saw the coverage you saw people who already had nothing, got that leveled, and still praise God, they still chant, they still have hope, they still move on. Our culture has great sounding music, great tasting food (not mud pies that you see the kids with nothing eat on tv), nice dancing, and hard working family oriented people. It's hard to find Haitian American scum in the US... They come here and do great things. Port au Prince should have never been that poor and overcrowded, but with Haiti now all over the news and awareness is everywhere, people forget that its a whole country and not just Port au Prince. People can invest time, money and effort outside that crowded city. Many Haitians can relocate to the other provinces. Life can be restored somehow...
Its hard to make some/little forward progress and then have to deal with natural disasters that the country cant handle at this point...(hurricanes, mudslides, and now an earthquake)
Many reasons as to why Haiti is the way it is after 200 years of freedom... Yes there has been corruption, but interference has devastated the place. We have all contributed to Haiti's misfortunes, but the former colonial power France and the current colonial power the US, bear most responsibility. They punished the former slaves for their temerity in throwing off both slavery and French colonial rule: the US could forgive them for kicking out the French, but to abolish slavery was unforgivable. Washington refused to recognise its neighbouring republic for 60 years.
By then, the French had virtually bankrupted Haiti through its demands for exorbitant reparations. Haiti was in the grip of a chronic political instability that was exacerbated by foreign interests keen to exploit both its weakness and its resources. In 1915 the US finally occupied the country, in part to remove the influence of rival European powers, and ran it like a colony for nearly 20 years. Haiti has rarely been free of US interference since.
The long-running dictatorship of Papa Doc Duvalier was supported by the US, as was the succession of his son, Baby Doc. After Baby Doc's departure, in 1986, the US attempted to fix the first elections, a policy that led directly to the election day violence in November 1987. Undeterred, Washington continued to meddle. When Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the hugely popular former priest, was finally elected president in 1991, he was ousted in a coup before the end of the year. President Clinton negotiated his return in 1994, reportedly on condition that he accept a US blueprint for Haiti's economic development. When Aristide won a second election in 2001, he was again deposed, in 2004, this time forcibly flown by George W Bush's administration to exile in Africa, where he remains.

My dad's Haitian and my mom is American. I've never been to Haiti, and my dad tells me all the time I should visit. He said it' isn't what all what they make it seem to be. However, my dad's family was considered rich in Haiti. He said he can move back to Haiti and love lovely it just that Haiti didn't have the oppurtunites American has. From this slide show I think I might take him up on his offer!!!! Thanks for sharing!

What a beautiful nation, you know what they are cathedrals, plazas and parks is much similarity to other departments of my country, I am writing to Nicaragua, what a shame that they sell advertising on the outside of your country is so negative. A country so of cute, which is seen immersed in this catastrophe is painful, may God keep and protect you always, and that makes haiti get out of this collapse, and that all citizens can have a better standard of living, and especially peace. Bless!

One of the original members of the NAACP was Haitian. His name is WEB Du Bois. There is a massive chance that he initially came with the idea. He was the first black that went to Harvard University. You see ladybug, if it wasn't for Haiti and Haitians, there would be absolutely no President Obama and all the rest that you've mentioned. There's a big chance that slavery would still be present. We Haitians love the success of the black race. That's what we've always wanted! Learn before you speak!

Haiti is really one of the most beautiful countries in the Caribbean. I think its quite sad how National Geographic and other sections of the Media only tries to show the poverty of Haiti. They don't show as much poverty in any other country in the Caribbean, as they do when it comes to Haiti. Whats up with that ? Poverty is in every country in Latin America. I think its messed up how Haiti is always singled out. Haiti is the Pearl of all the islands.

@NicKingPapiChulo The problem with the media showing the empoverished part of a country only is that it kills its touristic potential. It is ok for other nation to know about the poverty and want to help, but when it is the only thing being shown it's not ok. Plus, I am an Haitian living in the US and I always get a slight hesitation from people when they ask me where I'm from and I respond Haiti... I don't wanna say too much, just hoping you understand

There's poverty in every country in the world! We Haitians, we have so many countries against us because we are the first black country that said no to slavery! We contributed so much to the success of the US in so many ways. A Haitian man discovered Chicago. We helped the US fight the Revolutionary War! I can go on and on! And I know the Dominican Government spend lot of money In hospital and education for Haitians living in Dr, but the big Problem is not the Haitian people The big problem are the corrupts Dominican and Haitian governments in both sides. The Dominican army guys taking Money from people to let them Cross the border also taking money from Chinese people to Come to live in Dominican, that is Not new , that happens for years. Malditos gobiernos corruptos. I hope that the Haitians find the Way to have better life, they deserve because they are human been. Haiti is such a beautiful country! It has a beauty that America doesn't understand! I've been to Haiti several times 4 missions and plan to move there. I have always said that Haitians have a beauty and a joy that I never seen. The way they can praise God in the heat, while hungry (n church is like 5 hours!) with their kids (no kid's church) is amazing! They have so little and are so happy! Thanx 4 sharing-Esp the history, I learned ALOT! I loved seeing the taptaps! Bondye beni ou! :-D

The media portrays Africa the same way, as slums, dirty, and uneducated. Very sad. I'm from North Africa and would love to visit Haiti.

Sigh. 😪 I see #Haiti like other #Caribbean islands have a lot in common with #PuertoRico 🇵🇷 We too, have been on the front lines fighting brutality & genocide of #Colonization & #SystemicRacismSexism since the U.S. overthrew our govt in 1898. #PuertoRico 🇵🇷 is the only place where the Spanish-American War was NOT fought.. yet, we R the only place still not independent, not free from Colonialism & all that entails. 💀 Like #Haiti & most of the other #Carib islands.. Our people R #Native #African AND then some kind of #European (Mostly from quite a few European countries cuz of colonialism & the effects of #Slavery & #Racial #Segregation by an #AngloCulture steeped in a horrid #Apartheid #System 😐) that is still here even in 2021. After all, the #Jan6th coup attempt was instigated by a twice impeached U.S. President. 😐 That's a sad 'First' in #America but why haven't these people been brought to #Justice ?! Wow. #Amerikkka is back promoting its own evil delusions, but this time.. #America needs to stand up for those victimized by racist political voids & ahe truly needs to be a full supporter to the #Caribbean cuz we R the wind beneath #America's ideals. We R constantly pushing the U.S. to keep reaching towards the good built into the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, the #Voters' Act of 1965 & other ideals that the U.S. has not fully embraced, but must. #WeThePeople hope everyone will be an #AntiRacist & #EndTheMadness of #SystemicRacismSexism since it's a fatal condition for #America if we don't. We must yank the plug on #Amerikkka & #Amerikkkans .. The world is ROUND PEOPLE AND SUPER DIVERSE, COLORFUL & AWESOMELY BEAUTIFUL. 😍 Besides, racial/racists ppl R so '#20thCentury' & extremely ignorant as hell. #THINK #America #THINK .. make a CHANGE cuz it's long overdue. #PuertoRico 🇵🇷 #Haiti #Cuba & others need #America to be better, smarter & much more accountable. The world is watching. We R an #America that is much stronger, much more diverse & literate than any generation b4 us. #YesWeCan / #SìSePuede 💖🌈🎆 #Vote #Americans #Vote 💙☑🌈 #ThankYou #Americans & #Caribbeans 💯% 💖🎆💙 Forward. 👍🏾

FROM FRANCE, SPAIN AND WE CAN ALSO SAY ENGLAND AND THE AMERICANS BECAUSE THEY INVADED HAITI MANY TIMES AFTER WE BECAME AN INDEPENDENT NATION. BUT WE ALWAYS FIGHT BACK; THAT'S WHY WE HAVE PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA, DR. M. L. KING, PRESIDENT OBAMA... MR. FREDERICK DOUGLASS WOULD HAVE TELL YOU THE SAME THING...

All of you guys need to understand that Haiti is not POOR. We just don't know or too lazy to bring out our richness for others to see like many other islands are doing...And just because Port-au-Prince is broken that doesn't mean the other parts are...Haiti is RICH!!!

+Leeth Ambroise Now you are just full of sh!t, Haiti has went through so many storms, and earthquakes, demonizing, racism, and other countries trying to make them pay for standing their grounds everyone knows what time it is? Its just haters want to see Haiti fail, like the racists they had to run out of their countrie!

Is all you can say they eat mud cakes at least go on the Internet and look up some things to use instead of being a repetitive lowlife internet troll. This is a sad way you people get attention I love America and Haiti and when you are poor you eat what you can. People in America eat garbage and other humans and more. Both countries are not the best but we both know Haiti is beautiful even though you don't want to admit it.
