That’s fairly obvious. If it doesn’t have side effecrs it likely has no effects at all. If it does something bad; there is likely a disease state where that bad is good. If you are healthy you don’t want to eat random abortifacients, vaso-dialators and analgesics.

When something has evolved to produce a molecule as a toxin (rather than that molecule just happening to be poisonous), it's usually because that molecule is highly potent, and potency often comes from being specific - say a toxin jams a vital cardiac neurotransmitter and nothing else, that means the plant or fungus or whatever doesn't have to produce very much of it and can spend more energy on growing and reproducing instead. Potency and specificity are also exactly the properties that we look for when investigating new medicines, so if someone has a disease that's caused by overexcited cardiac nerves, a finely-tuned dose of this hypothetical toxin could be (quite literally) just what the doctor ordered.

Actually the dancing plague is predominantly contributed to mass histaria though some of the initial victims may have consumed it. The Salem witch trials are solely believed to be caused by ergot and religious beliefs.

@@SungazerDNB How is it contradictory when scientists have yet to 100% solve it. We don't know what happened, this is just the most widely accepted theory. Since the cause of the dancing plague, which occurred primarily between the 14th and 17th centuries, is still unknown. We will never or probably never will learn the exact cause of it, it's believed to have been caused by ergot. But since we weren't there and don't have access to their exact grain storage we probably will never know for certain.

People often insist that you have to do something, or that you can't just do nothing, but careful observation is doing something - often something better for the patient than mixing a cocktail in the patient. My friend - sufferer for many years here. HIGHLY recommend you stay away from ropinirole or any of the dopamine agonists. Some do well with gabapentin - personally my cure has been a combination of pregabalin and dipyridamole. Total remission for the last 8 months, and I had previously had it in both my arms and legs. Please try to find a neurologist who specializes in RLS. Have a good one in NC if you need.

A minor point, but the LSD abbreviation is from the German name - Lysergsäure-diethylamid Lyserg Saure Diethylamid. The "S" is for Saure, which is German for acid. This is similar to the use of EKG (the kardio is German, but it is ECG in English - ElectroCardioGram). Thank you for the great summary of the medicinal aspects of ergot of rye uses. .

@@DeltaNovum Yes, LAD would be the English initialism. I suppose the German initialism was used because the research had been dominated by German language research publications. We become accustomed to the rest of the world adopting things from English and seem to take it for granted that English SHOULD dominate terminology. Until the 1930s, German was very important for understanding science, but the newly appointed leader of Germany decided that ideology was more important than science. The same thing happened in the Soviet Union, with the top geneticists being sent to the Gulag and large numbers of Soviet citizens starving because the ideologically pure farming methods did NOT work. .

It's so frustratingly slow sometimes. The effect on Alzheimer's has been known for decades, but researchers have to deal with bureaucracy and funding issues so it's advanced very slowly. I remember reading in the 90s about the positive effects on Alzheimer patients who took morning glory or Woodrose seeds which are packed with LSA. Another frustratingly slow advancement is gut microbe transplants. Even though it's been shown to treat a myriad of neurological and mental disorders, It's basically impossible to get one unless you have a very specific stomach issue. It sucks to know there's a potential cure which doctors won't even consider purely due to bureaucracy or lack of interest 😕

Did some Woodrose extract back in the day, less intense, a bit sedative and euphoric. The body load is higher though and unless properly extracted, causes gastric issues which may distract from the enjoyment.

In my family, the rumor is that when my grandma was going through breast cancer treatments (in the 1980s), the youngest daughter slipped in some weed brownies into grandma's routine. Anyways, the family caught wind of it, and pushed for a restraining order, which got the cops involved, and my aunt ended up spending a couple nights in jail. Just saying, you shouldn't just lace something for someone if you don't have their consent. Though, if I were in my twilight years, I would have less of a reason to say no to trippy experiences. Hopefully things go well for you though.

There was a theory....I don't know if it's been debunked or not, but it is fascinating....Some scientists speculated that the Salem witch trials actually started due to an ergot scourge in the rye crops during that time. The psychotropic effects would have been disturbing to observe, for sure, let alone experience....especially since they would not have experienced anything like it.

Ergonovine was indeed used by those who attended births to control bleeding since long before the days of Cotton Mather, who used those who knew how it was to be used to condemn someone (usually a woman) for being a witch. But ergonovine, from a fungal growth known as 'corn smut', is not the only herb or substance known to control bleeding as well as induce miscarriages. As a Folklore student, I once did research on just what those substances and herbs were that were known in literature from the Middle Ages. There were at least 12. Next, in research done in modern times (19th or 20th century), did those substances actually work? Short answer - Yes. Thirdly, how available are those same substances/herbs in markets in the USA today? Answer - All but ergonovine.

I've discovered for myself that I can often interrupt an oncoming migraine by some brief but intense cardio (running up & down stairs usually). I guess this also works via an increase in blood pressure. It rarely gets rid of the associated headache, but it is almost always less intense and prevents auras.

Psychedelics are extremely powerful for neuroplasticity. This can also be a bad thing, if you get a traumatic trip it is extremely intense and can change you and make you more anxious.

Hey dude! Im happy you made it back onto this channel so quickly after your bad news a while back. I have Multiple sclerosis. Diagnosed in April of 2021 but look to have had it for possibly 20 years. I was introduced to Lion's Mane Mushrooms at the end of 2022. And the research into this mushrooms capability to repair nerve damage in the brain. Also Psilocybe research is showing repair to the myelin sheath. A few years ago, there was a patent filed for a 'Stack' that includes both these fungi and Niacin. This patent came with a $6 million to research this potential wonder. Both of these fungi, I have been consuming and noticed an incredible change. My neurologist is trying not to get excited about this research, but she wasnt apposed to me trying this out on my own. Turkey Tail Mushrooms are another incredible fungi. This fungi is showing it can prevent and even cure cancers. All the fungi I have listed have been showing potential in preventing and curing cancers. I wanted to mention this to you when you announced your bad news, but you had asked us not to overwhelm you with other possible treatments. Something for you and your viewers to think about.

Just an FYI, the "S' in LSD stands for "Saure" which is apparently Swiss/German for "acid" ala "Sauerkraut". It is not the "s" in Lysergic.

psilocin and LSD at non-hallucinogenic doses are basically the only direct Serotonin analogues that cross the blood-brain barrier and have a limited affinity to just the target receptors (of course there's a tiny affinity for dopamine receptors for LSD). There is literally no reason to continue using other indirect and overly sticky pharmaceuticals which without exception have worse and more common side-effects at the effective dose for depression and anxiety when 5HT is considered the main issue.

Use might go even further back than that. For about 1000 years from the 15th century BCE to the 4th CE the Eleusinian mysteries cult in worship of Demeter were said to induce ego death through the use of a tightly held psychedelic concoction in a yearly festival. It's not 100% known that ergot was used in this mixture, but the worship in question was of Demeter, goddess of fertility, the spring, and grain and ergot grows pretty much wherever wheat does. What is known from primary sources is that most great thinkers from Greece, Egypt, Rome, and others attended the festival and attributed great wisdom gained from the experience.

it is thought that the Ancient Greek cult of Demeter (The Elusinian Mystery Cult) drank a mixture of pounded grain with wine or water as part of the initiation rituals. considering how common ergot poisoning was back then, you can imagine that the innitiates of this cult might be undergoing hallucinatory and convulsive effects during the rituals and this could easily be seen as divine intervention. I personally like the idea that hallucinatory fungus played a role in these ancient mystery cults and possibly played a role in influencing peoples perception of gods and the divine.

Haven't we gone this exact route with Aduconumab already? And concluded that reducing the biomarkers (beta amyloids and Tau) is not treating the disease, just hiding is symptoms? I mean, it works to reduce the markers, but does nothing to improve the patient or delay the progression... Cheers

I literally used to eat these when I was a kid in Oregon. I used to hike along powerline roads up near Mckenzie Bridge and would find these on old grasses, probably in the early fall season. They had a nutty texture and not really any taste.

Ergot can grow in Wheat as well. I remember seeing an article regarding ergot poisoning being mistaken as the plague way back because of some similar symptoms.

So.... 30 years ago, I started getting full arm sleeves and a back piece tattoo and pretty much had one portion or another healing at any given time. I did a lot of LSD around that area too (not like every day, but like once every month or two). I noticed that when I did acid the day of or after getting tattooed, the heal time would be nearly cut in half, with some not even coming remotely close to scabbing. Since we're on the subject of healing properties of ergot, was just wondering if any other tattooed nerds noticed anything similar.

Ergotamin is a common migraine medicine with only two drawbacks: it is cheap and it is not patented nor patentable. Because of those two disadvantages it is hardly at all marketed

Usually by making sure the ergot fungus doesn't grow in the first place. This can be done either with petroleum-based fungicides, or with organic fungus-killers. The harvested grain can also be treated with chemicals after harvest, to make it sure ergot is not present.

If you get a huge ammount of ergot, you could always aerobically ferment it with sugar, water, citric or tartaric acid, yeast, and enough chlorophyll to produce enough diethylamine to attach to the ergotamine/lsa.... I think the yeast should probably break down the more toxic ergot compounds, and GC/MS should confirm this. Then, just extract with some non polar solvent, and evaporate in a sealed, cold, anaerobic environment.... Should yield lots of good LSD

I remember reading a research article maybe 7 or 8 years ago about how autopsies of patients with AD revealed various kinds of fungi in various parts of the brain. I don't know if there's been much follow up research on that but it would be interesting if there's a fungal component behind the etiology of AD and a fungal component for the treatment of AD.

as a chemist, if i had to reinvent a maximum amount of modern medicines starting from just one parent compound it'd definitely be an ergot alkaloid. there's just so much variety and vesatility in derivates of that basic structure that nothing else comes close. serotonin receptor a(nta)gonists √, dopamine receptor a(nta)gonists √, antiinflammatory √, vasodilator/-constrictor √, antidepressant √, etc etc

I noticed there was no mention of the Dancing Plagues and the Salem Witch Trial, which I think was for good because there isn't really substansive proof of ergot being involved with any of them, and specifically the Salem case, which was very throughly documented for the time, makes no mention of any symptoms of ergotism, which you would think they would when talking about how people had been cursed by witches. The Salem theory sounds like something some neo-pagan came up while on some good old Orange Sunshine and half remembering what his dealer friend told about where Lysergic Acid comes from.

You are LSD-phobic but here's a story: my doctor Dad caught me tripping on LSD when l was 17 and said under his breath 'l never thought you'd be so stupid.' Dad was an alcohol man, strictly. l have continued hallucinogen use from 16 to 68. Dry spells, wetter spells, but l still will drop acid and will still eat psilocybe. When Dad was half way into Alzheimer's and had forgotten who l was, l might have used the same line on him, in an entirely different context. My brother David, 3 years older than me, died last March from FTD. Bruce Willis. Mummum never tripped, Dad never tripped, Mom never tripped and l don't know about David. l have, it's ergot-related, and l don't think l have dementia. They did.
