@Angelica Hamilton Thomas Jefferson had a slave named Sally Hemmings who, was said, to have been raped by him. Some people said they had consensual sex but I don't believe it, especially since she was a slave and therefore couldn't say no.
@clutter4
@clutter4 5 жыл бұрын
@@chaoticbliss4169 I heard it was still a mystery, but keep in mind Jefferson's wife, Martha, had passed when Sally Hemings gave birth to her first child at 17, why is that important? Sally was Martha's half-sister, they shared the same father. Also, Sally went with Jefferson and his daughter to paris, there she was a free woman, she had the option to stay in paris no longer being a slave, maybe staying with Jefferson and his family helped them both cope with the death of Martha. But hey, no one seems to care that Peggy married her cousin.

@@clutter4 While I do see your point, there could still be the possibility that she went back with him because she has grown accustomed with her slave life. It's most likely all she knew so while freedom was a tempting she couldn't take it because she didn't know how to live a free life.

So with every cabinet battle the music and their voices sound darker and more serious, like the tension between these men has gone through the roof and the responsability of running a nation is finally hitting them, like King George said: "Do you know how hard it is to lead?" and "It's much harder when it's all your call"... Madison finally remembered how to speak. This is the darkest song in Hamilton.
@abigailfuentes7673
@abigailfuentes7673 5 жыл бұрын
For those confused about where this would take place in the soundtrack (had it been kept in) , this song most likely takes place after "The Reynolds Pamphlet" but obviously before "The World Was Wide Enough". George Washington wouldn't have known about Hamilton's affair beforehand because Hamilton had only confided in Burr, Jefferson, and Madison in "We Know". Hamilton must've published the pamphlet and THEN this song would be sandwiched between that and "The World Was Wide Enough".
@OJMorgan55
@OJMorgan55 5 жыл бұрын
But since Washington is president it has to be before "One Last Time". The only way I see it working would be a having the "we know" scene happen just after "Washington on your side". The Reynolds Pamphlet was in 1797, the same year Washington stepped down. So you'd have to have Washington find out before. This would cause bad pacing with cabinet battles 2 and 3 being too close together, so I can see why it's not in the show.

Idk when this took place but I'm guessing after the Reynolds Pamphlet from that mistress line (which wouldn't really make sense) But this song really shows Hamiltons fall from grace cause both Jefferson and Madison are both trying to solve the problem at hand while Hamilton is just throwing around pointless insults. (I know thats kinda the point of these since there rap battles but still)

When you think about it, this song makes no sense chronologically. It would have to be before "One Last Time" for Washington to be in power, but after "We Know" for Madison and Jefferson to have knowledge of Hamilton's affair

it's after "we know" because at the end, when madison and jefferson ask "do you really wanna have this conversation?" regarding mistresses, the single reason hamilton says no is because he knows that they know about maria reynolds, aka HIS own mistress

Wait- jefferson would've been around 65 years old in 1808 and 57 when he was elected president, which i don't know why i find it surprising because franklin pierce was 47 which was considered young for a president-

Hamilton ultimately lost this because, well, he didn't actually have a solution. All he did was insult Jefferson, which I think is kinda interesting because out of all of them Jefferson is the only that actually tried to legislate a (partial) ban on slavery. What I find even more interesting is how none of them appear to want to keep slavery around they just can't figure out a way to dismantle it without risking the nation being torn in two.

The one thing I don't get is that, at least in the musical's version of the timeline, the Reynolds Pamphlet wasn't released until AFTER Washington stepped down and retired, so the whole "do you really want to talk about mistresses?" line doesn't make sense. Sure, Jefferson and Madison were told by Hamilton that he had an affair, but that was only after he had already been fired by Adams, meaning neither Washington OR Hamilton would be involved in this political discussion because neither of them work there anymore! Anyone know why this was cut/unfinished? Is this because it messed with the established timeline?
@croi5613
@croi5613 4 жыл бұрын
i think its an error with the lyrics and it shouldve been madison's part, therefore it could take place right after "we know" and before "hurricane". As well the reynolds pamphlet was released the same year of washington's resignation, and "one last time" being too close to cabinet battle #2, i can see why lin didnt put this in
@russotusso1695
@russotusso1695 4 жыл бұрын
Bit of creative thinking, some people knew about affairs before the pamphlet actually, so throw in bit of thinking and you can say that Washington learned about it himself.

fun fact: technically, the quaker delegation *never* got what it wanted, because Slavery was never "abolished in all it's forns" as the US still has the right to use slavery as a punishment for crimes.

Bit of creative work, Washington was still part of US government when Pamphlet was released. In addition, people were already starting to learn about affair even before that, wouldn't be suprisng if even Washington knew.
