Atwood's weaving together of threads to create context was the weakest part of the novel. Assuming the alternate world of THT splits off from history sometime in the early 80's, so much would have to happen in a short period to create the world of Gilead. That is especially true for the ecological aspects. As for genre, science fiction is not Atwood's strengths. Her book "Oryx and Crake" had laughable names and narrative.
