Serena is a pure evil. She helped her husband to build this world where she (and only few other women) would be on top, so she was absolutely fine with the fact that others would serve her, be raped so she could have a baby. She experienced betrayal from her husband, had her finger cut and realized that Gilead doesn't care about her either (surprise!), but even now she works for Gilead and wants Nicole back just because it makes her happy. She acts like a selfish kid and I can't feel sorry for her anymore. She had a chance to choose a side, she made her choice and doesn't deserve to be saved.

I watched this with my wife (she’s a therapist) & she wanted to rip her hair out of her head. Serena is absolutely crazy, what june said in later episodes “you built this whole place just so you wouldn’t be alone” is so true! Serena oppressed thousands of women by enabling their rape & their forced births , just so that she can have a child. Newsflash as harsh as it sounds but no one is responsible for your birth struggles, women don’t owe you anything, not even if you force them to give birth to a child that you want to steal.

Serena doesn’t actually love this baby, she loves the commodification of the baby. What if the baby grew up to look like June and have some of her traits as a teenager? Would she love her then? She didn’t think this through

This scene makes me angry. It makes me realise just how delusional serena really is. As if that child is going to want to remember her? Then that "I protected your wife" line as a what, a threat it sounded like? Then the ever frustrating line "is there anything you want me to tell your wife?" as if for one she would actually pass anything on to june and two, why are you making sound like his wife and yourself are just going on a trip or out for dinner. She's being held hostage! Also, why didn't luke ask about Hannah?

He definitely wanted to but it would have been way too risky because he realizes he was speaking to the woman who helped create a society that justifies religious fanaticism and rape . Serena already has enough leverage with having June as her Handmaid and asking about Hannah would give her more than enough leverage as Hannah in this situation is also a hostage

I think what bothers me the most about this scene is that Luke doesn’t mention Hannah. He never once asks about her or where she is. He only mentions June. When she’s talking about her love for nichole why wouldn’t he say, “yeah, I love my daughter Hannah too.”

Serena forgets all about Holly/Nicole when she finds out she’s pregnant. She doesn’t love Holly, she loves the idea of a baby. She’s absolutely obsessed with motherhood and has helped created Gilead to become a mother and has the audacity to present herself as innocent. She has not given birth to Holly, donated her eggs to make her, raised her with love (Luke and Moira are doing that). She is not Holly’s mother. She even has the audacity to blackmail Luke by using the love he has for June to let her hold the baby. And yes Luke is not her biological father, but she’s right it’s about love. He’s raising her and loving her because she’s his wife’s child and it’s what she would want.

Serena is such a great character in this Story. She reminds me of Cersei from GoT. I love Serena so much. She isn't just evil like Fred. She is much more. She is a smart, clever, evil and at the same time she is an emotional, empathetic, and courages Woman. I really do believe that she regrets having helped with the development of Gilead. I guess that she imagined something else while helping in the development of Gilead. She would be such a great and strong mother. Yes, I know she is evil. I know she did so many false Things but she also did and still does good Things. She isn't just evil. I just think that she Needs to get rid off Fred. He is just a border and I really do believe that there is a man who could love and protect much better than Fred ever did. Edit: Yvonne is such a marvelous actress, so elegant and Pretty. Love her.

I would agree that she’s a complicated character, but Cersei is so much more likeable than Serena Joy. They’re both malicious blonde women in positions of power, but at least Cersei was never brainwashed into allowing for her own repression. She fought it all of the way through. As a woman, I can sympathize more with a woman who commits atrocities for her own power than a woman who commits atrocities for someone else’s power and her own subjugation. Cersei is fun to watch. Serena just makes me furious.

@@AxelBain I hate to break it to you... But it has happened to probably millions of women in cults. And not always to terrible women either. It's very much a form of extreme brainwashing. Even though she is complicit in what happens, she is also concurrently a victim of the system. That's what interesting about her. She does terrible things but is still extremely brainwashed through shame, abuse and control to behave a certain way. And she is coerced and manipulated to enforce the status quo of the cult, even though it comes at the cost of her own freedom and betraying other women. A cult usually starts out trying to be a utopia. For a religious cult, people who want to live more in line with what they view as the righteous way. People get drawn in because they believe they're making a better version of society. It often also pulls in people who are lonely and vulnerable and idealistic. And there's often a charismatic leader/s after a power trip. Women in these cult situations are conditioned to be their own enforcers and to subjugate one another. They are praised and allowed scraps of power as long as they behave the way the cult dictates. As soon as they rebel they are usually swiftly and viciously punished and shamed by both the men and the women. Gilead is an extreme example. Women who rebel are exiled, tortured or executed. Should also be noted that in these type of religious cults being married and having a lot of children is basically treated as the pinnacle of a woman's life. That is basically all women CAN do, outside of chores and being a housewive. They're cut off from the outside world. They can't get a proper education. They can't get a normal job. They can't become leaders. They usually can't even choose who they're married to and could be the 16th wife of a man. So that goes a bit of the way to explain why Serena is so ridiculously obsessed with having a child. It is easier for her to ignore the reality of the society she is in because she is one of the few women with a scrap of power. It benefits her greatly to uphold the system and to be cruel and inhumane to the women beneath her if it means she can save herself and get what she believes she needs to be complete (a child). She can even perhaps justify it in the beginning as right and doesn't acknowledge reality. Or that she is a victim too. Of course she does figure out slowly that Gilead actually sucks (of what I've seen of the show so far). But that is contending with her brainwashing and her cruel, selfish desires.

Cersei is soooo much more fun than Serena. I’ve never wanted to scream at Cersei over shit she pulled. She’s more of a magnificent bastard politicking, but Serena is just enabling an authoritarian dictatorship and is a literal rapist. As a Scott, there’s always frustration from me and the rest of my family from a lack of accountability. We always say “made your bed, sleep in it” and Serena’s concern to have a child in NO way justifies helping to orchestrate the murders of hundreds of thousands of innocent people, the mass rapes of thousands as well, the enslavement of the female sex, e.t.c. She has to deal with the consequences of her actions. She couldn’t be a mother so she helped create a system where she could, one that oppressed and kills thousands if not millions of people. And then when a sane world says, “yeah, no, you should not be a mother” she gets upset, even though the only claim she has to the child is an oppressive dictatorship she helped create? Made your bed, sleep in it.
