The thing is, Luke does not understand. He does not understand that June has "other options". He has been living in safety for the last 8 years. Of course, his trauma is also important but it is nowhere close to what June has experienced. For him its still, black and white. He loves Junes, he wants her to be happy. And he knows that if Fred is being released, the only way for her to move on in his mind, is for her to let go. In his eyes, he sees the motivation for her to let go. Him and Nicole. But as we found out this episode, June is way beyond this by this point.

They ruined the show with this ending. It would have been a perfecly good and satisfactory season ending with Fred being sent back to Gilead and to have him on trial by the same laws he created. He would have ended up in colonies or executed anyway. The terror he felt when they sent him back to gilead just sums it up, he knew what was awaiting him, and thats exectly the terror June wanted him to feel. This way they made Fred a victim and a martyr, having him torn to pieces without trial by angry mob. Thats no justice, thats revenge which is opposite of justice. He never did anything to any of them except June. They were just wreaking revenge on him like he's some personification of Gilead and all the bad that happened to them all. And whats more they did it exactly like Gilead trained them, like angry mob. The women dealt no justice, they just became what they fought against. So i guess the point is you can escape from Gilead but it can never escape from you. It was really sickening to watch it, i cant believe anybody found that satisfying. Not to mention that the whole arangement made zero sense. Like Gilead would let like 25 women go in exchange for Fred. Its not like its just lawrence's choice. Especially with him barely avoiding execution himself. And like anybody would let like 50 women cross into no mans land and like Gilead wouldnt immediately capture them all. And like Nick could even arrange to bring a prissoner into no mans land even of he is a comander when Fred's being held in custody by like 20 eyes.

2 countries that have very different values and are at the verge of war usually need a space that's considered a No Man's Land (even N.Korea and S.Korea has one afaik) for negotiation talk or to do trades. Fred going to Geneva isn't benefitting Canada, he was supposed to go because Fred wanted protection, a pardon and to start somewhere fresh in exchange for giving up the info on Gilead.
