You’re nailing the positioning and commitment for those hang 10’s!! So good to see, really like how considered you are on the wave also in looking for the right section, bringing in a lot of subtle corrections to alter your speed and position on the wave, looks epic, yewww!! 🤙🤙

Hanging 10 into closeout sections was also very helpful for me. Full commitment in steep sections like that really helps progress. Something else that I spent some time on is working on cross stepping quickly and smoothly back to the tail. Once you get that down, you can quickly get back to the tail and straighten out to make a lot more waves.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it really helps. Doesn't help with finishing waves, but if it's noseriding you're working on then it's great. Cross stepping back is something I havent put much effort into so I'll start working on it soon for sure.

@@LongboardSessions once I put a little time into it I was surprised how many of those closeout noseride sections I was actually able to recover and ride out of. I still have a lot of work to do, but it definitely helped. Keep up the great work man, I love all of the drills and tips you come up with. There are so many little nuances with longboarding. The pros make it look so easy and I love how you break down each little thing into a separate video. Lots of helpful stuff on your channel!

Just a quick Thankyou for sharing Ben’s wisdom on this video and another great edit from you. Used this last week and can say it was a game changer. Thanks for the fantastic tutorial. Seems a bit more of mental advice than technical. I use the term "over surfing" to describe trying to do a maneuver that the wave just can't support. Hard bottom turns or big cut backs on slow mushy waves and I hang a rail or sink half way thru. Off the tops when there's no top to go off of are doomed to failure. It's a bit difficult to picture hanging 5 or 10 as a maneuver some times. Maybe because the board doesn't change direction. Or because it's executed slowly compared to other maneuvers. But this video shows clearly that attempting a nose ride on a wave with out a pocket or too far from the pocket is over surfing and doomed to failure as well.
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 жыл бұрын
Over surfing is a great term! Exactly... I see it all the time.. and also I'm guilty of it myself. Trying to force a turn while moving too slowly.. common mistake!

Enjoying your channel very much. Particularly the glimpse into your surfing lifestyle and routine. Some personal thoughts based on many decades of surfing etc. - most of those longboarding. These are all things I have to remind myself of at times. Hopefully some of these may be of use to someone. Take more, small, narrow steps. Try and do 8 steps to get to the nose as an exercise. Your last 2 steps are pretty big ones, particularly your last. Large steps leave you unbalanced, the large weight shifts disturb the boards trim and its difficult to maintain an upright upper body posture. Check out Alex Knosts little pitter patter. :) Try and keep a narrower, upright stance so that weight shifts are more subtle. This will mean you have to move around the board a lot more with small steps to shift weight. Posture - try and keep an upright upper body and head posture. Centre of gravity/balance comes from raising and lowering from the knees vertically up and down. Dropping the centre of gravity (naval) just a few inches is often all thats needed to correct balance. Think vertically up and down for balance rather than counter leaning. If you lose balance try dropping vertically to the board, still fairly upright in the upper body. Arms - Try and keep your front arm very close to your side. The back arm can be used to direct weight towards the tail when needed or hung over the lip line to apply a bit more weight to your toes. Think of it as a counterweight more than a balancing aid. Dropping vertically is more effective for balance correction. Stay composed, but loose and relaxed. Soft in the hips and knees/ankles. Don't fight or react to unexpected bumps - try and flow with them. Also I think if you want to create a good style it may be best to adopt a relaxed/less is more approach. I understand wanting to practice the individual component parts of longboarding, but putting them together intuitively to suit the wave you're riding is ultimately what its all about. Often just slowing down and cruising a bit puts the board naturally where it should be on the wave anyway. Imitation - watch your favourite riders and imitate. Have that in your head when you are surfing. Much like playing music, you become a collection of what you imitate and practice but your own unique version of it. Aloha

@@LongboardSessions Thanks. You are welcome. I hope there are some things of use in there. Your previous tip of facing forward is a great one. I always suggest that to people struggling with cross stepping. Its particularly important backhand. Another thing to get comfortable doing is to ride completely in parallel stance facing forward. If you watch the old Bruce Brown movies you often see guys going fully parallel when they need to adopt a stable position through whitewater etc. Cheers

Water definitely doesn’t need to start from nose. Sometimes ten over and a meter high off the water . The back of the board has water over it plus the tail lift at the back works like flaps off an air craft. Some board work without much water over the tail allowing for faster noseriding. Your board is going to be slow on the nose stable and easy with lots of lift due to square wide tail. Putting a grip pad right at the back with a kick helps especially if faster flatter tail design but ultimately slows you down which is normally what you want as it is a stall. I would say 5 over no problem learn to bend knees deep , hip way back. drag hand in water as you slightly till upwards then spring to 10 and back(basically cheater 5 to 10 to cheater 5 will yield results in most waves) the opportunity will open up on almost any wave . Even a tiny onshore choppy pop slop with a second to get Forward and back I promise you
