So I don't normally like to amend videos, but my boyfriend and I are replaying MGS2 right now, and I realized that my idea of the swedish voice hacking into the game to try to break the brainwashing spell, which causes the game to respond by crashing, is almost exactly what happens when Raiden makes it into Arsenal Gear. Emma's worm cluster causes GW to start malfunctioning, and so the AI responds by telling you, the player, to turn off the console and get a life. Pretty neat, and makes me a lot more confident in my interpretation.

(Downpour was also under-rated, but definitely did deserve some criticism -- the monster designs are... not great, for one, and there's definitely some tone issues, but it's overall pretty good. Book of Memories is also really fun, but absolutely deserves the "not in the vein of Silent Hill" label -- it's deeply weird as a Silent Hill game, even if it's a pretty neat action-RPG dungeon crawl)

Especially the way that it could have retroactively made Silent Hill 2 a better game. The biggest problem with SH2, imo, is the fact that the story barely holds up when taken literally rather than metaphorically. Expanding out the idea that James and the other characters in SH2 were manipulated into doing the things that birthed their guilt would add to the horror around the cult, and make SH2 fit into the SH lore even better.

@ashy Konami has the rights to Silent Hill as an IP. I think the point being made is Kojima can’t make a Silent Hill game and remaking the concept with different names to circumvent copyright through “plausible deniability” would make it look cheap, hence why we won’t be getting anything that is vaguely like Silent Hills ever. The best he can do is make up a completely different project that includes Ito and del Toro in the creative process. The only thing we can ever wish for is Kojima making a project that has them involved and supersedes the potential that PT/Silent Hills ever had.

Just a quick theory to add into your confusion regarding the “I walked till I stood one pace before Jack”, I’ve seen some theories suggest that it’s a reference to a deck of cards, counting Ace - 10, just before Jack, the first of the face cards, and they also may have placed the desk with the phone and Jack’s photo right next to it intentionally!- but it would explain the clue referencing Jack while still not making it crucial to walk specifically to him. Walking 10 steps is always one step before Jack.

The "corner of your eye" effect could be the work of a flicker effect on the flashlight, or could have something to do with the fact that the Lisa model is actually following around behind you when she isn't manifesting. That's something dataminers had found. The way the game renders light and shadow might be affected by that character model.

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time trying to glitch hunt in this game (very casually, I'm not like, an expert or anything), and the only things I've ever found are various lighting glitches. The light is done very well in the game, but it still messes up occasionally. (My greatest achievement was triggering a light glitch that would light up the entire front door momentarily by running into it at the very edge of the corner of it.)

@27:20; I think the line from the fetus saying the only reason the mother could get that job was "because the manager like how she looked in a skirt" and then following it up with the "exactly 10 months back" is meant to imply that the fetus' father was the manager after he used the threat of firing her to get her to sleep with him (since her husband was wallowing in his own self pity drinking, she had to carry that burden alone and knew how much they needed the money). Edit: all of this still alludes to the real life aspect of Kojimas perspective. replace manager with Konami management, the wife with the influential IP Kojima created at Konami, and schlocky games that would then result from those business practices with the demonic fetus in the sink, meanwhile Kojima is watching powerlessly as his brain children were being bastardized for the sake of profit, im sure the thought of "killing" his creations crossed his mind, but he instead chose to make PT instead and take his creative talents elsewhere and create homolumos

I'm guessing 'Jack' as a pseudonym probably has several purposes: 1: an allusion to 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy', in reference to Konami's obsession with the business side of the industry, Kojima's loss of creative freedom and because of its use in 'The Shining' 2: Raiden from Metal Gear goes by that name, so it would be plausible that the teaser could have been part of that series. 3: similar to the above it could be in reference to the player 'jacking in' to the game through their playable avatar. It's interesting that you think of the game being about convincing the player to become a killer, as simulations of violence through videogames and general media manipulation being used by people in power to incite people to become soldiers is a theme present in Metal Gear. Given the political content of Kojima's work I would also think that the murder audio being played in tandem with the radio announcer inciting the incident, and the other allusions to aliens manipulating the media, one might infer that the 'Aliens' could be a reference to They Live (Kojima being a big John Carpenter fan, as evidenced by Solid Snake basically being a reference to Snake Plisken from Escape From New York). That scene could also therefore be interpreted as a revolutionary call to action against capitalism as a system.

Let me tell you that every time I left my bedroom to go down the hall to the bathroom in the middle of the night and all I could think about was Lisa rushing me for years. YEARS. 🤣 It's funny now, but the visceral feelings from this game lingered for so long afterwards. I don't think we'll ever quite get the level of psychological, abstract horror ever again. Ragnarox had the best theory, that this game was based on the MK Ultra experiments conducted by the CIA. He makes extremely compelling arguments including that fact that Kojima was fascinated by Cold War conspiracies. The fact that the numbers activated the father to kill the family, the fact that the tally marks on the walls on the walls of the room he wakes up in indicate he was locked in isolation which MK ultra subjects were supposedly subjected to, the multiple hallucinogenic visuals in the game, as MK ultra subjects were reportedly given LSD in order to create an alternate personality which explains the quote, "The only me is me, are you sure the only you is you?"

Something I realized after I watched this whole video is how this game is like a Ghost in and of itself. It's this odd anomaly that seems to work perfectly as it was intended in order to scare the player. Bugless, glitchless, and everything that could be considered either of those two things just add to the experience rather than take away from it. It's almost as if no human could have possibly made this thing. Like a ghost, It's almost impossible to understand fully, and we likely will never get that chance. It instead will forever remain as a memory, forcing us to constantly question our own sanity and recollection of events. I'm a very cynical and rational guy, I don't believe in ghosts, bigfoot, the loch ness monster, or any of that. But for a brief moment, I thought about this game and how impossibly immaculate it is with what it does and actually considered the possibility that the paranormal might just exist in our world. The genius and flawlessness of this game is so apparent that it's hard to believe human beings were able to accomplish it. It's truly otherworldly. It should not exist, but somehow it does.

I never got to play PT but played the first two Silent Hill games back in the day and have always been haunted by them. Every so often I go through a phase where I want to watch videos about Silent Hill or similar games or movies. It was in one of those phases I first learned about PT, which haunted me as much as the games I actually played. I have circled back to videos about PT multiple times and have gotten so much out of them, but I've also wondered what exactly I've been looking for. Well, I think I found it here. This is such a masterful analysis. I appreciate all you did to play and experience the game yourself and understand its meaning; your efforts really paid off. I have seen other analyses that discuss what Kojima was going through at the time this was made and analyses that explore who the protagonist is and what is happening in the game, but I've never seen them woven together like this or in a way that supported such a strong, convincing conclusion. For me, this is the definitive reading of PT. It makes sense of so many things that never made sense to me, the curious little itches this masterfully designed game left in my mind and kept me coming back to KZbin trying to figure out, scratch, or answer. I think why PT feels so powerful is that it captured something real--something real and dark--that Kojima was going through. There are so many forces in our society that prey upon disaffection and try to get people to misdirect it--we see so many people who are victims of this. Kojima was no doubt feeling the way the corporate world just wanted him to give up and disappear. He was feeling the destructiveness of late-stage capitalism and corporate greed and was at a real personal moment of giving in to despair or seeing the opportunity for rebirth. I love his story that he thought he had lost everything and slowly realized he had lost nothing as his art and friendships and creative partnerships had woven a strong web that made it relatively easy to restart from scratch. What tickles the itch I could never resolve before is that it doesn't make sense to see this as a wholly bleak game, because that bleak game would be never leaving the loop. Hell is going through the loop repeatedly without escape or relief. The player character ultimately escapes the loop. I love the interpretation that the game is supposed to represent an actual game used by the SH cult to infect more minds with murderous intentions. And that, notably by banding together with the larger gaming community to solve the game, the player character can break the spell and exit the loop.

I do think I might know about the hand prints. One of the Silent Hill games, which nobody likes but I think was a good story, involved a man who was raised by the Order and continuing killings to complete a ritual. A ritual that shouldn't work since he is combining what he was told in The Order with a misunderstanding that he came to when he was a kid. But he believes it works, and so it does. The main character is locked in the room where this ritual is supposed to take place in and when you look out of the peephole you can see handprints for the victims on the wall across from the apartment. Nobody else can see them but you can. If Kojima did his research and wanted to tie in the lesser-known or not well-explained things he would tie that in too. I believe the handprints are the radio host's victims after they died. The radio host must be doing a ritual and using all that death to make a world of his own like in the room.

I'm surprised more people don't analyze Kojima's stuff like this. You'd think given his taste in films, music and artists that it'd be pretty obvious to take a more metaphorical approach to reading his games rather than a 1:1 "this is what reality would be like in x situation" stories that people seem to only read his stuff as. Thanks so much for putting this out! I was of the mind this teaser was always SOME kind of swan song given the weirdly specific lines at the end of the teaser but I never came back to it since... well I thought it was a dead-in-the-water project. I played it when it first came out. Well, it had already been revealed to be a teaser for Silent Hills, but still, I had no idea what I was getting into. I played in the dark by myself with headphones on, and it was by far the scariest piece of media I've experienced in my adult life. It's amazing that a playable teaser of a canceled game changed horror games forever, inspired hundreds of lengthy video essays, and still contains mysteries to this day as its approaching 8 years, nearing a decade old. Edit: I would like to add that I agree that this wasn't really a playable teaser. I always had the feeling that it was a big middle finger to Konami for disrespecting Kojima and limiting his creative freedom. He was showing them that he could have taken any of their IPs and made a masterpiece out of it. What an amazing poetic way to leave a company in the dust. This of course also forced Konami into the biggest PR nightmare I have ever witnessed. The massive anticipation of Silent Hills and its "cancellation". But, if they weren't as predictable as Kojima suggested, then they could have possibly avoided the fallout, apologized to Kojima and arranged for him to work on Silent Hills.

I think what probably differentiates it the most, from the rest of P.T analyzes is more focus on non-meta narration of the game which I find really rarely in such analyzes, sadly so. But to be fair I think that approach to meta part is also in some ways innovative, especially the whole part about P.T. ending being sort of positive. Overall great stuff.

one thing I haven't seen spoken about PT is the political and social commentary imbedded in the game. The game focuses on a man who lost his job, felt emasculated by his wife having a job when he didn't and used alcohol and prescription medication to dull the pain he felt. He then begins listening to a radio program that says things like "nows the time for action. our society is rotten to the core. I'm talking to all the fine, upstanding folks got their walfare cute, got their jobs pulled out from under 'em. yeah, you! you know what to do! nows the time! do it!" and then murders his family because the voice on the radio told him to. The radio broadcast uses the same angry and manipulative tone that far right radio hosts like Alex jones uses. Alex Jones frequently talks in an aggressive style where he pumps his audience up into a frenzy usually with some sort of call to action attached to his ramblings and speaks to the feelings of social and economic anxieties of his audience. Alex Jones and other far right radio hosts will frequently tell the viewer how badly they've been treated and now its time to stand up and take back their country. The PT radio host like Alex jones is manipulating the economic and social anxieties of men who are looking for a strong authoritative voice that will mirror their own anger and tell them what to do about it. In PT Jack resents his wife because she has become the main bread winner of the house mirroring how many men have misogynistic views of women due to insecurities that women will replace them in the workplace. The radicalization of the men in PT turns them into monsters just as far right radicalization makes a lot of men into really hateful and dangerous people. The game is making a commentary on the worst qualities of American life. Its about how many men in the united states in the aftermath of the 2008 recession lost their jobs, felt angry they were unemployed and hated themselves for their own perceived emasculation, drowned their pain with booze and medication such as oxycontin, turned to far right conservative figures to give them comforting answers for the problems in their lives and had their anger pointed towards innocent targets such as women with often violent results. The allusion to war of the worlds is commenting on how radio still has the ability to make people believe blatant falsehoods. 75 years ago it was that aliens were invading and today its that the sandy hook shooting was a false flag attack.
