The Hapstone R2 Sharpening System: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

I’ve had this system for 3-4 months now, and for me it was totally worth it. I’ve got a pro model edgepro I’ve had for 15 years or so now. A couple of years ago I got a kme. I got a sharpmaker in the 90’s. And sometime in the last 5 or 6 years I got a ken onion worksharp. I slipped right into this system and was getting the sharpest most consistent edges I’ve ever gotten right away, no practice involved. Since I had edgepro and kme stones I didn’t bother buying any stones when I got it. I tend to use the kme diamond stones more. Setup is super fast, get the knife centered in the clamps, angle cube on the flat spot on the pivot housing, zero, snap angle cube onto the steel label plate on the stone holder and adjust to the angle I want (usually 17 degrees). Plus that collar on the shaft can be used as a thickness compensator but it’s also a fine tuning adjustment for the angle. It makes micro bevels a straight up breeze. I sharpened most of my coworkers pocket knives over the holidays and the longest is spent was about an hour on an m390 blade that was butter knife dull. Legit it was the best $300 I’ve spent on a sharpening system. Can’t recommend it enough.

A friend of mine just picked up this system and for me I think it’s a “dream” system. I have a KME now and I took a knife I had sharpened on it in the past and then resharpened on his hapstone and what I noticed is the bevels were more consistent in width side to side and the Hapstone clamps actually seemed to be more true or accurate than the KMEs which was surprising. Would you say you experienced something similar?

I love my Venev stones but I go with single sided over the dual grit ones. No chance of grit contamination, you get more abrasive and they're easier to mount in stone holders since they're tin and attached to a blank vs thick and no grooves.

Hey Nick! Just got myself one of these recently. Kinda panicked when I saw this video come up: "Oh no, what little nitpick did I miss that now I'll never be able to unsee?!" Wanted to address a few things I think you skipped that folks might care about: 1) That little add-on *can* be used as a stone thickness compensator, like any stop collar could be. But that rotating bit is actually a fine-tuning angle adjuster. Twisting the threaded bit lets you raise and lower the sharpening rod by extremely small, precise amounts. A hell of a lot easier than trying to manually slide it up and down with any precision. These are marketed to high-end folks who might otherwise be considering a Blitz 360 (which itself has precision angle adjusting) and plan to use this with an angle cube, but it's useful also for clumsy/inarticulate folks like myself. The Hapstone one feels very well-made, but for anyone with a 3D printer, a kind community member has created 3D models compatible with all major rod-based sharpening systems: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3644585 Which brings us to...

2) There's a metal plate atop the stone holder that was added specifically to securely mount an angle cube. A lot of KME owners will glue a small slab of metal to the wooden back of the stone holder for that same purpose. Which brings us to another common KME mod: 3) That wooden ball at the base of the sharpening rod is ergonomic and easy to grip, but also keeps your fingers further away from the sharp edge of your blade, should you accidentally do anything silly. That's *another* common mod for the KME -- people will replace the little plastic screw at the base of the stone holder with a threaded knob to grip. 4) The part the rod slides back and forth through runs on 4 rows of ball bearings that provide a super smooth drag, making it easier to "feel" the stone against the knife. It also completely eliminates rod play compared to the KME (whose nylon collar can slowly wear), let alone something like the far cheaper Lansky or DMT systems (where the rod can clank around in a much bigger hole). 5) This whole system is sold as modular parts if you want, and the base is fully compatible with an EdgePro-style (rest the knife on a ledge, only theirs have a magnet to hold it in place) unit that you can swap with the clamp module. 6) The Venev Centauri stones cost $100. There's no discount if you bundle them with the sharpener or add them as a separate item in your cart. 7) The lack of a case. Ugh. You're 1000% right. I thought a lot about which parts I'd want to take apart/reassemble each time and decided I was comfortable removing the rotating clamp module, since I'd need the 4mm hex driver anyway to tighten the clamp and you barely have to loosen the bolts to remove the clamp module. That brings the bare minimum dimensions of the base to 8-1/16" x 10" x 3.25". The rod (if you disassemble it with the 2mm hex driver) is 13" long. I found this put it in a kind of odd range for aftermarket hardshell cases: most are either smaller (maxing out at 6" width) or much longer (in the 16" length). I was looking for the smallest possible case, and actually *just* ordered the HUL "Small Military Style Hard Case" off Amazon. Its internal 8x10x4 dimensions should allow the base to sit at a very slight angle, while the 13" rod will have to go diagonal (geometry says I've got 13.4" on the diagonal of a prism that size). It comes tomorrow, so I'll let folks know.

The HUL case did not end up working out. They overstated their internal dimensions (they said "about 8 x 10 x 4", so I can't say they lied), and it did not fit. It was also _very_ cheaply made, and clearly a visual-imitation-only version of a Pelican-style case. I ended up going with the Eylar "Compact 13.37" Protective Gear, Camera, & Gun Case ." Night-and-day quality difference (feels pretty comparable to my actual Pelican cases), and everything fits inside great. The mcro-adjust's main purpose is to allow you to accurately adjust the sharpening angle - best in the industry I believe. 1. adjust sharpening angle with the micro-adjust collar, and tighten the tilting head, 2. drop the micro-adjust down to set the distance from the head to the adjust = stone thickness, and now tighten the collar, and 3, when you change to a different stone, loosen the head, insert the new stone of another thickness, then re-tighten the tilting head. For holding a square stone, don't you rotate the holder 180 degrees? BTW, maybe boring, but the goal is consistency - which it appears to provide.

The more I sharpen my knives the more I find that I actually prefer a working edge over a screaming edge. If the knife just cuts paper, it does fine for all of the tasks I'm likely to use it for and doesn't accidentally cut the crap out of me when I'm fidgeting with my knife. Cooking knives are the one exception.

At the price and taking up the space, if you're a professional wanting something set up the whole time then are there reasons you'd choose this over a powered system (or even simply running a finer grit belt on the grinder you likely already have if you're a maker)?

Most of the powered systems cant give you a perfectly flat edge, the wheel sharpeners will give you a slightly concave edge and the belts will typically give a slightly convex edge. This is not really an issue for 95% of knives for but some it can be if you want a full flat grind or something. Powered sharpeners will obviously have significant speed advantages though. There really isn't a single tool that does everything the best when it comes to sharpening.

That's not a thickness compensator, it's a fine-tuning adapter. If you use a digital angle gauge, then you use that to fine tune the angle you want. Without it, it's pretty hard to adjust freehand from xx.x to xx (whole number) degrees. You can also use it as a thickness compensator.

You can adjust the angle of the jaws to match your FFG by tightening the black screw behind the forward silver main screw, it's a balance between the two screws.

There are so many similar sharpening systems out there now, it may be a matter of "pick your price". Yeah, the more expensive ones will (probably) always be better....but there are $50 options for those of us who sharpen once in a blue moon that work pretty good too! As a reviewer, you have the difficulty of comparing the Porsche to the Honda, or the CIVIVI to the Chris Reeves. How much "meh" do you forgive for being a few buck cheaper?

Plenty of other reviews of the worksharp. This system can do a whole lot more than the worksharp. Better quality components like machined steel and aluminium compared to plastic. The edge pro style stones are way better the worksharp stones. Clamps the knife much more solid with no flex.

Before TSPROF had been known to the US, i found, via a russian knife forum, and talked the owner of TSPROF into sending the originals to myself, Jim Ankerson, and Wranglerstar. Tried to get Jim Skelton and AposteP onboard but they didn't respond. Well, Skelton did and sai he didn't care about sharpening. So I got a K01. They started making so many revisions i couldn't keep up. Anyway, i stopped using it and it sits there rusting as i type this. Too much to set up. I can get results just as good with a ruixin pro or whatever. The russian diamond stones from vendeved or whoever they were called (VID) were really good though. I just don't have the desire to get perfect edges anymore.

Also, i stopped chasing knives. I have different knives I'm content with. Edc a slysz bowie with an m4 carbon fiber pm2, millie with 204p, zt 0561, olamic wayfarer with m390, and a stainless opinel #8 on standby. Got rid of basically everything else. And i prefer to handstone my knives. It's so much faster and gives the slight convex edge and i find that cuts easier than hard v edges. The bevels may not be perfect but after stropping i can still shave hair easily and I'm good with that.

I use a KME and have been very pleased with the results...except...for one thing. That is the limit on the length of knife you can sharpen on the KME. Now iv3 been told that longer knives CAN be sharpened on the KME, but I’m don’t think I want to go to the extreme of that task. This m@chine looks to me like it would sharpen short or long knives both effectively. So I must say the only thing that would stop me from purchasing this sharpener is the price. You could spend twice maybe three times as much money on it than the KME.

Don't be fooled by kme low entry price....because once you begin to buy all the accessories they add up super quick...like to the tune of $1200 all in The kme is not remotely in same league as the r2 as far as build quality and overall versatility I had a kme for roughly 7 yrs until it fell apart on me....I doubt the hapstone will do same.

I prefer non clamp systems. They are so much more versatile in sharpening different blade shapes. I have a hapstone m2 and edge pro along with kme, Ken onion grinder, Spyderco and a bunch of other sharpening stuff. The M2 is my goto. Most of these systems are not for novice people, but it makes sharpening more accurate angles.

How is it overly complicated, you clamp the knife down and you sharpen it. You don't have to soak anything you don't have to measure any weird angles. It's all perfectly controlled with guides.

So the only possible sharpening you could do would have to happen at the correct angle. It's hard to explain much simpler when you actually just use it.

The large size & stability combined with the long stroke & ability to use a variety of different stones seem to make this system more suited to a professional sharpener than a hobbyist. Hobbyists want a case & more compact size.

@@NickShabazz thank you Sir for your reply! Getting very close to pulling the trigger on the KME. The community customer support and accessories for the KME are hard to beat. The R2 looks tempting but too big for a town house with no dedicated space. The only other thing on the horizon is the new Hapstone RS on kick starter it does look interesting. The lack of stop collars is a little concerning for a newbie. I wish some one had one to test. Thank you again Nick I thoroughly enjoy your channel!!

It wouldn't hurt to mention that the piece is made in Ukraine. You do it every time when a knife is made in USA, don't you? Expensive? As you noted this system is sturdy and heavy as rock. If you compare it to KME, the KME is not that much cheaper, but it is much flimsy shaky and unstable piece of equipment (I have both), and with a plastic pivot for the rod! Hapstone has a whole bearing system right there. Did you see that? Why not to comment about it? It is as smooth as you can get. You can feel there is much more "real estate" that comes with Hapstone. Compare it to Russian analogue. Good piece too, no doubt, but TWICE as expensive!

This looks like a total rip off of the Russian TORSF Knife sharpener, Which is a beautifully machined piece of high-quality sweetness!
