The Harbour (1930)

Pro Patria presents - THE HARBOUR - a British Instructional Films production.
Gold Coast of British West Africa. Cocoa trees. Pods of cocoa are shown growing on the tree trunks. Native farmers break up pods and take out the beans. These are dried then we see men shovelling them into sacks. Men sew up the tops of sacks. Men, women and children carry sacks on their heads. Sacks loaded on to a freight train. Harbour of the Gold Coast. Men carry two sacks each on their shoulders and row out to sea on boats to show how cocoa was transported in the days before there was a proper harbour. A special cocoa train is featured. Men tip sacks down a chute from barrows. Machinery with tins of cocoa (?) rolling past. Instruments used by engineer drawing up plans for the harbour. Karare (?) site chosen.
Men working to build harbour. Bridges are built. Baskets carried on heads, rails carried on heads and railroad built. Gangs of workers crowded on to open top train. White bosses in safari hats. Top shot of the pay day queue - crowds of men crushed together. Market set up in front of queue. Shovelling earth with mechanical digger. Quarries. Explosives laid and rocks blown up. Freight train carries stone to build the harbour. Men carry pieces of stone on their heads. Daquarare (?) hospital, water tower, railway station, roads. Breakwater stretches out to sea. Top shot of the harbour. Sea crashing against the rocks of the harbour. Shots of ships at the quay side. "Englishmen and Gold Coast workers toil together to produce cocoa and chocolate" the narrator tells us. Sacks of cocoa on conveyor belt. Cans on a conveyor belt. Child on a beach. "The End".
