this is kind of the "intro to mach bike" section that illustrates a lot of the principles behind sapphire/emerald biking and spinner manip. it might be easy for people think pokemon movement tech "isn't that hard", but the issue is rather how hard you are punished for mistakes if it causes you to hit an optional, as you described. FYI, at 6:25 when you pass the picnicker, you have to turn right a tile earlier (immediately after the bridge) or else she is 1/16 to quickspin you, and the run-to-bike window is typically 5 frames, not 3 (still tricky, though). cheers for the vid. can't tell if this makes me want to play saf again or stay far far away lol.

I remember trying and retrying to get the lowest possible time on the bike path because I was convinced there was some sort of prize for getting through it very fast. Don't remember how low I managed but it was great practice for the sky pillar. It also made travel way easier, I crashed every now and then but it was fun trying to go through crowded routes without crashing.

Incredible video. I love learning about the different ways gamers choose to masochistically suffer for the eventual glory of a great run. I never knew how rough this game was to speedrun until now. Also, don't let yourself be bothered by people who nitpick and complain about very minor mistakes. Most people who watch this aren't gonna be crazy enough to attempt this speedrun; you just gotta nail the most important part - giving the audience a deep sense of the extreme pressure and pain of this speedrun. Which you did wonderfully.

aw wait i don’t mean to make a mockery of the community :( i try to reach out to people when relevant and do my best to get things factually correct. when i say the mach bike “ruins” runs i mostly meant that the fact that its movement is so precise it is often the reason why runners have to reset. i really admire runners and the work they’ve put into routing things like this and i just want to share with the broader youtube community. if there’s anything you feel is incorrect please feel free to share - i’ll admit i don’t have the years of experience to get everything correct 100% of the time but i’m very open to people correcting me and i try to fix any mistakes when people point them out

my criticisms are exactly as laid out. also (and more heinously) you fail to credit people for their gameplay footage more often than not. many of us are not happy for these reasons. If my criticisms are coming off as insulting, it's rooted in the reaction to the way you carry out content creation has irked many runners in PSR.

@TuckerLeRat i appreciate the feedback - i think what you were referring to are the 2 occasions in which i failed to credit the runners that i’ve since gone back and credited them accordingly. i reached out to both runners individually to apologize and to my knowledge we had reconciled that error. i understand my style of content isn’t for everyone and i’m still experimenting and trying to understand what people like/don’t like - i sent you a PM on discord and would love to get your thoughts on more specifically how i could improve and best represent the community in a way that feels appropriate to those involved. again, i really mean no disrespect to the community and i only started posting these videos after being inspired by runs like yours, amoebaUK, wavewarrior, and countless others

I feel like "this sucks" is different from "this sucks for speedrunners." Examples of really broken things for normal gameplay that would be fine for speedruns 1. enemies that can two shot the player with permadeath. 2. An combat buff item that can duplicate itself compounding every three minutes when planted in the ground. 3. Endgame items that allow complete damage invulnerability. 4. A common enemy with a 5% chance to oneshot permakill the player that cannot be mitigated by any method. 5. Randomly generated starting items with a 75% chance to make the early game incredibly difficult and slow to progress. Examples of things that would be fine for normal gameplay but extremely bad for speedruns: 1. A mechanic where you can gamble a certain rare and not inherently very useful item to have a small chance of getting run-critical items and a large chance to get other items. 2. Random balance of health and damage output on the final boss. 3. A lategame item that dramatically accelerates speedruns using a high skill technique, but which has a spawnrate that's different per game instance, and varies exponentially. 4. Randomly generated continental terrain where the final level may or may not be on another continent, this isn't obvious until near the end of a run, and the ocean level requires a completely different set of items to deal with. Right, what items are balanced for a run vs what items are balanced for normal gameplay are completely different things.

The Mach Bike is everything I despise about speedruns, wrapped into three little words: "Because It's There". You can just...not use the Mach Bike. Make it a Mach-less run. But no, that takes the "challenge" out of it. And by challenge I mean the complete pure unadulterated masochism. Which is apparently all speedrunning was ever good for. It's not even inaccessible. One could sit down and learn either all of this over the course of a few months, or how to play an actual game like Melee. But at the end of the day the person playing Melee will have so much more fun, meet more people and have an inherently and objectively better time than the person trying to master the Mach Bike, or fit in as many glitches as possible into their Glitchless Run for Mirror's Edge.

I just realized gen 3 Pokémon games are the only ones I played and sweet baby Jesus they were amazing. Can someone let me know if any generation slaps as hard as gen 3? Or is gen 3 relatively mid compared to other generations? I have no idea, please, I miss pokemon and would love to get back into it

3 is one of the best well rounded gens, 4 is really positively regarded too (minus things like game speed which is really slow) and I've even heard people say good things about 5. Gen 1-2 favoritism is largely nostalgia and gen 6+ is just so easy as to be mostly boring.

It's because of how running lets you manipulate NPC direction which lets you avoid them easier, which the bike can't do on top of having less movement control to begin with

The goal of a speedrun is not to finish the game fast. It's to finish it faster than the others. You cannot influence the direction NPCs face when biking, so you have to unride/reride whenever that manipulation is needed, and the bike itself gains momentum as you travel, thus reaching very high speed as long as you don't stop or are interrupted. For these reasons, this bike allows someone to finish the run a lot faster than bikeless or with the other bike, but tapping into that requires very frequent and precise imputtings. The difference in time between a player who masters these and someone who succeeds most of the time will be astronomical, as is the difference in skills between these. Therefore, the existence of this bike makes it mandatory to master these complicated inputings in order to even have a shot at reaching the top.
