Welcome to another round of Quick & Dirty Tips for the Digital SAT!
Today's question is the hardest IMO there is on the SAT Reading, so please take the time to watch the video carefully.
With the Digital SAT, a question can have an advanced literature passage with difficult vocabulary and figurative language that is quite challenging to decipher. With such a question, don't panic. There is still a roadmap to follow!
1. Jump right to the question and read it first
2. Identify that it is a purpose/function question
3. Look at the sentence BEFORE the one being asked about
4. Ignore the difficult vocabulary
5. Translate the literary language into normal language
6. Eliminate the wrong answers based on extreme language and language that does not fit the literary question type.
For more details, please watch the video, and please let me know if you have questions or need further explanations.
Thank you!

Please refer to the following question: The following text is adapted from a novel by John Smith titled "The Journey to the East". In the text, the narrator is describing his feelings as he embarks on a journey to a distant land. My emotions are complicated and not easily describable. I feel a strong pull that brings both joy and sorrow. I am confident in the outcome of this journey, but I am unsure of what exactly it is that I desire.[For months, I have been preparing for this moment, and now the time has finally come to set off on my adventure] . Leaving behind the familiar and comfortable, I travel towards the unknown, where danger and uncertainty await me. Which choice best describes the function of the underlined sentence in the text as a whole? (P.S. I am unable to underline the sentence here. I enclosed it in square brackets) A. It reveals the length of time the narrator has spent preparing for the journey. B. It shows the narrator's confidence in the outcome of the journey. C. It highlights the narrator's love for adventure and excitement. D. It underscores the narrator's hesitation about leaving his familiar surroundings. Here answer choice A talks about what the underlined sentence means. I thought when we deal with function questions we do not pick answer choice that paraphrase what the underlined statement says. Instead, pick the one that connects either from the previous sentence or the next sentence. Here, Choice D describes the next sentence and B states the previous sentence. In that case, what exactly is the answer for this question?

This is a really good question! Sorry for seeing it so late! In this case, none of the answer choices refer to the other sentences like they did in the problem i did in the video. Thus, the only option left is to paraphrase what's in the sentence itself, so it is A.

Thank you for responding to my query. Your videos give a different perspective to get to the answer as quickly as possible with minimal amount of reading. It is wonderful to watch your explanations to this approach. I have a couple of follow-up questions on this topic: 1) Are there any specific keywords which determine if the underlined statement is a counter statement/scope of the study/a general trend? Especially the case of contradicting opinion or disagreeing case. How do you differentiate such cases when it comes to these questions? 2) Imagine a hypothetical example. I am just making this up for the sake of understanding the concept. There is a new ice-cream parlor in town and a study is done to compare the percentage of people going to this place. There are two groups of people in the town:Group1 and Group2. Group 1 had a higher number of people going to the store than Group2. [Underlined sentence: Group 2 has more residents staying closer to the parlor than Group 1]. In this case the underlined sentence in my opinion is the following: a) It is neither a counterstatement nor an introduction to a context/scope of the study b) It seems more to me like a trend which says hey there are more people living closer than why is it that they do not go often to the store? could I treat this as it suggests a reason why a trend is shown? Are there any slight nuances which determine if the underlined statement is: Counter statement Introduction to context/scope Reason for a pattern Disagreement Contradiction Would you be able to explain with examples that hit the above criteria. @@SexyJ

Hey sexy j! On the digital SAT,do we have an option to write on the screen? Even if it does, what’s way more practical? To write on a paper or to write on the screen?

You can make annotations, but it's probably just better to underline or circle things rather than full-on write things.
