I don’t know much but I think it’s that because the world isnt flat it’s difficult to make a round Earth onto a flat map so the poles and stretched out because it’s supposed to be round

Sjsu Shay the earth is a globe so to make it fit a flat rectangular map they stretch out the top and bottom (to put it simply). This make things look bigger the further north and south of the equator they are. Antarctica isn’t anywhere near that big

Although I knew Asia was the biggest continent at a young age, I thought that Antarctica was bigger than it really was. Then I learned about the different projection map and realized that continents like Africa were bigger than I first thought.

It's not actually as far as Australia. Things closer to the poles get stretched more on maps. Greenland is the same size as Africa on the map but 14 times smaller then Africa in real life

The south pole is not on in the middle because the earth is on an axis. When looking at the maps it is actually tilted slightly to the left by 23.5 degrees, therefore meaning that the north is slightly to the right, straight below the north is the south pole. Hopefully i have simplified it enough so everyone can understand. Please like so jack can see.

Hey jack The reason why the South Pole isn’t directly underneath the equator, is because the earth is actually tilted on an axis at about 45 degrees. If you want a better explanation, it’s search up why we get different seasons and it’ll explain it there.

It didn't matter where you clicked for the south pole. Everywhere along the bottom of the map is the south pole. It's the same location because of the way the map is projected.

Antarctica isn't as big as that map suggests. Google Maps API uses the Mercator Projection, which is one if many ways to project the globe onto a flat plane. The Mercator Projection sacrifices the size accuracy for shape accuracy. Things closer to the top or bottom of the map are larger than those in the centre

Ok, it wouldn't be in the middle because your basing it off a flat map, not a spherical one, if you imagine the map being spherical the bottom of the map would all connect together, therefore somewhere along it would be the exact south pole

Actually, there is no permanent south-pole. It's always moving, so it actually doesn't even matter for you to know where the sour-pole is, you just had to know where the *ceremonial* south-pole is.
