The VL front end was how the first bobber guys extended the front end by using it on later springer equipped harleys, before the "chopper" idea came along. VL front ends are rare as hen's teeth over here on the East Coast. Congrats on aquiring one and having it straightened. I don't blame you for being thrilled over it one bit.

Thank You. The XA is actually the long one. They are approx. 2 1/2" longer and were the "opposed twin" military bike developed for use in North Africa in WW II. That's what started long front ends on the West Coast. I have one on my Knucklehead. It's exactly long enough and handles like a dream. Incidentally, at "Born Free" a few weeks ago, I finally met one of the guys who extended all of the front ends at Buchannan's in the old days. Fun stuff. That's Buchannan's Spoke and Wheel that was in Rosemead CA. They are still alive and well, but not doing front ends or frames any more. And you're right, all this old stuff is a thrill.

Thank You. I got to learn it the easy way. They came in the front door and I learned to repair them. When I started in shops, Shovelheads were the newest thing. I maintained a fully restored VL for one of our customers. For new mechanics today, they learn what is most plentiful. That's their job. Our stuff went way back, because you could rebuild it all over and over. Nowdays, it becomes obsolete before it wears out. Different kind of thinking. Not good or bad, just different.

I sold it along with my 1948 Indian Chief to finance my first divorce in 84. I got $5.000 for it and $3.500.00 for the Indian if I recall.

@@pacificmike9501 I wish I could post a photo of the 33 for you to see. I have a photo someplace of the 48. I had a 46 Indian I sold to buy the 33 and 48 basket cases. The 46 looked good but the frame was once broken near the kicker and someone wielded and did a good job except the kicker gear was out of alignment just enough that if you didn't really kick it hard the ratchet would catch and you got a good kick back from it. The guy who bought it got his ankle and collar bone broken when it kick him so hard he hit a door frame on his garage. Dale weights about a buck forty anyhow.and he didn't understand the spark advance and had it in the wrong spot.

Thanks for the comparisons on the different springers. Is the stem 1in or 1 1/8 in in diameter?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
I believe it is 1" now. I had the stem changed when I had the fork straightened.

Mike I just installed a turbine vent on the roof of my garage cost $50 at home depot took 45 minutes to install and what a difference in temperature it allows the rising heat to escape. Have a blessed week my friend

That would put in through the floor in the upstairs. Good idea though. Take care of yourself.

Hello Mike, I'm currently restoring a 1935 VD and I have VLD heaven and the shop dope books but I'm looking for information (a blowup) on the steering damper and neck bearings ? It seems the aftermarket dampener rod is too long. ? Any info would be great. Thanks and keep the vids coming
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I don't have the damper on mine. Try "Tedd Cycle" in New York.

Hi Mike love your vids! Question...I have an older P&P girder front end that I rebuilt and am gonna be running on my current shovel build. I'm getting mixed information on how tight the rocker nuts on it should be. Another ol fella told me a little more than hand tight and of course loctite. What are your thoughts? if you don't mind...thanx!
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know. In those cases, you have to look at it and figure out how it was intended to function. Loose rockers sounds scary to me, but, I'd have to look at it. It seems the studs should be tight, but there should be clearance for the rockers to move freely. Sometimes there is machining involved. A good machinist should be able to figure it out for you.

Mike, I hear ya about the heat. We had a few nights in the 50s(that was nice) but the furnace is back on out there. That is going to be a bitchin bike when completed-(old slang).

Do you have a video that shows easy method to press neck cups and bearings in?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
There are tools made for it (long stud with a couple of plates). But, if they went in easy, they wouldn't stay put very well. I showed installing them on the Flathead, but those were turned down cups for mock up purposes only.
