It used to be about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. As an orthodox christian from Romania it hurts to know that Christmas has become a consumerist tradition, and that people have been brainwashed into thinking that Christmas is all about spending and decorating.

Same. I'm not one of those alarmists who thinks some shadowy group is waging a war on Christmas for ideological reasons but that's kind of what's happening. Retailers and some other big businesses just keep commercializing things more and more and more every year and it's both depressing and morally bankrupt. Every year the Christmas season starts earlier and earlier; where I live it used to be main just restricted to December and was strictly an after Thanksgiving thing but lately I notice ads starting earlier and Christmas stuff being sold sooner. 2023 I saw Christmas stuff being sold before summer was over and my local news station had a whole "Christmas shopping tips" segment that aired right after Halloween talking about how cost of living and inflation was high while wages were still low and offering tips on how to establish and stick to a budget while simultaneously encouraging people to spend as much as possible saying the average local was spending something like $1000 on Christmas.

While I don't think that lying to your kid about Santa is a good idea, I saw it as a years long lie when I first figured it out. I don't see any way to not tell your kid that Santa is made up and not real without your kid ruining the fun for the other kids. Kids talk, and if one is told by their parents that Santa isn't real, that kid sure as hell is telling all the others what he was told. Which forces the parents to either double down on the Santa lie or give them the hard truth right before Christmas. It's a lose/lose situation.

1. I disagree with the santa aspect as i feel as if teaching children to lie is an actual good thing 2. Its a good thing because everyone lies anyways and if you dont about small things itll bite you in the ass and you wont make it in the world as well 3. Also waiting up and tracking santa and making cookies for him and all the aspects of it is incredibly important for the creative department for developing brains. Also its fun bro :) gotta love the big fat man himself

I'm glad I was lied about existence of Santa, it was magical time of the year and the excitement while waiting for presents or faking sleep to see Santa and going for a walk with parent seeking for Santa's cart while other parent planted presents and told me that I missed Santa but he said If I'm gonna be good person I'm gonna meet him someday, things like that are very important for kids happiness and good childhood.

I admittedly don’t agree with the part about how “lying” about Santa is some detrimental boogie man. It’s harmless and gives them joy. When they’re old enough, they figure it out - we all did - but we aren’t all screwed up from it, either. 🤷‍♂️ That said, Happy Holidays!

I've seen evidence to the contrary. In several polls, 25% or more of people said that it had a megetive impact on them. Only 50% said that it didn't effect them one way or the other. Lying is lying no matter what it's about.

As a Christian, I don’t celebrate Christmas because it truly has nothing to do with Christ. You’re absolutely right about its pagan origins. I can spend time with my family and friends ANY time of year. It has infinitely more meaning for me when we all put forth genuine effort to spend time with each other, rather than just doing it cause it’s “customary” or because everyone feels obligated. ❤️

The only part you get wrong is that Christmas predates Jesus sure the Christ part is only 1700 years old (when the church adopted it) but originally this time of year was about pagan festivals celebrating the solstice the biggest one being Saturnilla which the church adopted some of it's rituals into the modern Christmas we have today. So the idea of people having a holiday around this time of year predates Jesus by at least hundreds of not a few thousand years
@brahtrumpwonbigly7309
@brahtrumpwonbigly7309 8 ай бұрын
This time of year was never exclusively pagan, it just also shared pagan holidays. The church never actually adopted any of the pagan traditions when it was decided upon to make it a holiday. Anything that is even remotely related to paganism is either too broad to logically claim it is pagan exclusive, or is something that came about far later. More of a pagan addition to the Christian holiday.
@trolljones4386
@trolljones4386 8 ай бұрын
@@brahtrumpwonbigly7309 I gotta preface this although i think i already implied this, i love the holiday Christmas, i am fine even the Christian additions to it however to claim it was all Jesus is just incorrect. *This time of year was never exclusively pagan, it just also shared pagan holidays* The winter solstice predated Jesus by hundreds of years at minimum, this is the real origin of Christmas as a whole because what ended up happening is when the Christians finally had power they decided to change the old holiday into a Christianized one. Transform it from Pagans worshipping Saturn to Christians celebrating the birth of Christ and this happened in the 300's only once Christians actually got power (prior to this no record of Christmas exist). *when it was decided upon to make it a holiday* The just intended it to replace the Pagan holiday to help get people to convert to Christianity easier, make it easier for the society to accept. Clearly the Christians did not adopt the ritual of killing animals or open orgies but you get the point.

There's obviously no coordinated plan but rather a natural evolution but it still strikes me as self defeating to push so hard for the Christmas shopping season. People are encouraged to spend fortunes on Christmas which ironically means every year they have to plan further and further ahead so people are preparing for Christmas and budgeting months in advance which means lowered spending.

You are correct!! Modern Christmas mostly a combo of Heathen/Nors tradition Yule and the birth of Christ. Back when Catholics were trying to convert more pagans. While Christ was born in later spring they moved it to winter to overlap the celebrations with that of a Norse deity,I believe it was a demigod. "Hey you have a deity born of God and human?So do we",and let them take their traditions along into Christianity with them. I just recently learned about the pagan origins of caroling "Mari Lwyd" there is an amazing KZbinr video by PBS that talks about that tradition.

Just looked up where Christmas came from and I got this. Keep reading and you'll find that Christmas is inspired by traditions from the Romans, Celtics, Norse, Druids, and more (all pagan). At the time, all of these different groups shared one big celebration that just hapened to fall around Christmas time - the winter solstice.

There's actually a massive amount of myth involved in saying that Christmas traditions are rooted in paganism. Some could be, but many just aren't. Like giving gifts. We can't take a point like that too seriously as gift giving is not something pagan specific no matter what time of year it is.

Probably true. There was a popularly held idea at the time that Jesus's crucifixion and conception were on the same day of the year, so they decided to celebrate what they believed was His birthday, which would have been in December. I always liked looking into the history of things, and there's lots of little mistakes and misconceptions about Christmas and why/what it is, and that's a fun little one.

I think some do, but some start to look at it as a time to spoil each other and get spoiled still. I would say this happens a lot when people have kids. As a parent, you want to buy your kids things and give them the experiences they had when they were young, and many times this is conflated, erroneously, with recieving many nice things instead of smaller, thoughtful presents and many loving memories.

It's the date around the winter solstice the most important day of the year if you life in the northern hemisphere. Several religions co-opted the day for their use, that's nothing bad in general and also takes nothing away from it's meaning. But traditionally the day for gifts was the 6th of December, St. Nicholas day but because St.Nicholas is a catholic saint the protestants changed the "gift-day" from the 6th to Christmas. Besides that traditionally it isn't Santa Claus who brings gifts on Christmas, it's "The Christ Child" an angelic baby Jesus. (I'm not kidding, as a child I believed Baby-Angel-Jesus personally the big man himself would come on Christmas eve to bring me gifts. Jesus himself would fly into my grandparents living room talk to them, hand them the gifts and fly away. And I wasn't even raised in a religious family but man... that's what they call a transcended experience.)

@@cdev2117the day was chosen because they thought it was His birthday, that holds true. Documents from within the Church at the time show this was the only motive ever discussed in writing. They believed Jesus's crucifixion and conception were on the same day, 9 months prior, and wanted to celebrate His birthday as well.

@@DorbolsIt isn't pagan. There are some pagan/secular aspects that have been normalized as more and more non Christians began celebrating, but it is not pagan in any meaning of the word. Most aspects are incorrectly attributed to paganism based on assumption, and some by posing an incomplete picture of pagan traditions to make them seem more relatable. As far as historical record goes, Christmas can only be proven to be a naturally occurring product of the Christian church for the sole purpose of celebrating Jesus's birth on the day they genuinely thought He was born.
