This video is made by request from one of my subscribers. I also got some requests based on my last video about the hosen to take a little more time to explain the terminology and show the sewing techniques so its easier for people who are new to sewing to follow and learn with the video.
In this episode I will make a reconstruction or interpretation of a simple pill box style hat based on textile fragments from vikinge age Hedeby in modern day northern Germany.
The fabric is leftovers from my video about making the hosen. It is thick wool dyed with mix of onion skins and walnuts. The original fragments has no trace of a linen liner, but I wanted this for extra padding and comfort.
The hosen I made in the previous video are working really well. The thick wool lets me walk through bramble bushes without being scratched or getting caught. They are warm and comfortable and a great addition to my viking kit.
This video is primarily recorded in Klelund in the south western Denmark. It is one of the few places in Denmark that has a population of wild boar. This huge forest is fenced and protected. The wild boar is native to Denmark but has been hunted to extinction. The boars do occationaly enter Denmark crossing our southern border from Northern Germany. But due to fear of them infecting the huge populations of domestic pigs for meat production sadly they are hunted down and kept out. So the few populations we have are controlled and kept in fenced wildlife areas. They are one of my favourite animals in the nordic forest and I was very fortunate to have a few of them visit me while i sat beneath the oaks. They are very strong and powerful animals and you have to be very respectful with them. But I like the fact that it never ceases to remind me that I am merely a guest and I am not in charge here. Its a healthy perspective i think.

I made one of them for myself a few months ago.But i didn't put in a liner. I was making leg wraps and had extra material so i made a matching hat. It makes a good helmet liner

Great video as always R! A sewing tip for next time is: say you start from the linnen side you pass over the linen through the wool, then over the wool but through the linnen, back over the linnen and through the wool. This also historical, plus it doesnt require sewing the hems just folding them in and thus saves time :)

Hello Rein. Thank you for your comment. In my opinion the hardest things about making all these things is finding the time and concentration. Those two are major factors for my creativity. And with them (and a little research and know how) I can make most things. My main book is Unearthing Hedeby. Its a huge publication about the excavations and finds from Viking Age Hedeby settlement. The finds there are massive and the book is really good. Hedeby was close to my geographical location so I like to base as much of my gear from there if possible. But honestly mostly I do my research in dedicated facebook groups. Reading discussions about recreations, looking at pictures and drawings of the original finds on facebook or elsewhere online. And I find a lot of inspiration in looking at the details of other peoples interpretations and reproductions of a certain artefact. Uh and last but certainly not least by face to face discusions with fellow crafters at events and sharing knowledge an experience. Im not too much of a book worm, but I do have some good books lying around. I can check when Im home. And I could send you the names of my favourite FB sites?

Thank you Woofie:) im happy for this feedback. Normally I like to buy fabrics at viking fairs so I can touch with my hands and talk to the person who dyed it - or get advice if I will dye it myself. But there is a good online shop in Denmark I can refere you too if you want?

I dont have a specificly reconstructed hedeby hood but a more generic hood i use in many of my videos made from leather. Its one of these things that is just roughly based on an idea of a standard cut or design but unfortunately not a dedicated reproduction. I Will add this to my to do list:)
