My favorite classic horror movie!

Thanks for the really interesting run-down on Shirley Jackson! "The Haunting (1963)", one of my two favorite 'horror'/'psychological-terror' movies of all time (favorite two movies period, truth be told). My other favorite horror movie is The Haunting's sibling -- which is arguably also based on Shirley Jackson's book -- it's called "The Legend of Hell House (1973)". I recently found out that was based on a book by Richard Matheson called "Hell House" but I can't be persuaded he didn't borrow *heavily* from Jackson's story, going by the movie (I haven't read it yet). The two stories have the exact same generalized plot but they differ in that the former revolves around an emotionally needy psychic (Eleanor) which leaves her wide open to the spiritual forces around her -- if not subconsciously causing the haunting disturbances herself, and the latter is more like a horror mystery where the two psychics are put through their paces trying to discern and clear the evil out of the vast old mansion. Both stories have: a pair of mediums (one of which dies), the unfortunate psychic is accused of letting themselves be misled/of getting too involved with the spirits emotionally and probably they shouldn't be there, a non-psychic parapsychologist is running the show with the parapsychologist's wife along for much of the ride, the mansion's current owner having sent them there (but for two different reasons)...and the antagonist for both was a sadistic and depraved uber-wealthy man and any souls he's trapped in the house with him. They're both absolutely wonderful with excellent performances, especially by Julie Harris in The Haunting, and Pamela Franklin and Roddy McDowall in The Legend of Hell House. Both movies still give me the chills and make me keep looking out of the corner of my eye while watching, even during daylight. Most modern horrors fail to do that for me...I think maybe that's because they rely too heavily on bloody scenes instead of leaning hard into mental tension and a palpable fear of the unseen. The echoing knocking on the doors down the lonnng hallway in The Haunting...shiver.

The Haunting is one of my all time fave Gothic nouveau type horror movies. Actually, it is THE all time fave. When that thick door started moving in and out almost as if breathing and straining to burst open! Wow, what a great scene 💀
