An awesome movie. One of the scarier scenes: when Eleanor thinks she is holding tight to Theodora's hand during violent ghostly pounding and wakes to find she is across the room - "Whose hand was I holding?" Sent chills through me. No blood & gore just good sound effects and imagination. Take a hint Hollywood.

I’m 61 so that was long ago, but I feel that chill even now, and later when I watched the scene in the movie it felt like ice water in my veins. What delicious terror!

I agree, too. I anticipated every cheesy, predictable stunt ... except the cheap, ratty “Basement Monster” costume. (NF didn’t waste any $$ on wardrobe.) Sooo predictable (sigh). If you haven’t read the book, make it your October 2019 late night read. If you have read it and aren’t ready to revisit it just yet, try listening to the KZbin audio. It’s well done, more or less, even though the actor reads Eleanor as if she’s angry all the time. I enjoyed it

The 1963 version of The Haunting, based on Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House is a true classic in every sense of the word. It remains faithful to Shirley Jackson's brilliant novel, and it is a very powerful tale of the supernatural. The discerning will still be chilled to the core by this movie for many years to come. Every aspect of it conspires to generate a very real sense of a terrible darkness, malevolence and malice. Robert wise's masterly direction, the cinematography, the pacing, the excellent acting from the distinguished cast, the creepy sound effects, Humphrey Searle's imposing music score, the Gothic location and elaborate sets, everything. Even that it was shot in black and white, the stark imagery is very atmospheric. The evil that dwells in Hill House is the house itself, it is alive, waiting patiently to enslave and assimilate its victims. Then their restless souls are condemned to wander the dark recesses of the house forever. Very dark, and utterly chilling, this is without a doubt my favourite film and tale of the supernatural. It is a genuinely creepy film and I highly recommend it.

Chris Thornley Your description is a little horror masterpiece in itself. ;o)
@JayDillon-mm6yv5 жыл бұрын
I think part of the reason it really grips people is that it is centered on the investigation into the house, to see if the "haunting" is a real thing or not! And by the end of the first third of the movie, you're pretty darn sure it is a real thing, even though there are several skeptics among the "investigator" characters. I really like the casting of this film, Julie Harris was just ideal, with that interior monologue from the very first part of the film where she's heading off into the unknown... Just as creepy as all get-out. I saw it in an old theater in Connecticut in 1963 or 1964 soon after it first came out, and it remains one of the most intense movie experiences of my life. I still love supernatural suspense/horror films and all sorts of stuff in that general line, but they have to be well done and "believable." "The Haunting of Hill House" from 1963 creeped me out permanently, it's the standard by which I judge a lot of the newer stuff, just that intense feeling of being in the movie, feeling what the characters feel and not being sure exactly who it was who was holding my hand.....

Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." "The Haunting," based on the Gothic horror classic, "The Haunting of Hill House," is simply the greatest single ghost movie of all time... period. This is due to three things: Story, casting, and the inspired direction of the great Robert Wise, who "wisely" decided to shoot the film in B&W as opposed to the more popular, color. Along with the incredible cinematography, it lended a spooky atmosphere to the picture that really made it stand out from the masses. But if your'e looking for a frightening, blood dripping ghost, you won't. You don't actually see a thing, which makes this movie such an enduring masterpiece of supernatural terror.
@christhornley166410 жыл бұрын
I totally agree! The 1963 Robert Wise production of The Haunting is the ultimate haunted house movie. No horror film old or new comes close to it in my mind, and I feel it's never had the full recognition it truly deserves. This is a genuinely creepy film from beginning to end. The casting and acting. The great cinematography. The sound effects and music, and the fabulous Gothic location make this film a masterpiece of its kind in every way. It's so dark and powerful because you never actually see the malevolent force that dwells in the house. It relies mostly on the watchers imagination. An absolute classic and truly scary!

I read the original Shirley Jackson book "The Haunting of Hill House" and it was terrific. Ms Jackson's other works are worth reading if you haven't ever done so. Her short story "The Lottery" will make you think twice before ever choosing lots with a group if people. The approaching of the carriage in the beginning always comes to mind when I drive from the Gatehouse at the Biltmore estate in Asheville, NC. As it gives nearly the same impression and one wonders how the Vanderbilt's felt driving it in carriages back in 1896.

Stephen King wrote admirably about the above paragraph: "I want to point out how MANY things this single paragraph does: It suggests Hill House is a living organism; tells us that this live organism does not exist under conditions of absolute reality; that because...it does not dream, it is not sane. The paragraph tells us how long its history has been, immediately establishing that historical context that is so important to the haunted-house story, and concludes by telling us that SOMETHING walks in the rooms and halls of Hill House. All of this in two sentences!" (from "Danse Macabre," by S. King, published 1981)

Favorite horror movie of all time. Prefer suspense rather than in your face horror.

What was scary for me was the big doors bulging in and out in the library when they were all in there .

'70 or '71, 7 or 8 years old, stayed up late alone after everyone else turned in. This movie terrified me! I loved it!

I've been listening to "Astro Creep 2000" by White Zombie lately. It features a voice clip from "The Haunting."

Robert Wise edited for Orson Welles. There are little dedications to Kane in the way this was filmed. It really behaves more like a Welles film....almost anything black and white made during this time was meant to scare you...and if you were 13 years old, it succeeded.

Had nightmares about this movie, especially my being somehow trapped in the house itself, well into my 50's. Scariest darn movie ever.

This was the first horror film I ever watched. Was pretty scary!! After watching the trailer it's cool to see the Netflix series follow it so well.

Definitely. I know a lot of people my age (late teens-early twenties) that know and love this movie. We pretty much only found out about it because of the remake that most people hated.

I saw this in TV in the late 1960's, I still think its very scarey without the white figures! I think its one of the best of this type of movie. I also read the book, back then, but it was one of those old "Readersdigest Books" so it was a bit edited, still it was good!

What's surprising is that this is a "G" rated horror film.

I have yet to watch a haunted house film that is as spooky as this. I find that remarkable.

The wallpaper scene freaks me the most . Reminded me of when I was driving across the Isle of Wight around midnight once and the moon was out. It was highlighting what seemed to be faces in the clouds. I couldn’t wait to get home ....

The movie is a psychological horror so the fear comes from not seeing what's there as well as trying to figure out what is there and what is in the main character's mind. If only current horror movies did this.
