As a blind person I can listen to these stories and still understand them without actually seeing the pictures that go with them thanks this means a lot to someone who can’t see and who loves history

I saw a telivision series shown over here (live in the UK), which was a dramatisation of the Franklin expedition. With a side story about a mythical beast. However In the series the crew were always getting sick and dying, it was later found out that the cans of meat was responsible because they contained elements of lead. If anyone's interested the series which was called 'The Terror' and starred Ciaren Hines, it was on BBC over here should think you could get it online.........................

As a point of interest, for any Rock music fans out there, the British metal band *Iron Maiden* wrote a song about the ill fated Franklin expedition; the song is called *Stranger in a strange land*

Such a tragic case! I hadn't heard the ghost side of it--thank you for that. The biggest tragedy was that Captain Franklin, to avoid the near starvation of the last expedition, had stocked up on a then-new invention: canned food. So new, in fact, that the manufacturers had not yet worked out all of the problems, and still soldered the cans with lead. Experiments had shown that the lead wouldn't leak into food under normal conditions, but something about the chemistry of salt air and cold (I don't remember what; I'm no chemist) caused the food to give the captain and crew a massive lead overdose. They went mad and became disoriented. When they abandoned ship, they left behind all sorts of survival necessities, but brought with them strange and needlessly inconvenient objects like curtain rods and furniture.

@@evilspirit1329 Well, I must say you're more imaginative than most internet creeps! But I am way too happy with my husband of 37 years to take you up on your kind offer. He is unconventional like me, witty, kind, warm and has my back no matter what, and doesn't care that I'm no longer beautiful--and he is not evil. I am so much happier with him than I was before I met him. But don't worry--somewhere out there is a graveyard dancer who's just right for you!

The ships had a brand new water desalinization system. It had lead piping. The water picked up a lot of lead. Ask a Mortician does a morbid minute about the Franklin expedition that goes into more detail than I can remember.

You should read frozen in time which explains why they crew of the Franklin exhibition died and how they exhumed the 3 graves for post mortem there is also a documentary on it too here on KZbin which is really interesting as it shows them exhuming them and how they did the post mortem on the bodies and why they died. The place was still untouched and they found the food cans from the ship and other items from the ship mates including some of their bones.

Possibly, but I suspect it becomes an addiction. Similar to mountaineering for some. That said, maybe there was more likelihood of dying from another cause on land in Britain than on a well planned expedition at sea.

His wife must have loved him very much to go to so much work and expense. Very sad ending. It isn't surprising they would have felt they had to deny anything supernatural. It could have been construed as witchcraft, a serious criminal offence.
