While that tall ghost was honestly terrifying, the scariest part for me was wondering if Luke would relapse in this episode. My heart couldn’t take that. The young actor for him is the cutest little thing with his huge glasses. I just want to hug both versions of Luke. Poor Luke was feeling Nell go into Rigor Mortis.

Anyone else notice that Nell's ghost showed up in Luke's rehab center within less than a minute after what we're assuming to be when she died? My thought at that part was, of course she would appear to her twin before appearing anyone else!

Contrary to many other commenters, I think it's much better to not even think about the ghosts hidden in the background while watching this show. It's much scarier when, five minutes into a scene, you unexpectedly spot a figure standing in the background, and realize that they've been standing there, staring at the camera for the past five minutes

It's absolutely better if you don't know they're present and exactly where to look for them. Seeing something out of the corner of your eye, or this unsettling feeling of someone watching without knowing where they are adds this sense of dread and atmosphere to those scenes. Look for the ghosts on the second watch.

Matthew Hayes yeah, I didn't notice any of them the first time around because I was so hyper focused on the action of the characters. Even the 2nd time through, I only managed to catch the most obvious ones because I knew they were there, I was still so focused on the characters lol

Agreed. Spotting the hidden ghosts is something to do when re-watching the show. But not during the first viewing, it's better to focus on the characters and story.

This is just common sense. Expecting reactors to know or care about every little detail is just KZbin brainrot. "Did you know that when Leonardo DiCaprio kicked the helmet after losing the hobbits, he actually deflected a broken glass that was coming straight for his head? The hidden ghosts are not meant to be seen, that is why they are hidden. Maybe they are put there by the makers of the show to be noticed by the audience unconsciously to create a spooky feeling without knowing where it comes from. Or maybe they are like a metaphore for "real" ghosts who are just things we think we see in the dark.

this episode makes me so sad, it's super scary but i just feel so sad for luke... the house messed him up so much that it drove him to drugs and then when he works to get himself clean everyone screws him over and his sister dies which he can feel!!!!!!! :-(

The ghost that kept following Luke was a physical metaphor for his addiction. Something that was always lurking. Despite Luke's best efforts to keep it far away, the more stressed, the more down on his luck he became during the episode, the closer the ghost in the hat got to him. Up until Steven finally arrived, Luke was on the brink of relapsing.

I love that when Steve shows up to tell Luke that Nell is dead, Luke is talking about how he is cold and his arms and legs are stiff. Right around the time when Nells body would be cold and in Rigor Mortis. I can't wait until you watch episode 5!

With the twin thing they have you can easily see that Luke feels Nells dying body. His arms and body are cold (her body is cold), he is getting stiff (her body is entering rigor mortis) and he can feel it just like she felt his broken leg years before.

one of the reasons i love this show so much is that while it's so damn creepy, it's also so damn real. as someone who has lived with a heroin addict i can say that this show is so on point with things. it's so difficult when someone you love is an addict, when you try to help them over and over and over and really you're only waiting for the day they decide to help themselves.

That part when he's giving his 90 day speech and it cuts to the scenes of the tall man stalking him, you'd think it's scary, but it's sad. I teared up watching as he tried to walk away from it 7 paces at a time, and it continued to stalk him, just like that threat of relapse is always there.

I always intetpreted Luke's ghost outside of the house as addiction. Always there, faceless, following at a distance, getting closer every time you notice it. That's why the House ghost is so stretched and outside isn't. Out of the house, it's just Luke's memory of the ghost that his addiction has co-opted.

I believe his ghosts are both real and symbolic but I do believe he was haunted outside of the house as well and sometimes yes haunted by himself and his own addiction he applied his own ghosts to give that addiction a face but the ghost was still real initially. Just like Nell's was. It's a twin thing. Luke has also seen multiple ghosts. I think maybe more than the other kids, even Nell.

Stop reading if you aren't finished with the series) but I think that the confusion or interpretations the viewer can make are the best things about this show. By the time we get to the conclusion we are given all of these options, We are left guessing and not always able to decipher the real from the fake, the dreams from reality... they do a fantastic job of showing how things became so indecipherable that someone could lose all perspective on reality. This really is a horror story masterpiece.

I like your discussion on what exactly the ghost is! The way I see it, and the way I think Mike Flanagan writes, is that the horror in his stories are both real AND metaphor. Yes, Luke is being literally haunted by the Tall Man, but the Tall Man is equally a symbol of his childhood trauma and his addiction. Just like you'll see with other ghosts in the series like the Bent Neck Lady. They are both an actual remnant of a deceased person, and a representation of the darkness in the lives of the Crain family

It looks to me like their mother is calling them back to the house. If the mom died in the house and Nell died in the house I'm pretty sure that's the reason why I Luke is getting scared again. It's getting really scary good can't wait. Excellent choice not to search to background ghosts. Focus on enjoying (ha) the action of the real story. Hell, I was so focused on the main character interactions that I missed at least one background ghost I was probably supposed to actually notice! The story is so engaging, you don't want those unnecessary distractions. There are vids you can find online when you're done that will point them out for you. Could be a nice follow up reaction to the series. Hope Steven's arm survives the rest of what's to come!

"His addiction following him", I think you got it right. And since he was a child.. the ghost he sees, he floats, his feet doesnt touch the floor... "the man is high"... and he takes what? The big man hat, that one that helps you to distinguish reality from imaginary. After that, Luke cant tell whats real, whats not, and then, uising drugs to run away from his problems.... its all reall, or all imaginary, doesnt matter... The ghost haunting him on the streets, is the adiction, the need for another shoot, the need for a new escape from the real world... also, the hats kills the imaginary friend, and recall nobody believes Luke whemn he is a kid? The guy fells lone. Thats why he handt runt away from this re=hab clinic, like he did in the others: he found a friend there, Joey, and she is real, she is helping him. She, while his family preffers to make him fell like shit, like Steven did, so they can have something to compalin about life "oh, I have a brother who is addicted, who steals money from me"... but that is cool, cos this way they have the power. With Luke good and independent, they have no power... They say this over and over again in the past episodes. Luke will come back when he needs money, I paid your clinic Luke, and so on... And when he lost his friend, he run form the clinic, look for her, she betrays him.. and he now is all by himself, haunted, alone, beated, and even then he didnt used drugs: you know then he is cured. He wants to live. Thats what this episode is about, and yes, sometimes, the wish to live is even scarier than the wish to die (like Nell one). It requires to be a real brave when you want to live, when you decide to, when you choose life despite of all pain and things and shit you will get with it. Its hard, and its scary, but its the right thing to do, cos in death, its game over, its nothing. Grett reactions. Congratz.

•listen, when you lot started watching this I had only watched the 1st ep & 1/2 of the 2nd. After seeing the Theo ep via your reaction, I went back and watched “Touch” to 1/2 way thru the last episode. TBH, I’m not sure if I even made it to the last. When it’s all said and done, I found the story more creepy/sad than scary. At this point, (having finished Luke’s episode) what did I need? I needed a Nell episode, I needed to know why Nell went back to the house and how she died, & I needed to know what happened THAT night w/the mom. Cool story about this show. I remember when it came out and it was SUPER popular, but I HATE scary shows, movies, etc so I did not watch it. Well recently this week they were talking about it at work and how good it is so I said I guess I will go watch that. Started it and am up to episode 5. I like it but also HATE HATE HATE every minute of it. However, I am getting the feeling that I have already watched this. I know I have. There are moments I remember vividly but then I can't remember other moments. But I am already re-invested and cannot stop watching because I need to know what is going on. So I will have experienced this mess TWICE. I must have blocked this out of my memory originally because it scarred me or something. Also, my reactions during this show are identical to Nikki lol

Can't wait to see more of your reactions. Episodes 5 and 6 are crazy. I love this show so much. I think Theo and Nell are my favorites, then Luke. The kid actors are amazing though. So adorable and they really cast them well to look like the adult counterparts.
