Thanks for bringing up the intersectionality about Anthy's character, it's not often deeply discussed when it comes up in essays.

This video and Revolutionary Girl Utena in general are so underrated. I feel like everyone should watch Utena at least once, it’s such an important show and deserves to be talked about more.

I do wanna say, although it was just kinda a one-off line 😅, that Saionji is never coded as a prince in the show because he doesn't conform to the western masculinity embodied by the prince archetype. His masculinity is distinctly japanese and is one of the many reasons he's separated from the other male characters (although he does get princess coding, but for diff reasons). Loved this video though, I think a lot about the intersection between Anthy's race and gender and its role in the story so i love seeing ppl talk abt it

I just finished rewatching Utena for the 4th time, going through a watch party with friends and my partner. Every single time I spend hours analysing the show and discover not only something new within the show, but also about society, humanity and myself. I love this show so much, it helped me grow as a person when I was a teen. In another few years I'll rewatch it again, because no matter how many decades pass, this show is timelessly relevant.

I first watched it at 14 and it, no pun intended, revolutionized me. I don't usually rewatch much even if I really liked it but I've lost count of the amount of times I've rewatched RGU. And you're so right about how you discover another layer of it to analyse each time you watch it!

Incredible breakdown. This video perfectly encapsulates why RGU ments sm to me in my teen years. The way Shoujo explored gender identity helped me to come to terms with facets of my own gender identity i didn't understand yet. Now I identify what as genderfluid. But when i was little I always called my self a tomboy and would get excited when i saw tomboy characters in cartoons. But there was always something off. Thoninrelated to having a more masculine attire and more stereotypical interest. I had feminine side. Not only that but i honestly adored feminity as a whole. But i always felt like i had to renounce it to fit into the tomboy box i had jammed myself into. The tomboys i always saw hated anything, and were rude and abrasive. Which wasn't me but i gmfelt like i had to be tgat way or else i didn't know who or what i was. Just someone who failed be. It was characters like Utena and Lady Oscar that gave me the will to stop lying to myself. I connected sm with Utena a more masculine presenting girl, who didn't fully reject her feminity. If anything her feminity was one of the most important parts of her character. It showed me that could be my more masculine self without having to deny girly side. I finally felt free to be feminine. I also related a lot to anthy. As a dark skinned girl. I was always made to feel it was better to be docile and except mistreatment. Because the pain of being antagonized for speaking up was just too much to take at times.

this show triggered me so badly that i had to pause it for a whole month before watching it again, im a brown person and the abuse anthy was subjected to hit way too close to home. i’m very glad you talked about this because many people who talked about the show kinda glossed over it when it’s (in my opinion) the biggest part of anthy’s character
@queenlolo13842 күн бұрын
That's the reason I dropped it the first time, before picking it back up. I hate how Anthy just got slapped around. Even though I ultimately do like Wakaba, I did have to side eye that comment of hers "Saionji would never be with a girl like *her*".
@lamplol71202 күн бұрын
@ yea i hated it too but im glad the show included these things because they’re very much real! i would be more careful about recommending the show to others though because i went into it VERY blind, all i knew was “lesbian shoujo anime with cute art style” so i was not mentally ready for it at all💀

Being one of my formative anime influences, I've seen and read lots of analyses and summaries of RGU, but I believe this is the first time I've heard mentioned the intersectionality aspect of Anthy's abuse, so thanks a lot for pointing it out and adding another layer of analysis and understanding to one of my favorite animes 💕🌹

I love seeing new Utena analyses so long after the series ended. Interesting stuff :) I like your takes on the gender performances Utena and Anthy put on. You highlight a lot of stuff I don't see brought up as much, such as the way Utena balances both masculinity and femininity. She never spurns either, but whenever someone tries to box her into a strict category she rebels. Revolts. And at least in the spaces I've frequented, I haven't met anybody else who interprets her as bi. I always read her attraction to men as genuine, even if she blows it up it to such a point that it veers into comphet. As a bi person myself, people always painted my attraction to the opposite sex as "easier," and that I should just date them as opposed to people of the same or other genders. It was a kind of comphet that tries to justify its bigotry with a kernel of truth. I'm so excited to see younger generations finding this show/movie :)

ikuhara calls utena (and anthy) a lesbian in an interview. i believe the way it is meant to be interpreted is compulsory heterosexuality rather than her truly being attracted to men (no hate to you of course i dont think this is readily available information) edit : you can find segments of this interview on youtube if you look up ikuhara utena interview

I am glad you covered the intersexuality, though I am white, but I like trying understand those issues better. I do read Utena as bi with a strong preference for Anthy. But then again, I am bi. I can't tell if Anthy is attracted to anyone besides Utena, so maybe she's demi. Akito is absolutely a groomer and manipulator to the children and residents of the academy of all genders. I have no clue what his biological age is suposed to be. I just know he's supposed to be a youngish adult. I do not consider Anthy completely blameless, either though. The start of all of this is of course neither hers nor Dios's fault, just the unrealistic expectation and ideal. She does become complicit though, and she also seemed to have an agenda of her own separate from Akito. However, Akito's everything is far worse than her and she is absolutely also a victim! And Dios was a victim too that tragically became Akito who is so horrible. There are several interpretations of them, and love dissecting each of them. Anyways thanks for the analysis, and you have a new subscriber!

From the manga, it's said that students do have the ability to customize their uniforms (although it's frowned upon), so I assume it may be the same for the anime
