YES! One of the most iconic horror moments ever. I was actually enraptured by the original (even though I saw the remake as a kid and literally laughed through the entire thing … sorry Ryan!) when I watched it the first time as an adult. It takes you on a beautiful, creepy, and unexpected ride if you let it.

I always appreciate the nuanced opinions Ryan gives. There's definitely too many "thing bad" videos that don't really consider the merits in flawed works. I kind of miss films like this, since it really feels like all media has to be commenting on something or lean into hyper-realism to the point where it's just dull. Malignant is the only horror movie in recent memory to go back to the bombast of the 90s/early00s and man was that refreshing.
@shoesncheese
@shoesncheese 2 жыл бұрын
Too true. It's easy to jump on the bandwagon of "thing bad" because the algorithm seems to like that sort of content. I prefer this sort of content, because it's more realistic. Often times a movie isn't the worst thing ever or the best thing ever it's just kind of okay. And that's fine. Sometimes that's all you need. And Ryan delivers.
@DeepEye1994

I'm ok with "I actually like this" videos when it's just a person wording their opinion well like Ryan usually does, as opposed idiots that have inconsistent standards, vomit nonsense buzzwords to look deep, reject basic storytelling concepts such as believable plot progression "because it's ART!!!" while they're literally talking down to their audience and preaching about not imposing opinions on others while literally doing just that. Ryan is a guy explaining his opinion and he respects the intelligence of the viewer, he's not an insecure dumbass who is salty that their shit tastes aren't being validated. They're just another type of toxic, and they just ruin my day when I make the mistake of watching their trash content.

Oh, I love the 1999 movie. I really, unironically do. The house is so beautiful and horrifying because of its beauty. The house is totally a character on itself. I wish I could visit that house and at the same time I'm so repelled by it. And there is so much I adore about Nell and Theo as characters, too. I don't care if it's good or bad, I simply adore the movie. When I later read the novel I was torn between loving the portrayal of Nell's state of mind and missing the house and the supernatural elements. But yeah, I learned to appreciate it too.
@shoesncheese
@shoesncheese 2 жыл бұрын
I thought all the CGI in The Haunting was entirely appropriate. This and the remake of House on Haunted Hill both managed to turn a house into a believable antagonist. I think The Haunting did it better in a way because you have the character of Nell who feels a closeness to the house in a familial way. In House on Haunted Hill, everybody hates the house and wants to get out; nobody is working to save it. I remembered Liam Neeson. I remembered Catherine Zeta Jones. I remembered Lili Taylor. I forgot Owen Wilson was in the movie. I thought it was Liam Neeson who "lost his head".

It's one of those instances where the unnatural, uncanny look of early 2000's CGI was actually used to the film's benefit. Because you're using it to portray spirits, ghosts, and impossible realities. Of course those would look unnatural and uncanny. The bedpost children coming to life is a great example. They look horrifying, in no small part due to the creepy CGI animating them. But it absolutely works.

Loving your videos! I highly recommend the book; the best scene imo has never been adapted and it's towards the end with Nell drifting into a daydream that, since it's from her perspective, really throws you out of reality in the most disconcerting way before another character screams and grabs onto her to run away, leaving you so rattled from the unknown. I love the 99 version if only for a laugh, but feel really sort of bad for the cast; they all are so good just like, when the script's big twist is the ultra cliche "she's really the long lost great great descendant :O" I can't help but feel myself die a little inside. The creepiest part is genuinely that face-morph CGI in the ballroom, and it's meant to be more endearing like she belongs there.

I accidentally cached this movie on a late night as a child and I never forgot about it (even though I hade no idea about the title back then so when tried searching for it I just came across a bunch of other haunted mansion movies). To an adult the effects might not look good, but they blew my mind as a child. And even watching this video now, I love those statues of the kids moving it's just so uncanny. I suspect that this was the movie that made me love creepy statues in general.

Not gonna lie, miss the aesthetic of campy 90s horror. It's like they really try to make something but technology just isn't where it needs to be at the time or at least it's not applied effectively. They felt more genuine. Meanwhile the Batman was a better Saw sequel than Spiral, Leatherface from Mortal Kombat/DBD got a movie, and here I am playing World of Horror longing for Asian European fusion spooks.

You'd love Shirley Jackson's novel! It is one of the few books in this world that actually frightened me. It's less that Jackson denies the house is haunted and more that she doesn't necessarily explain what the haunting might look like. In one amazing scene, the main characters begin screaming and running from something behind them...but Jackson never tells us why. It's so chilling! She is an absolute master of horror, mass hysteria and female paranoia. There were also STRONG lesbian undertones throughout the book, and I'm still waiting for someone to film a version that does justice to it. I enjoyed Mike Flanagan's series of the same name, but it really had nothing to do with the book other than the characters' names.

The 1963 version will forever be a favorite of mine. The scares in it are more effective to me because they don't so much show you what to be afraid of, but rather makes you question what to be afraid of (and in some cases who to be afraid of or even for), such as the mysterious hand Eleanor was holding to the camera effects used to give those rapid fall shots. Plus, I also like the sense of leaving it open for interpretation, as was mentioned in the video: is it truly haunted, or is it all just the inner turmoil and guilt within Eleanor manifesting itself into reality? It all depends on how you see it. (Personally, I think it's both) BTW I also highly recommend the book if no one has read it. Definitely give it a read or a listen (if you prefer audiobooks)

@jogeller5731

This movie barely made a passing impression on 11 year old me but it did get me in two spots. First was accidentally developing a crush on Owen Wilson. The second one was getting nightmares from the scene with the mirrors where Eleanor sees herself as pregnant because, and maybe it's a hysteric womanly thing, but pregnancy horror really freaks me out, and the ending maybe have been sweet and fine but certainly felt bad and stupid for an 11 year old who disliked how these dead children just swooped up a woman who had nothing to do with their plight and had already been used all her life as a caretaker and was never really allowed to be a person before a nurse, and decided She Was Their Mom Now. Brrr. The real horror is people deciding you've got to be a mother figure because you're a woman and you have empathy for people. I mean yes I know Eleanor is happy by the end, I'm just speaking to the accidental horror it inspired in me as a child.

Watched this after reading the book and had no idea it was going to go all in on the ghosts. The first half of the movie has most of the supernatural events being noticed by Ellenor. And only a few other events happened around other characters and the characters never acknowledged or interacted with the event so I was still under the impression it was going to play out the "Ghosts or Crazy" narrative. And then about half way in, Liam Neeson gets grabbed by a statue and almost drowns and I was completely caught off guard. I enjoy the movie greatly purely for the moment when I realized they were going all in.

First seen the movie when I was 9 and it's been a favourite ever since (Even though its flaws are far more obvious to me now.) The set design I think gave me an appreciation for architecture at a young age, and when it comes to that aspect The Haunting '99 is basically the Home Alone of horror films. The exterior shots of the Harlaxton Manor too *Chefs kiss* For better or worse the Manor is now a College, but I'd definitely like to tour the grounds one day.

On the topic of modern haunted house movies, I sincerely cannot recommend The Night House enough. Growing up with the supernatural movies of the 90s and 2000s, I was never really a fan of haunted house movies in the traditional ghost sense. However The Night House, the original Haunting Of Hill House, and Anatomy by Kittyhorrorshow have made me absolutely fall in love in with haunted house genre in how they approach it from the angle of the house itself being something older than all of us and a character in its own right. While I can't say much about The Night House without spoiling it, I really recommend going into without watching trailers. The discussion and visualization of what comes after death in the movie is really special to me.

Lili Taylor is an absolute gem and transcends whatever material is thrown at her. Event when its shite. In the OG Haunting the actress that played Eleanor was herself suffering from a prolonged bout of depression during filming, which god bless her she managed to channel completely into the performance and that, along with the camera work, set, sound design and pure vibe, makes it still a genuinely unsettling watch, for me anyway.

As always I'm interested in these videos because you have a very different perspective on a lot of these. The whole point of Shirley Jackson's original story was the idea that a place could just be evil, without any reason like because it's over a burial ground or something. There's no particular reason for Hillhouse to be evil it just is. Stephen King like that concept and that's when he did The Shining. As for Owen Wilson, I always got the impression that all of the characters in the movie we're all supposed to be variations on a theme of just not caring very much for the main character. They couldn't go with the possible mystery of whether or not she was actually crazy because they made it overly obvious that the house was haunted. So instead I always saw the movie is more of a character study. To that end, Owen Wilson was just inadvertently hurtful. Someone who isn't trying to be a jerk, they just don't care enough about other people's feelings. I do think you hit the nail on the head though, that him being put into the movie was similar to Matthew Lillard and Chris Kattan in that they were trying to inject a sense of snarky humor just doesn't fit him. As for the movie in general, I've never understood why people took such an active dislike to it. It's a fun fantasy horror movie. The CGI isn't atrocious, it just gets a little overwrought by the end. Once I realized it wasn't going to be similar to the novel or the original film, I was actually very interested in seeing where it was going. You also got me really interested when you mentioned that Stephen King was originally tapped to this, and that he eventually turned it into Rose Red. I always thought that that was his way of adapting the story of the Winchester House, which might have still been an inspiration.

Definitely love rewatching both Thirteen Ghosts and The Haunting, really neat you've done a video on both now. I been looking for a movie I recall my family renting one night in the late 90s early 2000s, I keep getting thrown off its trail thinking it was called the Boogeyman but that leads down towards Stephen King's movie from 1980 or the 2005 movie that was definitely too new to be it. It was a 2 in one movie rental on vhs, probably not an international release and it had a scene very much like the scene featured in this video from A Nightmare on Elm Street except it did consume the person it was reaching for and I remember it spooked me so good as a kid that the cgi in this The Haunting put me on edge. I been trying to find this movie for years and pretty convinced I just merged all the unsettling cgi in early 2000s movies into one unsettling scene. Death by wall suffocation been a weird layer of spook on my brain all these years.

I prefer the original to the remake. In fact I really love the original and how it slowly builds tension and uses camera angles to trick the viewer into thinking they've seen the statues moving. We must thank Joel silver for a great idea, shame it didn't last longer. There was still a huge amount of old films he could have remade. I enjoyed them all EXCEPT the hills run red. The he did the apparition after I think that prob helped in killing them off..bad decision. I'm sure the apparition and the quiet ones were connected in some way where the script for one was seen and either rejected or taken up by rival studio with more money and the others without it decided to make their own version..I've seen this a lot in the horror genre. Two films virtually identical released the same year. Now if it was the next yr u could say it was inspired by but when they both released same year it's obvious some shinnanigans gone off.

I saw the remake when I was around 10, and I liked your point of it being between a kids supernatural fantasy and an adult drama. It fit perfectly for me as an edgy, Tim Burton obsessed preteen that was ready for something a little more mature without being horrific. And while the CGI effects are somewhat cartoon-like, I feel that style made the movie feel more like a gothic serial drama, like the Dark Shadows show (not the Johnny Depp movie), with how those shows often had smoke and mirrors effects that were easy to see through. I disagree with you saying Thirteen Ghost is more of a true horror, though. While its ghost designs are more gruesome, I don't think they linger long enough for the finer details to sink in for a younger audience. I saw Thirteen Ghosts when I was 12, and again, it was perfect for a preteen that was fully in their dark and brooding era, especially with Matthew Lillard's charisma acting as something to latch onto in order to not get too spooked.

I would love to see you cover the movie 'Devil' 2010 I recently re-watched it and for a 2010 movie, it's genuinely very well done. The whole concept of the story taking place in just one lift/elevator is very interesting. Would love to hear your thoughts on it

Ah yes, the movie where the mexican fat guy throws a piece of toast on the ground, it falls jelly side down and thus "AHA! It's the sign that the Devil is around, because bad stuff like that happens!" ... The piece of toast still fell on the ground and got dirty, would he fucking pick it up EAT that if it DIDN'T fall jelly side down? I dunno, it's as stupid as saying "I'm gonna throw this coin on the ground, if it come out heads instead of tails, which is what I want, then the Devil is active!" I remember thinking it was silly trash and I avoided hate-watching it when I stopped taking it seriously. Ryan would have to do some heavy work to polish it IF he likes it.

Huh, I always thought the professor was doing a psychiatric observation on the “mentally fragile” volunteers, seeing how they would react to the house. But the professor himself didn’t believe in the supernatural. Idk maybe I was drinking too much when I watched.

Here's my take: I didn't want a lot of old black and white films, up until recent years, they would give me a headache and it also wasn't the genre of black and white that my mom liked. So I have no frame of reference for a lot of old old school horror movies and the ones I have seen, were boring to me (sorry not sorry lol), however, I loved and still love this movie. I don't care how bad the CGI was, how horribly panned it was, it's a part of my childhood and I love it. Same goes for many of the other horror remakes you mentioned in this film. I love them and I'm not ashamed to say so. And because I won't stop till you cover it, please do Ginger Snaps. Please and thank you.

I’ve never seen the remake! I grew up with the 1963 version & read the book in high school but now I gotta watch the remake cuz it looks stupid fun. It’s a weird little gem of a book. I always thought it could make a great like found footage horror film if played extremely straight more in the lane of Lake Mungo because at the end of the day it’s an unsettling character drama more than spook fest.

Man, I remember seeing this one in the theater with my friends in high school. I was a wannabe film snob at the time, so seeing Lily Taylor in a big budget movie made me really happy. Indie film queen made good. I think the wire snapping scene was truly well done and set up an expectation that this place could get brutal. Then it became this bizarre CGI roller-coaster. the whole theatre was cracking up at a lot of the "scares". At the time I was really let down. I think I would have more fun with the movie now and just accept it for what it was. As for guilty pleasure movies : Howard the Duck. I know its bad, but I saw it so young that its etched in there and I get stupidly happy if I see it on.

Howard the Duck is fun, though I find it more enjoyable when the second and third act abandon the jarring adult humor and it just becomes a silly adventure.

Production value and art design was actually really spectacular. It was the CGI big time that ruined it for me. It’s just inexcusable, I can’t do it. I went to see this in the theater expecting to get scared. Mind you, I hadn’t even watched the original and vaguely even knew of the story. I like the original and Mike Flanagan’s take on the material is probably my favorite ghost story ever.
