The BAR is an American Classic and will always have a special place in the history of US Military small arms- it's ruggedness and reliability are legendary. Thanks to the good folks at Ohio Ordnance Works this piece of history is preserved for law abiding gun owners to enjoy and pass down to future generations . For those that love the latest and greatest OOW has launched the HCAR - an updated version of the BAR that brings the warhorse into the 21st Century. Enjoy

I am looking at that HCAR and from an aesthetic point of view, it's a beautiful gun. However, I doubt it could be as practical as an m-4 or a g-36 in actual combat. It looks big and clumsy, way less manueverable.

M1918A2 BAR had either 300-450 or 500-650 rounds/min rates of fire you could switch between. It's not too often where you see a weapon, let alone LMG platform that can double its cyclic rate with the flip of a switch.

In my opinion using the M193 5.56 round is a better idea than use a HCAR because that round messed up those that got shot by it and you still have low recoil, high muzzle velocity, higher ammo capacity. That is just my preference, if you would need to do medium to long range combat and deal with urban environments then I would prefer a HCAR. I am assuming you have been issued a M16A2 with M855. +Luis Maiocchi depends where you are at really. The 30 06 would certainly do better at penetrating material. Many places that would count as cover against m193 would be considered concealment against 30 06

The original BAR is really heavy. I guess this modernised HCAR uses more composite and polymer parts to reduce that because it’s to the point where the weapon is impractical

So I'm a complete noob, but what's the difference between a 30.06 and a .308 in terms of accuracy, range and power? I always figured they were basically the same.

They basically are. The .308 is an evolution of the .30-06 designed to give similar power in a smaller package to work in smaller weapons (BAR vs M60). The big improvement of the .308 over the .30-06 was a different powder, allowing for a shorter (yet slightly wider) case with similar velocity. The other big improvement was a boat tail bullet design for the .308, making it 'more accurate', though, that can be disregarded since modern bullet shapes can be found in both cartridges.

The BAR is truly a very sturdy rifle. It has only two downsides- its. Very heavy (19.5 pounds) , and limited ammo in the mag.

I think what killed that was when he went to work for Belgium. Not entirely patriotic. That being said, it was Winchester who let him go in the first place, and bad luck with Remington made him unemployed for a while so I can kind of get him looking to sell his shotgun and other designs with whoever would pay for it to put food on the table. I still wish that in an alternate history Browning could have waited out for Remington.

Actually, three infantryman with BAR's held off an entire battalion of German ss. The 30.06 had the range and power to reach out and touch someone. Just ask Bonnie and Clyde.

A relative of mine was an Army infantryman in the Korean War, saw a ton of combat. He spoke of BARs being valued a great deal for flank security for medium .30-caliber MGs and also for the big Browning 50HBs. Also counter-sniper use. It's pretty impressive that three BAR men held off an entire battalion of Waffen-SS, since the BAR is an automatic rifle and not a true machine-gun, in the sense that it lacks a quick-change barrel or the ability to feed from belted/linked ammo. Tremendous weapon - years ahead of its time in 1918 - and viable for decades after that well into the Cold War era.

I'm really impressed by the HCAR. I would like to see a few changes for my taste, though. I'll like the picatinny rail to go all the way across the receiver. I rather have an 18" barrel. Not sure if its possible, but the receiver being cut for (unmodified) AR style grips would be nice. And lastly the receiver seems to need bullet deflector. In spite of all that, its REALLY tempting to get a modern take on the classic BAR. Nice job OOW.

***** That's what happens when you're basically buying one off guns from a moderately small company doing highend customs. AR15s are mass produced by shitloads of companies with all common off the shelf parts you can get anywhere, thus they're pretty damn cheap to build. You want to build an AR to the standard these are made to, and you're going to end up well over $2500. Under $10k and it shouldn't be out of the reach of most people. Just start saving and stop pretending that you can have something "just as good" for less money. I bet most gun owners have more than $10k tied up in their collection.

@@독도는한국땅-n2o .458 socom has a max pressure of roughly 35,000 psi. The 30-06 has a max pressure of roughly 58,000 psi. The HCAR could more than handle .458 socom, but given that the 30-06 has somewhere between 4-600 ft/lbs more muzzle energy, and significantly superior external ballistics, I don't know why you would want to make that switch. .458 socom is also more expensive.

@@fnkdtnk I believe what he meant by the gas pressure just won't work is that the gas blow back system use to cycle the bolt won't have enough pressure to push it into cycling the bolt with the .458 socom, making the gun a bolt action rifle instead. Rifles are a delicate system.

@@manhphuc4335 going from higher pressures to lower pressures is as simple as changing out the springs. Lighter gas pressures will require lighter springs, but that is an easy fix. 35,000 psi is still a lot of force, the bolt on the hcar isn’t too heavy for 35,000 psi. Not to mention, you would need a new bolt face, and therefore a new bolt, so when converting to 458 socom, you would make sure the bolt would cycle with 35,000 psi.

I mean... it’s a 30.06 automatic, adaptable Battle Rifle. If that is made and sold cheap, then we’d have a LOT of backlash from the anti-gun community: “WHY IS THIS THING SO CHEAP?! My great grandad moved to the UK in the 30s (as a boy), from Germany, and then joined the British army and served in Africa during WW2. He and his mates got captured by some Germans and were put into a cave. The Germans had to go and deal with something and so they stole one of their cars and just drove off lol

My Grandfather was the foreman of the Browning’s ranch in Utah for many years. He was gifted by Brownings with many of the weapons that Mr. Browning invented. I am 75 now and want to get a BAR. I got to shoot the real deal in the Marine Basic Infantry Training after Boot Camp in 1967. Went to Vietnam with the M-14 which was replaced with the M-16 half way through my tour. The newer version (H.A.R.C.) seems like the way to go dispute the nostalgia. I have been shooting 1000 yards with a Tikka T3 in 6.5 CM recently. Seems too easy. I think it would be shoot to put those big 30-06 slugs way down range.

+Malacovics It was a Browning design -built tough, perhaps a little too tough. It was designed to give our guys "walking firepower" to break the stalemate of trench warfare in WW1. The operator only had to walk across no man's land and get to the other trench, weight reduction wasn't a big goal. Then again, in its day, a 20 lb automatic rifle was a HUGE improvement over the heavy, stationary water-cooled machine guns of the time, so the BAR was seen as being a lightweight improvement if you can imagine that. The monster receiver was made from a huge forged brick of steel, then machined to the final form. The bolt is a huge and beefy chunk of steel and the barrel has a good profile on it, and at 24" there's a lot of weight to go around. Of course it comes from a time when guns were only steel or wood for the most part. The concept of using alloys like aluminum and fiber glass wasn't around yet.

I mean... it’s a 30.06 automatic, adaptable Battle Rifle. If that is made and sold cheap, then we’d have a LOT of backlash from the anti-gun community: “WHY IS THIS THING SO CHEAP?! IT’LL BE USED IN THE NEXT SCHOOL SHOOTING!!” Then we’ll see 7.62 and other full rifle firearms being restricted. So I’m guessing the high price is to satisfy the public in knowing that such a deadly weapon won’t be so easy to get.

These BARs are built on new receivers from parts kits or new parts. It doesn't matter that the parts kits are from before '86. The part that needed to be registered as a machine gun before the cut off date was the receiver.

Ah, gotcha. I was thinking just the opposite was the case. That you were taking old BAR's and swapping in new parts. Still wouldn't mind finding an old BAR or Browning belt fed if I am going to the trouble of registering an FA gun. But since the FA Ban in 86 prices have gone insane. Supply and demand. I still kick myself now and again for not buying some old M16A1's when they could be had for a couple grand each.

buffaloroams2 I don't think you understand. The only new machine guns being registered are either dealer samples or police and military guns. The reason legal MG's are so expensive is because the '86 ban put a finite limit on how many registered MG's there are in the country. Also, some people did take advantage of the looming ban to make a lot of money- my understanding is that John Stemple only made a ton of SMG's so he could sell them off for massive profits later after the market went nuts.

a 16 barrel on a 30/06 is pretty useless. You need the longer barrel to utilize the extra powder otherwise you may as well go 308

a 30/06 has no ballistic advantage over a 308 until you get out to a 24 inch barrel. When the military decided to move to short barrels they punted the 06. In a 308 with a 18" barrel this would be a meat alternative to a m14.

This might just be me being a wimp, but I would prefer any rifle I am going to have to carry for any length of time to weigh less than 10 pounds fully loaded and with all the accessories (scopes, lights, etc). 11+ pounds for just the rifle? why did they go from 30-06 to 762? im not a gun guy but it seems 762 is same caliber but with a little less punch...though...getting hit by either you probably dont get a chance to live and complain. im actually surprised the US army didnt keep one of these heavier battle rifles and instead stuck with the M4 and a much heavier SMG for support. it almost feels you can slap a box mag on a HCAR and call it a day.
