Great review. Got my 4k disc early. Thought something was wrong when i noticed how much grain there was. Why on earth would a studio throw grain over an animated film?! Had potential to be the best looking disc in a while. Enjoyable movie though for old school fans.

I am having this same problem as the Dolby Vision is heavily brighter with this movie. However I tried Dolby Vision Dark and it seemed to reduce the contrast on my Sony TV.

Wow. This was my first experience at a Dolby Cinema and I thought it sounded mind blowing.....I hope the 4K Disc fares better. I am excited about the Bright HDR although

You need more experience. The sound was extremely underwhelming, even in the best theaters. No low end, extremely flat. It sounded just like a typical garbage Disney mix.

@@thenonexistinghero No. It's well known that Disney decided years ago to mix all of their movies for kids and TV speakers. All of their discs are mixed with low volume, weak low end and extremely flat. Hardly any dynamic range. There's even a nickname for it. "Dolby Atmouse." People with high end home theater setups have been complaining for years.

I had to watch this review to check if there was something wrong watching this movie. I expected somethong gorgeous and from the start, I thought...this can't be right. This isn't 4K. This is a grainy 1080P upscaled to 4K. An old upscaled Shrek movie looks more sharp and crisp. Whatching a bit further, I also found the sound lacking. A lot in fact. I have Atmos, but just the normal surround is lacking, so I ended the movie, thinking something is wrong. But it seems it isn't and this is as good as it gets. Really weird choises have been made with this movie. Lose the grain, sharpen the images and make it more crisp and popping (instead of only highlighting the whites) and upgrade the sound and/or soundstage/spatial sound for this movie. This could be a gem and is now just a nice looking piece of glass.

Same here. I'm new to 4k on my setup, always been just HD, and was very underwhelmed by this release. I expected such a successful and high budget 2023 movie to be ref quality 4k disc material. Something to demo hopefully, but no. The 4k barely looks better than the BR version and even then it's still sub par for a brand new release. Blown out highs, blown out reds and colour saturation in places, and that overall softness and grain is disappointing. Maybe the target quality for the release was kids on iPads where it probably looks punchy and fine.

Movies don't need to have lots of discreet audio objects to be impressive. There are some movies with static audio mixes that sound amazing. It depends on the audio/sound design & the engineer. Unfortunately, this movie isn't an impressive static mix. At least from what I heard in the theater.

I just watched the 4K blu-ray and wasn't impressed by the sound either. Or the fake film grain. It's a good movie overal, but they definitely could've done a much better job on the sound mix and I would've preferred a perfectly clean look.

I was actually looking forward to this release on my OLED. It looked fuzzy and highlights blown at at my local IMAX. Is this release similar to Ilumination’s other animated movies? I’m not an owner of any of the Minions movies. Thanks, Shane.

Well from what I can tell, a tiny bit of the menu looks similar to the Despicable Me 3 Blu Ray. In fact, the 4K Blu Ray and Regular Blu Ray of Mario are one of the movie posters and a transparent Blu Ray, kinda like the Despicable Me 3 4K blu ray

It's weird that the low-end is supposedly soft. I work at a theater and the low-end in the theater sounded pretty good to me. No comment on the Atmos though. When I saw it, the height channels weren't working at all, but it's a fault of the auditorium since it's always having audio issues. (The renovation for it was on a strict deadline from corporate, and the managers didn't have enough time to take care of everything.)

Just finished watching this. The sound was underwhelming. Bass was good but surrounds and overheads were definitely lacking. Hopefully the disc is better and really hoping Random Space Media releases a 3D version as they seem to be the main 3D distributors for Illumination animations.

For some reason I literally had static on one of my rear speakers with atoms on. I thought it was my speaker but tried another movie and it was fine. Had to go back to 5.1 and the static was gone. I have the iTunes version. Weird.

Since your viewers are mainly home theater equipment enthusiasts, I really think you should be reviewing these films in either Kaleidescape or Disc. Streams are compressed more or less depending on several factors and are never delivered at the same quality twice. This means that your streaming experience could be vastly different than someone else’s. I typically like your videos but these reviews are kind of pointless in my honest opinion.

Fact of the matter is. Streaming trumps disc viewership and buries kaleidescape viewership. That's just the truth. Can streaming look nearly as good as a disc? Yes it can. Compression has come a long way. The stream can also give you a very real representation of what a disc will look like whether you believe it or not. I've got a pretty good display that most would have a hard time seeing a difference between the two on it. That's not to say there aren't times where the disc is noticeably better than a stream cause there is. But too discount streaming is silly since the majority of folks even home theater enthusiasts do stream movies as well. It's good to cover all media and not be singularly focused.

He reviews the digital version on kaleidoscape. This way, he gets his review out before others. The quality is equal to or better than the 4k disc. So the disc will be the same or worse. You'll have to watch a different youtuber if you want an actual 4k disc review (after it comes out). If you have an overpriced kaleidoscape, this will be spot on, though.
