In this video I explore the history of medical and therapeutical uses of music, from the ancient world of Egypt and Greece, to the Medieval Islamic world and all the way until today.

Id like to share a personal story if i may. My father who was quite young, while in hospice care, had music therapist come sing and play guitar with him and our family all around. It changed the tone of his degeneration and the whole dire feeling of the situation evaporated. It felt like hope and acceptance and we all shared a much needed reprieve as we experienced the beautiful music. Im grateful to the therapist for sharing her ability to heal as she did. One on the most profound experiences i have witnessed. Acceptance and coping were a priceless gift

I started playing and writing my own music recently, and it is soul cleansing to emote through it. I absolutely love music. When I'm in distress, trying to wake up, trying to get myself going, music is where i go. Learning it brings me joy like nothing else does too. Discovering a new tune, or learning a new concept and successfully executing it gives me euphoria and joy in a way i can't actually relate to anything else in life.

My SO is a music therapist with Masters degree in it, and phd in public health. There’s a lot of research showing its efficacy, but more to do for sure. Recently, there’s a movement to move Music Therapy education programs out of the Music Colleges and into the human sciences with the other therapies (OT, PT, and medicine).

Filip this was very inspirational. Years ago I worked on a psychiatric unit and we had a wonderful music therapist. She was able to bring joy and calm anxiety better than some of the medications we used for the patients. Now you have inspired me to read Al-Farabi's Philosophy of Music.

The maqam system seems very similar to the raga system of Indian music. I have searched online but haven't found an in-depth comparison or discussion of this topic. It would be interesting if you could make a video on this in the future if it interests you :) love your own original music videos too

Anybody who claims 5 seasons - Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Late Summer - has lost me regarding music therapy. Maybe I'll switch from taoist to chakra music therapy... unless they claim 7 seasons. Most of the bronze singing bowls aren't tuned to a specific maqam, so my interfaith approach might fail

I shouldn't be so flippant, but it's April 1. I've read the Jon Goldman book Healing Sounds... he focuses more on overtone singing (singing harmonics). I've also got Joscelyn Godwin's Harmony of the Spheres compilation of classical works. That's a great place to start if someone is more interested in the philosophers of ancient grease... er, Greece. Then, if someone wanted to dive deep into actually pure harmony, as opposed to the fischer-price hatmony on our pianos and keyboards and fretted instruments... check out Mathieu's book Harmonic Experience. But you'll want a tool to work thru it by ear, such as a fretless string instrument or a Haken Continuum etc

Subhana Allahi ama yushrikun glorified is Allah, high above what they (erroneously) associate. Whatever you are studying or evaluating, i implore you to give second amd third thought to any teachings of dualism or oneness of creation etc. because such notion takes us to an ill-intended creation origin rather than a truly graceful, purposeful, and logical existence. It equates good with evil and confuses right with wrong. It dissolves wrongdoers of wrongdoing.

Just as the mushrikeen minal bani Israel did declare much to be Haram which ar.Robilalimeen did not make haram. They wrote book after book in the name of Allah and His messengers and the muhadithin did the same over a century after Muhammad. All are the same because shirk is shirk no matter what people call themselves and no matter what title they hold in their own man made system of clergy . The bestowing of honor and guidance belongs to none except Allah

@@rebeccasebastian8407 Allah says in Surah Luqman (interpretation of the meaning): “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah…” [Luqman 31:6] The scholar of the ummah, Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: this means singing . Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafsir al-Tabari, 21/40) Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this ayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3/451) Al-Sa’di (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haram speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit.
