Yo Shaq! I worked with the lighting crew, I was there. That was in Moscow... 1991. It was the Monsters of Rock tour. Pantera, The Black Crows, Metallica, AC/DC and a Russian metal band played. It was held at an airfield. They expected about 100,00 people to attend and the last official count was that over a million showed up. There were over 10,000 police and military types there to control the crowd. There were clashes. Hundreds of police ended up hurt and about 50 people died. After the fall of the Berlin wall the kids were still fighting for their freedom from soviet oppression. This gave them a chance to come out and rock! Getting out a lot of pent up aggression. Music can be a driving force for unity. It was the last night of that tour. I remember thinking on the trip home about those kids over there fighting for their rights... and paying for them sometimes in blood. How fortunate I was to live in America. RIP Dime-bag Darrel! We miss you...

Your take on music in general (regardless of genre) is amazing! Talent is talent. I LOVE art in its many forms - regardless if it is my preferred genre. I LOVE watching artists - masters of their craft - display their art for all to see. Dimebag, Vinnie, and Rex were some of the better musicians of their time. It's great to see their music be appreciated. Thanks for the video. My reaction when I first heard that solo and end breakdown was so much like yours. Just ear candy... Plain and simple - ear candy.

Shaq (and David Jeffers), that was summer (I think) 1991. Months later, on Christmas, THEY OVERTHREW THE SOVIET UNION! (ON CHRISTMAS!) I went to Moscow the following June and people were still talking about the Monster of Rock festival. Energy was already in the people. That energy goes from the band to the people to the band to the people and back and forth and back and forth. Can you imagine being there?!

Man, this reaction had me rolling! Pretty much how I feel everytime I hear this version of the song, and I've heard it a hundred times. I wasn't there but I remember watching the footage on MTV, probably headbangers ball. This concert was a BIG deal for Russia at the time. I think I remember the Black Crowes went on after Pantera. (Pantera wasn't greatly known back then) I remember The Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson complaining about Pantera's performance, saying something to the effect of, We need to have peaceful and love music and that band Pantera needs to chill out, or something like that. It's funny to think about that now and how Pantera had no intention to chill. Epic performance, thanks for sharing your reaction. Made my day.

Bro, I’ve been watching you here and there throughout the years. So fucking happy you did some research and understood what was at stake with Pantera. They’re legendary in all of music. That is one of the greatest performances every. You’re the man. Edit: Shaq, just in case you didn’t know. The reason why there are so many people at that concert is because it took place right after the collapse of the Soviet union actually. Up until that point no western music/culture was allowed or tolerated in the country. So when the Soviet Union fell apart a bunch of rock ‘n’ roll and heavy metal bands went to go play this concert. The Russians were beyond excited because they loved western culture in secret. The result was like, close to a million people. If you watch the full video that this video is taken from you can see Soviet police beating concertgoers with rubber sticks because they were enjoying themselves. Even though the Soviet union had fell apart a lot of the strict rules and standards were imposed; people were still oppressed. This concert was very legendary and will go down in history.

dimebag was one of the best human beings to ever enter the music industry, i was incredibly sad when he died. he never let the fame get to him, he was always really humble, he would go to local shows of bands just starting out just to support them, and would meet them back stage and give them free guitar lessons. he would legit spend hours with them for free.

Pantera- Cemetery Gates And as far as the whole shooting goes. Pantera split up and Dimebag and Vinnie Paul went to form a band called Damage Plan, a dedicated fan from when they were Pantera started in an argument at a signing event and they threw him out of building where they were doing autographs and stuff. A little while later in Columbus Ohio, damageplan was doing a show and the guy, I believe his name was Nathan Gale, entered from backstage and shot Dimebag in the back and in the back of the head several times, then he went after a couple other people, the police showed up and shot the man dead. Basically the guy was a crazy fan who was upset about Pantera splitting up. But man for real one of their best songs is Cemetery Gates. Please check it out man you will not regret it.

I will always envy my dad for this. In 1980, somewhere in Texas I forgot where he told me, my dad worked in a music store with Dimebag and taught lessons with him. My dad taught Western swing/country lessons and dimebag taught Metal/Rock. He was known as “Diamond Darrell” back then and he was only 15 and my dad was 16. Of course, one of the biggest albums at the time, Blizzard Of Ozz by Ozzy was big at the store and all the kids rushed in and wanted to learn “Crazy Train” and the main riff/chorus Dimebag altered to make it easier for the beginner class kids. Dimebag taught my dad how to play “Crazy Train” the “wrong” way and my dad taught it to me. YEAH. Dimebag Darrell taught my dad how to play “Crazy Train”. That’s the closest I’m going to get to Dimebag and I’m taking it. Dimebag Darrell basically taught me how to play “Crazy Train”. Rest In Peace Dime ❤️
