I have to say something. I bought a Henry Survival Rifle in 2003. It was a problem child and was pushed to the back of the safe. A few years ago I saw an interview with Anthony Imperato, (Henry Arms CEO/owner). He said if you're not happy with your Henry, any Henry Rifle, write to me; I'll make it right. So, I wrote to him and explained the problems I was having. Mr. Imperato replaced the gun ...for free. He directed his people to make the exchange and they did. Impressive!!! The new Henry Survival Rifle is reliable and they added the Picatinny rail (the first one had a 3/8" dovetail), oh and an orange front sight insert too. Thank You Mr. Imperato. Bully for you sir! Buy that Henry! Buy with the confidence! R, Steve

@@mixup98 Greetings Sir, I was surprised that Mr. Imperato himself responded to my email. I believe he reads all of his email himself. There's more. I also bought a Henry youth model .22 rifle (H001Y) at the same time as the AR-7 (Henry Survival Rifle). It's action was not smooth out of the box. The action became gritty and finally was too difficult to cycle on its first trip to the range. I flooded it with BreakFree when I got home which solved that problem. I included that story with the sad tale of the AR-7. Mr. Imperato offered to replace that gun too. I declined that offer as the little youth model Henry is a family heirloom and it gave us no more trouble after being lubricated. The H001Y youth gun is a handy little trapper sized gun. I love the little lever gun and all my kids learned to shoot with it. I just can't part with it. R, Steve p,s I enjoy your videos.

I bought one of these about 6 years ago and put about 300 rounds through it. Great little rifle! Seems to be a little picky with ammo though. CCI is the favorite for this rifle in my experience, especially the Stingers. I've only had a couple of feed failures when breaking in but she ran smooth as silk after about 50 rounds. Very happy with the purchase. Great video!

I bought one of these a couple of months ago at Atwood's Ranch and Home for $235.00, got a military discount and got a 3rd magazine. It's in a backpack that I keep in the spare tire well of my Jeep Cherokee since my wife and I have to travel a lot for her medical treatments. I put an inexpensive red/green dot sight on it, and I couldn't be happier with it. If we get stranded, we'll be eating bunnies or squirrels. I carry a couple of 9x19mm pistols in the car for defensive purposes, but the AR-7 US Survival Rifle would do in a pinch.

That spring wire retainer on the magazine is critical to correct feeding on these guns and probably why the Charter magazine failed consistently. If the wire tension is not correct the rounds can be cocked upward in the magazine and result in a failure to feed. This can easily be tested and corrected: Take a partially loaded magazine and depress the top round as far as you can with your finger, let off quickly so the round slams up into the wire retainer. If the nose of the round rises up, bend the wire down slightly. Repeat until corrected. Also note that Henry recommends only using high velocity ammo in order to ensure proper cycling. I imagine the feed ramp on the magazine would also be something to keep an eye on. I have the Henry U.S. Survival (not the Charter AR-7) and 3 Henry magazines, I've put a few hundred rounds through each including CCI HPs, Mini-mags, some Winchester, and a few others and I don't recall if I've ever had a jam, maybe one stove pipe.

Just an interesting find, many of the honeycomb openings surrounding the stored receiver, barrel, and magazines can be used for extra ammunition storage. Some are very slightly too narrow but a 7/32 drill bit is just enough to open them to accommodate a few more rounds. With an extra magazine for the receiver (24 rounds) and filling all the honeycombs I could, I found storage for an additional 30+ rounds. This essentially results in about 55 rounds total.

I had one of these in 1985 but it wasn't called Henry. When I sprayed wd40 into a cleaned receiver for some reason it fired 3 rounds with each trigger squeeze, around 12 rounds or so it went back to single shot. I had those 25 round mags and a barrel shroud, M16 grip, slide out stock and MP5 type accessory sights. It was awesome. Found out the 7 shot mag jammed everytime, said goodbye to it. I used PMC rounds and didn't hardly jam. The wax on 22 rounds will definately give problems from feeding to ejection, keep it clean and no problem.

OIL, OIL, OIL made all of the difference with my friend's AR-7 when we were kids in the late 70's. He had seen a Docu on the Vietnam War where troops were issued the new M-16 w/ no oil or cleaning kits, the weapons kept jamming till the kits finally arrived. That little warmonger picked up on that and we never had jams. That poor AR-7 was abused so badly - immersed in water, lost in a shed for 2 years, dropped down a rocky embankment where the stock got broken. I wish I could remember the manufacturer, I did not know there was more than one. I want to buy one again after this video, we had so much Fun!

Yes indeed, oil is the answer. The Henry owners manual says to oil the bolt before shooting, which is what I did, and I only had the one malfunction. Your friend's AR you shot in the late '70s was made by either ArmaLite (1959-1973) or Charter Arms (1973-1990) and you certainly have some great memories shooting with your friend. I bought my Charter Arms AR-7 back around 1980. It is the silver version. I don’t know what to tell you, but after decades of use and thousands of rounds I have only had a dozen or so jams. I have several magazines including some type of large capacity one. I haven’t seen. a Henry version, but for the Charter Arms ones you never want to dry fire one. That will peen a spot at the chamber that will have to be removed. Also I remember that Charter Arms made a pistol version! It had removable barrel that was keyed on the opposite side so that you couldn’t put a pistol barrel onto a rifle receiver. They even made a gold colored handgun version! They sort of resembled a Broomhandle Mauser and that’s why they were sold.

Fast forward 4 years, I've moved to a piece of property that I put my own range on. After a few more rounds, I changed my mind about this little gun. It is a little finickier about ammo than my other 22's, but for the most part it's become one of my favorites. I tried putting a red-dot on it for a test, but I took it off because the open sights are just as good. Nice 2" groupings at 100 yards with some Remmington ammo. Back in the mid 70's when I was about 8 years old a friend and myself were exploring an abandoned house that we were forbidden to go near.. I kept that book, had to hide it through moves and all from the parents and my sisters for about 8 years till was out on my own and then it was just another book on a shelf when I had a shelf to put it on, i still have that up in the attic in a box somewhere. If you ever had that book , 1st version anyway, i don't know if any others were made. You know what it was suggesting that this rifle was good for. Of course i never aspired to be an assassin but i always had that rifle in my mind and one day I found one at a pawn shop, it is the raggediest thing you ever saw, I was 23 or so and that thing was 15 bucks. The AR-7 was always picky about ammo because they were designed for hyper-velocity ammo like the CCI Stinger. Another point, the feed ramp is integral to the magazine, so any deformation of the feed lips will cause a problem. Some have cured that problem by putting a slight chamfer on the lower portion of the barrel chamber. It has been my experience that plain lead ammo with the wax lube tend to gum up the works on semi-autos, so I use only copper or brass coated.

I bought one these a few years ago, and its been a really good rifle. You can store a 3rd mag when the gun is stowed by placing it in the mag well. Also, the slots in the scope rail are for airgun mounts. Several airgun mounts and rings have whats known as a scope stop pin that inserts into a hole on the scope rail to prevent the scope mount from sliding on the rail while shooting. Those pins fit the slots of Henry's version of the rifle. If you use airgun rings, you can easily remove the scope and reattach it with less loss of zero than with normal 3/8 dovetail rings.

With higher grain cartridges it works great, no jams (We used the Federal .22LR 40 grain solid with muz vel of 1240 fps that I purchased for my Henry lever action and it loved it).... But we tried some cheaper stuff made in Mexico and it was a disaster, it jammed one out of every 3 to 4 shots... Nice! We make a variety of slings for these and sell on Ebay and Ecrater which you can see here under Slim River but have been closed due to the virus. Note about ammo, as long as you keep the velocity around 1250-1260 you'll be alright. 1600 is too hot and will hurt the rifle and 1050 and lower isnt enough for reliable blowback. Ive found that the best reliability is with CCI and keeping the action clean. Though I remain of fan of AR-7 i'd like to see Henry improve it further with a revised action, all-steel barrel and revised method of barrel attachment. But as it is, 2.5 lbs and simple for survival and occasional use, its great. I do realize there is debate among .22 takedowns but all things considered I cant think of a reason for everyone not to have an AR-7. For new users, remember to extend the charging handle when using it, keep some grease on the barrel threads and be careful when indexing the barrel into the receiver slot so you dont ruin it. And as I remember, Henry says not to use earlier magazines!

I did have troubles trying to fire miniature shot shells in it, and have stayed away from .22S and .22L - always use .22LR. My bigger problem seems to be defective ammunition. I can't tell if mine is the Energizer Bunny or a Timex watch. I'm not surprised at all that other .22 break-down rifles have higher accuracy.

Great video. I have a Henry AR-7 and I think it's pretty neat. James Bond also used an AR-7 in another scene. Bond uses an Armalite AR-7 survival rifle with a custom suppressor, issued to him by Q, to assassinate Krilencu. Kerim Bey (Pedro Armendariz) eventually does the shooting. Q mistakenly reports the rifle to be .25 caliber, while it actually fires a .22 Long Rifle cartridge.

Remember these were designed before the .223/5.56 platform, An AR15 pistol would do nicey as a survival weapon today. You couldn't carry the amount of ammo but plenty more punch. Still this is a sweet little machine. CCI is the best ammo.

Mixup98 I'm so happy you shared your video on the Henry AR-7. I bought ArmaLite AR-7 in 1969, used from a friend for $25.00. He had bought it new in '65. One day his mom told him she didn't want any guns in the house, so he sold it to me. I still have the box and papers. I had a Weatherby Mark XXII so I didn't shoot it very much, but don't remember having problems with it. Always thought it was a pretty cool gun. It may have had some intrinsic problems, but Charter Arms was the one that really gave it a black eye. Happy to hear that Henry has refined it. Subscribed

Hello John and welcome to my channel. Wow...an ArmaLite AR7 from '65....now that is cool. You're right about Charter Arms giving the AR7 a bad name but apparently Henry has definitely made some improvements to the design, especially to the magazine. Thank you so much for the sub and please have a safe and Merry Christmas.

I also owned a Charter Arms AR7 and calling it a piece of junk is being nice. It consistently had failure to feed and failure to eject issues. I bought the Henry AR7 a couple years ago and just love it. Sean (the James Bond) Connery is the reason I bought the first one. Thought it was just a cool rifle then, and now that Henry manufactures it, it is a cooler rifle.

I had an original Armalite AR-7, that had been retrofitted with a collapsible wire stock for the Israeli military. It wasn't a bad shooter with CCI Mini-Mags, but any of the cheaper "milk-carton" ammo turned it into a jam-o-matic. I sold it after a few years, but have considered picking up the Henry because they seem to have worked out the bugs. One problem I had with my AR-7 was that the barrel nut would loosen after a few rounds. When this happened, the bolt hit the frame when returning to battery, and it eventually cracked the frame. Great video, as always!

I had an original Charter Arms AR7 a few years back. I picked it up used at a local pawn shop for $75. It came with 2 mags. In the limited shooting I did with it, it worked just great. A friend of mine just had to have it and I sold it to him. He used it alot and really liked it. He turned down many offers on it and kept it until he died. I wish I knew who has it now. I'd try to buy it back. I've always liked 22 takedowns. I also had a Marlin Papoose. But it is long gone too. It's hard to hang on to them. Everyone just seems to love them. I decided to pick up a new 22 a couple of weeks ago. I watched your video on the Savage 64 and decided It would be perfect. Reliable, accurate and inexpensive. When I got to my local Academy, they had the 64 for$129. But right beside it was a Savage 64 takedown model with the FDE stock. It was priced at $219. $90 more than the regular 64. Once I held it, I knew it was the one and worth the extra. Academy gave me a 20 percent discount on the rifle and everything else I had in my cart. I bought 2 extra mags and a nice sling for it. I'm very happy with it. It is my house 22 rifle now. Only problem I'm having with it, is my 100lb wife just thinks it's perfect for her! Like I said- these little takedowns are really hard to hang on to! She has a loaded mag in it, the other 2 mags loaded up, and has it sitting on her side of the bed! Right beside my H&R 9 shot revolver she likes and shoots so good. She likes to shoot and can shoot all of our guns. But she is partial to 22's. She likes the lightweight, light recoil and light muzzle flash of the 22 caliber weapons and is deadly accurate with them. I guess I better go buy the other Savage takedown Academy has on their shelf. Thanks for the great videos! You have an outstanding channel.

@@mixup98 I got my 1st gun 1971. I was 7. One of Dad's brothers had a Marlin lever action 22 rifle he wanted to sell for $20. It was early on a Saturday morning and I heard them talking in our kitchen. I got out of bed and went to see my uncle. I spotted the Marlin on the table. Dad ask me if I liked it and handed it to me. It felt like it weighed 50 lbs ! I said "Yeah!". He said "Good. It's yours". I was in heaven! Dad had started teaching me how to shoot when I was 5 and I had a BB rifle. I've still got that ole gun. I've shot 1000's of rounds through it over the years. Taken countless squirrels with it. And mom used it only weeks after Dad bought it to run off a would be burger that tried to break in one night when Dad was working late. She put a shot dead center through our back door after warning him to quit trying to get in. After hearing our story and seeing the bullet hole, the cops told Mom, "Good job. If he comes back, do it again!". He never did come back messing around. I bought my H&R new, when I was 16. I worked at Santa Claus land that summer. There was a small gunshop on my way home. I stopped there almost daily. That Nickel plated 22 revolver really caught my eye. The owner let me put it on layaway. I stopped every payday and paid some down on it. This was the 70's. Times were much different. Mom went with me when I made my last payment and did the paperwork. Like I said, very different, much easier going times. A gunsmith friend of mine made a set of grips for it out of 100 year old barn wood from Kentucky a few years ago. I also have an H&R double action 22 that was made when New England Firearms was making them in the late 90's. I bought it new back then to use to teach my 4: kids to shoot handguns. It's still going. Those H&R's are tough ole guns!

@@shadowwolf2524 Things certainly have changed over the years and most of not for the better. @@mixup98 I'm sure you would enjoy that model 39. And I'd love to watch the video if you pick it up. I've owned several 22 rifles over the years and without a doubt, my Marlin 39 is the toughest one I've owned. After 50 years of hard use, in all kinds of weather, with minimal care, it's still going. I've got one of the new Henry Survival Rifles like the one in the video. It is plenty accurate with the peep sights and has been totally reliable with the exception of CCI Velocitor ammo; it doesn't like that hyper-velocity stuff. They are super fun and serve their purpose admirably. The only thing I don't like is the big fat orange plastic front sight blade. It is too easily moved around in the dovetail so once I was happy with the sight-in, I glued it in place with model glue - the kind that doesn't melt plastic.
