In the 1970s I had someone plant a CB jammer near my house. Took me about 5 minutes to find it. I got a nice little CB, a car battery, and a good laugh out of it.

@@NavinF Let's say the car battery was just an average cranking battery with a low 50Ah rating (not the same as CCA rating). Now, let's assume the CB was a full-power 4-watt transceiver. A 12V 50Ah battery would provide 600 wh of power, which means it would power a 4-watt load for 150-hours, or 6.25 days. Ah ratings for batteries are "20-hour" ratings, and given the low draw, it is conceivable that it would have operated for at least 6 days, depending on the actual Ah rating of the battery. But it's not like it would be jamming every channel on the dial. There were 27 channels until 1977, then 40 channels were available. Still, a CB continuously broadcasting on one channel would only "jam" that one single channel. Seems pointless given the availability of other channels on which to communicate.

Back in the mid-1990's there were a number of radio jamming devices constructed, primarily for thwarting activity on various CB channels. I was interesting in the technical aspects, rather than the political. I set to locating & dissecting the units, to better understand them. Sometimes access was prohibitive, but in at least two occasions, I was able to acquire the suspect devices. The first device was rather simple, but also very effective. It consisted of a 40-channel CB Radio, a Lionel model train transformer, a full-wave bridge, and a lamp timer - all of which was built into a metal ammo box. The transformer produced strictly an AC Signal, and was rectified via the full-wave bridge to produce a very noisy DC power source, which powered the radio. The radio itself had been modified in two primary ways. 1st, the audio limiting circuit was opened, to allow for severe over-deviation. 2nd, a sample of the 60 Hz AC power source was ‘fed’ directly into the mic circuit. The result was a very loud & distorted 60 Hz buzz being transmitted across the channel, rendering the channel useless. The lamp timer was set, with multiple on/off sequences, so as to power cycle the ‘buzzer’ as it was called, every few hours. This made the device both annoying & difficult to track down. The antenna was a simple dipole made of wire, and the device was located in the penthouse, of an 8-story building, giving the buzzer a significant height advantage. This design is credited to the former Heavy Chevy. The second device was more of a make-shift repeater. It consisted of a 40-channel CB Radio & a VHF-High band Receiver, outfitted with two CTCSS decoder boards. Both ‘Tone’ boards controlled relays, which activated with two distinctly separate tones. The 1st board controlled the PTT Relay, while the 2nd board controlled a relay in-series with the audio path. In essence both tones would need to be present, in order to both key the CB, and allow audio to pass to the transmitter. The VHF-High band receiver would pick-up a signal, with both correct tones, and the CB would rebroadcast the incoming signal over a particular CB Channel. This configuration made it difficult to track down the individual offender, and the two-tone protected receiver made it impossible for the average person to hijack the repeater. This designed is credited to the late Tricky Dick.

One story that happened very close to me somewhere in the 70s when most amateurs around here could not afford expensive gear was that some wealthy guy bought himself a multi kW but very noisy transmitter annoying the hell out of everyone around. The result was a little transmitter built by a small group that was then planted right on the property of the guy. It consisted of a wire antenna pushed into the bark of a tree, some simple and small transmitter and a storage cap. The guy would transmit, thereby charging the storage cap of the jammer with his own transmitters power and the jammer would then transmit some annoying tone for several seconds making it impossible for him to hear any replies to his calls. All that with no battery which meant that it could operate for as long as the jammer didnt break for other reasons.

@@RAndrewNeal Oh, it was probably not what I'd call legal, by any stretch of the imagination. 'Tricky Dick' worked at a local 2-way Radio Shop, & was rather eccentric, although he did have a fine appreciation of Jazz Organ (i.e. Booker T & The MG's). He was very smart when it came to electronics, as he saw connections & possibilities, where others did not. In my youth, I learned a great deal from him. Some of those skills I still use today. He passed away several years ago, but he has not been forgotten.

FWIW Mt Diablo has a connection to the Zodiac Serial Killer case, in one of the later letters the writer claimed to have placed a bomb somewhere on Mt Diablo, however the detonation date in the 1970s went by with nothing happening.

Years ago, there was an amateur radio jammer on a repeater nearby. It was a 600kHz oscillator and a mixer. The output frequency of the repeater was mixed down to the input (600kHz is the european standard for 2m). The device was tiny, solar powered, and built with expertise. It's a shame that this knowledge was used so destructively.

In the 1970s I used to go up on the mountain to “rabbit hunt”. Working with others to track/locate CB radio transmitters, fixed or mobile. It was a big thing in the CB heyday. All you needed was a one foot diameter loop antenna. Supposedly you can see more from this location than any other place in US.

I did it at the end of the really popular time in the late 70's early 80s. I was legendary in the town I grew up in for dealing with the actual jammers and getting them off the air, physically if needed. The Top 3. #1 Krazy K reason ? Dead keys and music. He knew that he couldn't out power the top stations. So they did the next best thing, plug up everyone's ears. Everyone knew where the antenna was. You couldn't miss it because it was right down town in a 1000 person small city. Right on top of the businesses that all had apartments above them. We knew the building well, or should I say, the flat roovs. I was 16. I was the closest one. One night, we were out in the garage drinking, and I believe someone challenged me to go get it. So by 2::30 I was very saturated with Bacardi Rum and Cherry Coke. I have no idea what I said, but the challenge was agreed. 2:40 l left my house with I think 🤔 the 3 best tools for the job, and I always had a buck knife . I guess that made 4. I vaguely remember it. I got on the buildings rooves from a fire escape 3 buildings down. And then proceeded quietly. I had a ceap realistic 3 ch walkie talkie. A friend was listening to all the local police traffic that was in the town and county. Plus, the local mutual aid channels and the Tac channel. Singular we found out by accident that the locals were using it regularly to talk car to car. So we had a person who was a kid, the same as me, listening to all the frequencies in real time. Everyone on the channel trying to talk through this asshole was more than eager to lend me their scanners and any other useful equipment to simultaneously listen to everything. He was using his base to talk to me via channel 7 or one of the 3 frequencies I had. So, if the cops were called, I knew it as soon as they did and had a plan. To sum it up ? I got 2, Sigma 4 antennas and a Shakespeare BIGSTICK, and then his mobile antenna once. I took 4 antenna raids to get him to apologize, and after a while, we became friends to this day. I was at his house for something, and my 14 year old son was trying to be a smart ass and asked him if his dad took 3 antennas off the top of his house while he was sleeping, he lowered his head and said Yes. I replied, you had it coming. The End of the most famous cb takedown in piss ant USA.

The second most famous troublemaker was fairly far away. 25-30 miles. A base. Called himself FT, I have no idea. But he was causing trouble for 2 years straight. I happened to be coming home from my mom's house to mine. I was listening to the stereo, and all of a sudden, I had 10 over S-9. So I did the usual. North then South. Any mobile that got close and he was off the air. Finally, I was lucky. I knew someone would get him eventually. Just didn't think It would be me. Call it, being in the right place at the right time. So I did my thing and found him at a road that was a dead end. He was full scale, then i turned the RF gain down all the way. Then, I would take my K-40 off the mount. Drive around the same thing because this guy was running power. Finally, I would remove the antenna connector on the radio itself. Then, the highest signal you could receive was only a few hundred feet away. I got out, looked around, and there it was. I wrote the exact address down and notes like how many cars he had and the license of all of them, the color of his house, a brief description and anything else that could be used to identify the offender. Then I drove off and resumed my way home. After about 12 to 15 miles away, I would reveal the address, a description of how to find the house. Silence............. He said something stupid. If you come back I'll be waiting for you. That's when I started describing the house and the un attached garage in detail. Next was all the cars, and the license plate for each one. Then I threw in that if you are going to wait for us for however long, when do return back a month, 6 months, a year or maybe next week. 🤔 I started with the psyops. I said when we do return, we might slash all his tires or burn his house down with him in it or not. His wife was listening by then, and he was probably showing off for her that was when she actually herd the address, vehicles, licenses on vehicles, and on till his wife herd me identify her vehicle and give the license plate number. Correctly, of course, and how I was going to return at some random time and burn down their house. Next time, he keyed, I could hear her squaking and freaking out big time. She must have said something to her stupid husband that was pretty serious because the next time he keyed, it was like a different person. He said he was sorry and apologized to everyone who used the frequency and begged me not to do any of the things I said I would do. I gave him 1 last warning. He was never a problem again. And we are friends too.

Then there was #3. I was tweaking an amplifier inductor and capacitors, not even on the local channel ? It's a channel that I'm sure he heard the bleed over from because it was only 10 KHz away. He called me a racital term. I always asked people who don't know me well enough to go one way or another. No, I wasn't black. I'm sure he thought I was because I was on 27.025 , channel 6. I had at the time a very capable station. So I shot skip on the Super Bowl. With the brothers who had to talk to me and really had no choice. Then I did several upgrades, and I was right there with em. Now, they had no choice. Someone else was who we were thinking. Because I was and knew most of them and the same thing, they had to deal with me. I smoked a bunch of the locals in that group. But back to the story. Someone else knew who he was and called me on the phone and told me who he really was and mentioned that he was a ham. The next word out of my mouth was, Callsign. He didn't want to give it to me because he knew what I was going to do with it. He finally gave it to me. All while I'm giving him shit back. I told him I had a special surprise for him as I quickly found him by Callsign , and he had 50 pictures at least. I said a series of letters and meant they couldn't be detected. Mean that they can't be detected. I got on Google Maps and looked at his house front and top view. He was in a location that needed some thought. I was looking at Google Maps, and I noticed a daycare and the best place to retreat from. I formed a plan. He had 3 towers, and 2 of them had pads that could be easily exploited by someone like myself. After I gave him the notice, which 2 towers were scheduled to come down. They were just out of the treeline. I came up with a plan. It was the easiest thing to destroy his ability to do anything. Once, I started giving him detailed information only of his house, cars , boat, radios, and everything else in his QRZ profile. He had a complete turnaround. He said he was sorry for causing trouble, and it was the pain medicine they gave him after a surgery or something . I suggested that he stay off the radio while he was taking the meds. That was it. He said he was imbarresed and asked for forgiveness. We did, and he was fine after that. We are also good friends. The moral of this story is that just because you don't see radio waves doesn't mean they can't be seen. You might as well put a 1000-watt light on the location. It was too easy that one was. I never left my chair.

We used to get people talking on the Birmingham repeaters, in squeaky voices, during the late 80's. Hence the name 'squeakies'. I used to listen whilst on the bus to college. Often crying with laughter at the antics. These were mostly just personal gripes at groups or even just individuals who ran the repeaters. Then there were the commercial repeater jammers. Those were usually competitors, or ex-employees, trying to damage the business. Then there were the wallies on CB. Usually bored kids, or people with mental problems venting on air.

This is one of the regional high level sites in my general area. I knew they have had a history of conflict regarding private property and access and site leasing but I didn't have any idea there was any jamming activity. Neither this site nor the closer high level site to me are especially active. The communities are dedicated but not especially busy.

That antenna is overkill for a device so close to the repeater site. A 19" piece of wire would be more than enough to jam a repeater from a transmitter at 1W output from the range indicated by Google Earth.

I ran across a jammer that I think was being run by local LE about a year before the 55 was repealed. I was driving North on I35 through Temple TX. My car was a real POS, just about everything was likely to break at any moment, so going fast, as much as it is in my blood just was not feasible. Driving that POS probably saves me a big ticket that day. Just south of Industrial, I35 has an S bend. On approaching that S bend I noticed alternator whine. I knew my cheap CB had some whine when it was receiving, but it was not making any other noise, so I thought that either the battery or the alternator in my car was failing, and that the noise was now coming over the car's radio. I turned of everything I could reach and the noise continued. Then I noticed that there were about 20 police cars on each side of the highway with people pulled over. I just kept on going, looking for an AutoZone, without running the headlights and AC like i usually did. About half a mile past industrial I began to hear all kinds of people warning about the speedtrap and the jamming. It was all distorted because they were just barley able to talk over the jammer. I got to the autozone and both the alternator and battery checked. The battery was a little low because the alternator had a bad diode and was only producing 2/3 the current it should. I bought a rebuilt alternator and a belt and pushed on to Dallas

@@Teesquared00 That’s still true on certain Hondas over the past 20 years. It just takes having enough tools on the side of the road. My 1999 Integra was a pain in the ass to change, and I needed the lift at work. My current car, a 1997 Acura CL with a v6, took about an hour. I had to empty and remove the power steering reservoir, loosen the passenger side motor mount, and jack up the engine a little, but after that it wasn’t as bad as the Integra. I could potentially see “side of the road” for the CL’s alternator.

How about an organ jammer.. In the 70's we had a neighbour in our apartment flat, playing an electric organ every day, and very poorly. It sat against our wall, drove us nuts. We asked him to move it, he wouldn't. So I placed a 100W CB with antenna on our side of the wall and hit TX every time he started playing. The RF made horrible noises, so he called a service engineer. Of course I didn't transmit until the service engineer left. And kept on doing that until he gave up and got rid of the organ. To this day he doesn't know what caused it.

I used to live right near here. I’ve been to the top of Mt Diablo before. You can see all the way to San Francisco & the Golden Gate Bridge from the top. My shower window used to look out on to Mt Diablo. Beautiful view. Local High Schools cross country teams run up to the top of Mt Di(What it’s referred to in the Bay Area as), as part of their training.

Back in the 90s there was a jammer deployed in this very Mt Diablo but on the CB bands. It was remote controlled and was also never found although many were hunting for it. I don't recall how long it went for but it was weeks. It's possible the responsible party changed the batteries but I don't recall. Thank you for sharing this story.

LoRa SX1276 could probably do it if the frequency is higher than the 130MHz it supports. It’s 20dBm max output from the module so would need a decent amp.

I use this repeater sometimes, along with N6NFI in los gatos, that's interesting that someone put a jammer on the repeater, most of the repeaters in Santa Clara county serve as emergency communications on the SVECS system along with silicon valley ares/races system, they usually use one repeater all the time but in the event of a disaster all the repeaters in silicon valley become Emergency communications.

BTW, K6POU is/was owned by Wendell Petersen. Been there for years. I never used it. I use W6CX, on 2M/220. UHF went in the tank in the Bay Area after the PAVE PAWS radar issues. Everybody had to reduce power to a level where it wasn't feasible to keep the rptrs on the air.

I used to use 147.06 repeater before I moved to Oregon... 145.13 in Stockton was a killer high level box, as was the 146.085 machine in Yuba City! You could cover from Redding all the way down to just north of Stockton! 147.06 could cover 80 from Vallejo all the way into Sacramento, and 145.13 could cover from Sacramento to Turlock...

There’s a story about a repeater here in the United States specifically around Cincinnati Ohio. That was jammed constantly by who knows who. Family of the owner of the repeater just pulled the repeater switch and said no more. The jammer was never found

We had a jackass around the cleveland area that was jamming pretty bad. We determined him to be mobile after repeated fox hunts. One day we were out hunting him, and narrowed down his transmissions to a parking lot, a golf course I believe it was. One of my buddies pulled into that lot, and had the jammers signal full quieting on the input with about 80db attenuation. The only car in that parking lot was a cop. Suddenly the transmission stopped, and the cop drove off. The QRM picked back up a few weeks later. Can't prove it, but its a hell of a story.

Strange, except for the SKCC folks thinking they own the frequencies around their watering holes (QRL?, wait two seconds, transmit, repeat), I rarely encounter interference on the HF bands using CW. It's almost like you think 2M is all there is to ham radio. Many hams don't use the band, or even a mic.

I find it strange that the jammer felt compelled to commit this illegal act, rather than just remove the repeater from his/her programming. We teach our ham radio candidates to disengage when experiencing interference. Turn the knob off or change frequencies. It's also a reminder that 2M Voice doesn't define ham radio. Why the jammer would "walk away" from the hobby because of some idiots on a repeater is beyond me. Perhaps the jammer knows nothing about digital modes, Morse code, EME, SOTA and POTA, etc. What's next for the jammer? Sabotaging anything that they disagree with? Should the local FOX news affiliate be concerned? Jammer is a mental case, for sure.

I think the reason he might walk away is the other repeaters are mostly quiet, dead air, except for a few check in nets. This repeater is the one that is active and people come to like it or not - there is actually something to listen to other than a repeater call sign every 10 minutes. I think the real reason he did this and walked away is he is craycray.

My point is that he was going to walk away from the hobby because a single repeater in his area had convos he didn't like? The guy needs a new hobby.

Most jammers are lacking a few marbles. We had one for a while fairly close to where I live in N. California. He was a licensed ham and a racist. There was one particular HF net open to anyone but populated mostly by Black hams. The conversations were always nice and very sociable. But this guy would crank up a kilowatt and then start jamming their conversations with music, voice, noise, whatever. He was caught and fined by the FCC but fought against paying the fine and having his license revoked. I haven't luckily heard him on the air lately and hope I never do again.

Thanks for this Lewis. As one of those who was questioning the whole motivational thing behind such activities on your last video, this was a bit of an eye opener and, whether you agree with the reasoning or not, the very fact that there was motivation does for some reason make the crime (for such it is, at least in the UK) a little less heinous simply because the perpetrator seemed to be doing it 'for a reason'. It makes me wonder even more about the motivation behind those more well documented attacks on repeaters over here, such as some of the ones you mentioned, and if I should perhaps adjust my opinions on the perpetrators which at the moment still run pretty low. Let me exp[lain my thinking here so there's no confusion. The scenario is a simple one and sadly one that happens all too often. 'Mr. A walks across the road and punches Mr. B in the mouth. These are the facts as seen by all who were present at the time. Now, If it turns out that Mr B had been winding Mr A up for some considerable time and had perhaps say, damaged some of Mr A's property, some sympathy is felt for Mr A and despite what he did being wrong and yes, illegal, there is a certain amount of understanding for his actions among the wider community. If however Mr A simply assaulted Mr B out of the blue without provocation, just because he could, that places him the the category of low life scum, someone with distinct mental health problems or simply a criminal who should be behind bars. Perhaps the above view explains why my interest in the motivation for these attacks on other peoples freedoms, such as the freedom to enjoy their hobby say, is peeked by such actions. As others have stated, certainly in teh area I live, back ij the days of pre legal CB we had one or two 'idiots' who thought they were funny. The rest of the community, for that's what it was back then, quickly tracked them down and 'dealt with them' which made for a much happier experience for all concerned in the long run. Many amateur radio operators ARE hobbyists. But, the FCC would not devote valuable spectrum to a mere pastime. Amateur radio is actually a SERVICE and serves the public good in multiple ways. Among the most important of these is the provision of emergency communications. I can think of several reason why unknown parties might wish to interfere with emergency communications, none of them good.

why do people disrupt a hobby... Same people who buy up all the ps5's and resell them on ebay for way over their MSRP.. They do it because it's a type of self gratification and to flex knowing no one in their right mind is going to pay them $5K plus for a video game machine. People that jam ham are typically hams themselves in the USA and will even join in on the complaining and fox hunts. It also may be important to say that most hams that drone on about finding some ham jammer and reading off specs of DF equipment on the air are typically full of themselves and have no real interest in DFing jack or they themselves are the person behind planting said jamming devices in the first place. I have dealt with several hams in the past that were front and center on DFing ventures of jamming devices on ham, commercial and railroad bands only to find out that they were the ones who built and deployed said devices because the could not pass the test to advance their license or some club wronged them.. Others are politically motivated and not even licensed hams but know as much if not more about radio and systems designing as a ham would and will build radios and jammers to plant about.
