Johor Bahru is the second largest city in Malaysia. It is often overlooked in the guidebooks, and yet it has a colourful history that has left its traces upon the shape, sounds, and usage of the city. Pirates have become princes. Triads have become charities. And plantations have turned into shopping malls. Lawrence Gray wittily walks the path of this frontier city's youthful founders.

My parents left China for Singapura were commonly known as 'sinkek'(new guests). They still spot 'the pig-tails of the Manchurian culture). Well, glad to be borned here, growing up with the Malay childrens enjoying 'nasi lemak' with the tiny delicious 'tambang'(herrings) and 'sambal'. Hence, there was a 'Use Your Hands' campaign... with "Fingers Licking Good!" with this sweet song of unforgottened TODAY!

@Goodnessgrays

@@medzlopez most people speak some English. And the Malay middle classes tend to have been educated in the UK. The Chinese probably speak less English.

Ngee Ann City is formerly Teochew Cementery. Quite eerie for some security guards working during the night.

Strange that to this day, there still remains the undeveloped ex-cemetery land around present day Ngee Ann City mall....nite & day difference in that you get this plot of (highly expensive by now) little jungle land surrounded by highly developed modern buildings like Ion etc. What they going to do with that land ?! Sooner or later i'll have to seem practically logical to build something on it ?!

Thank you! I wish I had a chance to finish a big documentary on the British takeover of Malaysia. I had the script. I bought a lot of new equipment. Lined up the locations... and then two years of Covid closed everything down and now I'm back in the UK after thirty years in Asia. Singapore and Malaysia are brilliant places. They have some dodgy politics, but having witnessed recent British politics, Malaysia's looks reasonable in comparison!

@@Goodnessgrays I have to tell you that I really appreciate the massive effort you have put into the cinematography and scripting. The music is quite cool too. V enjoyable I watched it twice. Knowing the historical significance of any place helps me appreciate it many times better. Especially if it is about war and conquest.. nation building and leadership . . . I frequent Johor for food...and will not be looking at those old buildings / streets the same way again. Look forward to your next vid!

Riau Lingga or Malay Archipelago. Three Indonesian islands namely Singapore, Bintan and Batam near Malaya. The Indonesian flag till today is 'red & white' since 1945 which is actually a Dutch flag when the blue portion is torned off for Indonesia Independence. So, did Singapore gains her independence in 1945? Then, we have 'a crescent & five stars' attached to its 'red & white' known Johor-Riau-Lingga for Singapore with her Johore Sultanate known 'Johor Baharu' with a British lion, crescent five stars and a Malayan tiger ending with MAJULAH SINGAPURA!

Ah yes, and that is another story! Have just finished the Hidden History of Johor Lama, looking at the history of the Johor Sultans from Sang Nila Utama to the accession of Abu Bakar. And as we researched that we came across a number of sites connected to the earlier pre-Islamic period. To deal with that we would have to spread our research across a much wider area, taking in India and Indonesia. As it is, our history of the sultans leaves a number of areas unvisited such as the Riau Islands and Penyengat. I closer study of the Bugis also would be an interested area to create a popular Video history... But as ever, time and resources are in short supply. But keep an eye out for the Hidden history of Johor Lama.

Shantha Viraaj very good question. I’ve been told that there’s an old city that hasn’t been excavated because it’s mostly under a lake. We were exploring Kota Sayong when told this and the directions were vaguely to the south of there. I thought, well that’s another era to do a bit of research into. But haven’t had time to put anything together yet.
