The Hidden Meaning Behind Lebaran Ketupat
Ketupat is a traditional food made from rice cooked by boiling in a woven coconut leaf. This dish has become very special and inseparable from the moment of Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia. According to various sources, the Ketupat tradition originated from the spread of Islam in Java by a highly respected figure, Sunan Kalijaga. He was one of the Wali Songo who played an important role in the spread of Islam in Java. The name "Ketupat" itself comes from the word "Kupat" which has two meanings, namely "ngaku lepat" (admitting mistakes) and "laku papat" (four actions). The four actions include: overflowing (luberan), melting sins (leburan), wide open doors of forgiveness (lebaran), and purifying oneself (laburan). Over time, this Ketupat tradition has become very embedded in Indonesian culture, especially as a typical Lebaran dish.
