Thank you. I haven't seen this in years, and it has gotten even better with age. An impressionistic masterpiece, and an important part of Penn's body of work - and master editor Dede Allen's as well.

Thank you for mentioning Dede Allen. Her work is just as critical to Penn on this brilliant piece of cinema.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing. I'm reading an old book Cosell by Howard Cosell, he was describing this moment at the Munich Olympics, so it was interesting to see.

Bob Seagren would have won easily with his own poles, he was given a pole that was too light ( not strong enough) for his speed and strength. The same for Jan Johnson. Three years later in an exhibition, he vaulted 5.74 meters, almost 15 cm above the listed World Record. I have no doubt, had he not turned professional to do Superstars, he would have been the first man to pole vault 5.80m ( 19'_

You are so right about the pole issue. I was on the Alabama track team in 1972 with Jan Johnson and I remember him after returning from the Olympics seeming to be pretty down because of the pole controversy issue and everything else that happened at Munich. Even still, Jan Johnson won the Bronze metal in the games. Johnson was incredibly fast and also ran on our 110X4 relay team sometimes as anchor. Awesome athlete an nice guy. Seagren and Johnson were both robbed in Munich by the officials.

I don't. Other Olympic documentaries (such as Olympia and Tokyo Olympiad) include pole vault footage, but none quite like this.

Ozerovs movie "Oo Sport..." about Moscow 80 included pretty similar segment, just with different music.

Is this exactly as it appears in the original film or is this some special cut from DVD special edition or something? The reason I ask is that I saw the original years ago and I seem to remember there was voice over and a soundtrack by Henry Mancini. Not to take away from this version which, with it's minimal sound, is stunning.

I have the DVD. Although I haven't checked it recently, I'm pretty sure this is the original. I was also struck by the creative use of sound.

he was not correct to avoid seagren to use his pole, he would surely won, and it is a pity that he left track and field after Muenchen, He could become the greatest pole vaulter of the history
